Major Cultural Events organized during 2013-2014 NCZCC was involved in 122 cultural programmes during the Financial Year 2013-14 (April - 2013 to March – 2014) in the capacity of main organizer and/or sponsor. Given below are some glimpses of the major cultural activities by the NCZCC in Financial Year 2013-14: “Suranjali” - a cultural event as New Talent Search Programme Suranjali is a programme which

is

providing an opportunity and platform to new talents to showcase their skills. Amongst these talents, some have since graduated to bigger stages and are now commanding a price and demand on their own, both in Allahabad and 594

Programme from 10th to 13th July 2013 for the first time by inviting participation of budding artists from all the member states of NCZCC. During this programme on 10th July 2013, 72artists from U.P., Bihar, M.P. and Rajasthan for light music, on 11th July 2013, 33-artists from U.P., M.P.,Uttarakhand and Delhi for folk songs and classical vocal, on 12th July 2013, 12-artists from Bihar and U.P. for folk and classical dances and on 13th July 2013, 26-artists from U.P., M.P.,Uttarakhand and Delhi for instrumental music and poetic recital were invited. Out of 143- participants, 67 artists were declared ‘fit for stage’ by an independent panel of expert Judges.

Balotsav : 15-day Production Oriented Summer Workshops for Children To acquaint children with the cultural heritage of our country, NCZCC organizes Summer Workshops relating to different art forms where the participants are taught about the various aspects and techniques of art forms. A 15-day ‘Balotsav’ - Production Oriented Summer Workshops for Children was organized in two phases. The first phase began from 20th May to 4th June 2013 and the second phase commenced from 25th May to 5th June, 2013 on the campus of NCZCC. ‘Balotsav’ saw enthusiastic participation from children comprising a cross section of the society. The participants were groomed in various art forms during summer workshops organised by NCZCC. The productions of these workshops were staged and displayed for public viewing. The stage performances were also held wherein children showcased their talents honed by training in respective art forms in which they were trained. Megh Utsav In collaboration with the Department of Culture, U.P.on 10th Aug. 2013 an event on classical Music was organized. The eminent artists who graced the stage were Smt Shruti

Sadoliker Katkar, Vice Chancellor Bhatkande Deemed Music University, for classical vocal, Shri Sahitya Kumar Nahar, Professor and Head, Department of Music, Allahabad University,

for instrumental recital and

Rajkumar Tewari for light music. Shri B.L. Joshi, Honorable Governor of U.P. and Chairman of NCZCC kindly consented to be the Chief Guest on this occasion. His presence provided motivation to the eminent artists and the discerning audience alike. The programme saw a hall filled to capacity. ‘Bol Bum’- A chain Programme A 4-day chain programme of folk songs and folk dances from Haryana, Bihar and U.P. was organised to popularize the regional folk culture. This event was organized in Banka and Katoria districts in Bihar. Kajri Utsav ‘Kajri Utsav’ was organized on 18th and 19th August,

in

Mirzapur

district

of

U.P. in which 36 kajri folk singers from U.P were invited to render kajri songs. Kajri is one of the most important and prominent folk singing forms from the state of Uttar Pradesh and the festival saw enthusiastic participation from the artists and audience alike. Varsha Mangal ‘Varsha Mangal’ was organizedfrom 28th to 30th Aug 2013 in collaboration with Delhi Tourism and Transport Corporation, Govt. of India at Delhi Haat and Preetampura Haat in Delhi. This three-day

cultural

programme projected the folk and tribal dance forms like, ‘Baredi’ folk dance and ‘Saila’ tribal dances from M.P, ‘Jhijhia’ folk dance from Bihar, ‘Ghoomer’ and ‘Phag’ folk dances from Haryana and ‘Garba’ and

‘Dandia’ folk dances from Gujarat. Varsha Mangal was also organized at Khandwa in M.P. on 14th Sept. 2013 Maand Utsav ‘Maand Utsav’ was organized on 13th and 14th Sept. 2013 at Town Hall, Bikaner in Rajasthan in order to revive this dying art form by inviting 17 ‘Maand’ singers from Rajasthan. During this event, Murari Sharma and party from Bikaner gave lecture-cumdemonstration on Maand singing. Dhrupad Samaroh Dhrupad Samaroh was organized on 21st Sept. 2013 in Darbhanga, Bihar. Dhrupad Gayan of Betia Gharana, Darbhanga Gharana and Dagar Gharana was represented in this festival. Through this dedicated festival an effort was made to revive the various styles and Gharanas of this most ancient of all the classical vocal traditions in India, which, otherwise, are in danger of gradually getting extinct. A lecture on Dhrupad Gayaki was delivered by Padamshri Gajendra Narayan Singh, Patna, Bihar, who is an authority of national repute and stature on the subject. Aalha Utsav A two day festival on endangered Aalha folk ballad was organized on 28th and 29th Sept. 2013 in

Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh. 30 folk

balladeers were invited from different parts of U.P. to participate in this festival. Arjun Prasad Bind and his party from Bhadohi, Ram Lakhan Tewari and his party from Unnao, Vansh Gopal Yadav from Mahoba, Uma Shankar Sen and Hori Lal

from

Kaushambhi and Shilu Singh and her party from Raibareli , U.P presented various styles of Aalha Gayaki. Swaang Utsav In collaboration with Haryana Kala Parishad, NCZCC organised a four -day ‘Swaang Utsav’ from 26th to 29th Sept. 2013 in Kurukshetra to popularise Swaang Folk theatre of Haryana.

Raagni Utsav A two day ‘Raagni Utsav’ was organised on 24th & 25th October 2013 in Rohtak, Haryana. 28- folk singers from Rohtak, Karnal and Hissar districts of Haryana were invited to render Raagni Gayaki. Lokrang - A Tribal Dance Festival A festival of tribal dances titled ‘Lokrang’ was organized in collaboration with Jawahar Kala Kendra,Jaipur in Rajansthan from 27th to 29th Oct. 2013. Batalu Ram Mathara with his 15 members party from Chhattisgarh for ‘Kaksar’ and ‘Gendi’ , Sanjay and his party from Dhar for ‘Bhagoria’, Suman Paraste from Dindori for ‘Saila Karma’, Mahesh Kumar Patel from Sambhalpur, Orissa for ‘Sambhaluri’ dances were invited to perform in this festival Lok Dharshan - A Chain Programme A chain programme of folk dances and songs was organized from 28th to 30th Oct. 2013 in Katiyar, Araria and Purnia districts of Bihar with the assistance of the Administration of these Districts. In this programme, ‘Phag’, ‘Panihari’ and ‘Ghoomer’ folk dances from Haryana, ‘Badhai’ and ‘Naurata’ folk dances from M.P. ‘Jhijhia’ folk dance from Bihar and ‘Bundeli’ folk songs from M.P. and ‘Sohar’ and ‘Bhojpuri Lokgeet’ from Bihar were featured. Silver Jubilee Celebration of the ZCCs - Concluding function During the year 2012-2013, most of the major cultural events were organized and/or sponsored by the NCZCC as part of the Celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of the setting up of ZCCs. The inaugural function of Silver Jubilee Celebrations was held from 13th to 16th April 2012 at Panchkula in Haryana. The concluding function of Silver Jubilee Celebrations was organized from 10th to 16 Nov. 2013 in Nagpur. Sheesh Pal Chauhan & Party for ‘Ghoomer’ Dance of Haryana, Sanjay Sharma & Party for ‘Mayur Nritya’ of Mathura , Puran Singh Vohra & Party for ‘Chholiya’ Dance and Sudhir Tewari & Party for ‘Badhai’ Dance were sponsored by the NCZCC in the closing function. 21

Craftspersons from U.P.,

Uttarakhand, Bihar and Rajasthan exhibited and sold their respective wares in the function. The closing saw a turnout of public which was hitherto unprecedented in the city of Nagpur.

Rashtriya Shilp Mela -2013, A 10-day National Fair of Crafts & Performing Arts (Folk/Tribal/Classical/Semi Classical & Light Music and Dance) Rashtriya Shilp Mela -2013, A 10-day National Craft -Fair In

to

promote and preserve the

traditional arts,

crafts and heritage

country, a ‘Rashtriya Shilp

Mela’

is

organized annually by the NCZCC. In the Mela, a myriad of handicraft items from all over India are showcased and sold directly by the craftspersons to the public visiting the Mela. Along with arts and crafts, traditional cuisine from different regions of the country is on display and sale which is a huge attraction for local public and tourists alike. This year Shilp Mela is organized from 20th to 29th Dec.2013 for 10 days in Allahabad-Haat on the campus of NCZCC. The cultural programmes were held regularly in the evening session and the handicraft items were displayed from 11-00 A.M. to 9.00 P.M. every day.. Approximately, 600 folk artists from across the country and other were invited to present various

styles

of

music

and

dance

(folk/tribal/classical/semi classical & light) their regions. Over 145- Artisans and their assistants from all over country were invited to showcase handicrafts and ethnic cuisine from various regions. Major Achievement of Rashtriya Shilp Mela 2013 Rashtriya Shilp Mela 2013 was organized in Shilp Haat, NCZCC Campus, Allahabad from 20th to 29th December, 2013 and further extended later on by one day on popular demand to 30.12.2013. 141 Stalls were occupied in the Mela which is highest ever for any single Shilp Mela. 53 different crafts and 30 different kind of cuisine were put on display covering 16 states of India which is also the highest ever for any single Shilp Mela. More than 500 folk & tribal artists presented folk & tribal dances and songs on stage during this period which is also the highest ever participation of folk artists in any single Shilp Mela. Total 67,059 tickets were sold generating Rs. 6,70,590/- in earning ( at the rate of Rs. 10/- per

ticket). This was also the highest ever window sale for any single Shilp Mela and a record for the NCZCC. For the first time NCZCC took the Shilp Mela to the social media platform and the Face book page of NCZCC created for this purpose received more than 6000 likes in 10 days which is the first ever and the best ever for the NCZCC. The total sale of all the stalls combined (Artifacts and cuisine) was Rs.17174850 (Rupees One Crore Seventy one lakh seventy four thousand eight hundred fifty only) while the total sale in the year 2012-13 Shilp Mela was Rs. 39,88,781 (Rupees Thirty nine lakh eighty eight thousand seven hundred eighty one). Thus, in the year 2013 there was an increase of 331% in the sale of artifacts and cuisine as compared year 2012 which is also the best ever increase in the sale. Gonda Mahotsav: This programme was organized in joint collaboration with Ministry of Culture, GOI and Ministry of Iron & Steel, GOI, Delhi from 4th to 7th January, 2014 in Gonda where in 86 folk artists from U.P., 60 artists from M.P., 20 artists from Haryana, 30 artists from Uttarakhand., 32 artists from Punjab, 30 each from Chhattisgarh & Jharkhand and 15 folk artists from Rajasthan were provided by NCZCC to showcase their regional art forms.

An Appreciation letter for this festival was received from Honourable Union Minister of Steel, Government of India.

Dharati Dhoranree Chain Programme: This Chain programme was organized from 18th to 26th January, 2014 in rural and remote areas of Bikaner, Napasar, Dungargarh, Churoo, Nokha, Shree Ganganagar and Hanumangarh in Rajasthan. In this chain programme, Manik Chandra & his party from Sonebhadra, U.P. presented ‘Karma’ dance, Arvind Yadav & his Party from Sagar, M.P. presented ‘Badhai’ dance, Nand Lal Bharti & Party from Uttarakhand presented ‘Harul’ & ‘Tandi’ folk dances, Rakesh Ganguli & Party from Rohtak, Haryana presented ‘Ghoomer’ folk dance, Amrendra Singh & Party from Patiala, Punjab presented ‘Jindua’ & ‘Bhangada’ dances .. Chalo Man Ganga Yamuna Teer-2014: The NCZCC organised its annual, prestigious "Chalo Man Ganga Yamuna Teer" programme from 27th January to 5th February, 2014 during the Magh Mela 2014. In this prestigious programme, the Centre invited folk and tribal dance groups from different parts of the country covering 22 states. A "Rashtriya Kavi Sammelan" was also organized. Approximately three lakh pilgrims from all parts of India witnessed this confluence of Indian culture on the stage of the NCZCC. Appreciation letters were received from the following. 1.

Lok Dhara-2014 This Chain Programme of folk and tribal dances was organized from 23rd to 27th February, 2014 in Mirzapur, Chopan, Rabersganj, Mugalsarai in U.P.with the assistance of local administration. In this event ‘Chari’, ‘Ghoomer’ & ‘Chakari’ dances from Rajasthan, ‘Mayur Nritya’ & ‘Barsane Ki Holi’ from U.P., ‘Badhai’, ‘Naurata’ & ‘Dhimariyee’ dances from M.P, ‘Lai Haroaba’, ‘Dhol Cholam’ & ‘Thang-ta’ dances from Manipur were performed by folk & tribal artists of these regions. Maati Ke Rang: Maati Ke Rang- a Chain Programme of folk & tribal dances were organized from 25th Feb, to 3rd March, 2014 in Rohtak, Rewari, Sonipat, Jind, Karnal, Kurukshetra in Haryana in collaboration with Multi Art Cultural Centre, Kurukshetra. In this programme, 13 tribal artists from M.P. for ‘Saila’ tribal dance, 15 tribal artists from West Bangal for ‘Purulia Chhau’ dance,13 tribal dances from Chhattisgarh for ‘Panthi Nritya’, 13 folk artists from Punjab for ‘Giddha’ dance & 10 tribal artists from Rajasthan for ‘Terahtali’ dance were invited perform. Approximately, 3000 audience witnessed this event every day. Maa Tujhe Salaam: ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ was dedicated to celebrate International Women’s Day from Ist to 4th March, 2014 wherein four theatre groups from Allahabad & Kaushambhi in U.P staged ‘Nautanki’ and ‘Nukkad Natak’ in 14 villages of Allahabad and Kaushambi districts, each creating awareness regarding women and child health care . The event was concluded on 7th March, 2014 at

IGNCA in collaboration with Global Health Advocates in Delhi. The

NCZCC organized the entire event as the Nodal Organization. Cultural Evening in Raj Bhawan, Lucknow: An evening devoted to folk dances from U.P.(Phoolon Ki Holi), Assam (Bihu dance) & Haryana (Bum Lahri & Phag dances) and instrumental music (Flute) was organized in Raj Bhavan, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on the eve of the Holi Festival on 15th March, 2014. Monthly Theatre Festival under Theatre Rejuvenation Scheme . In order to preserve and propagate rare and vanishing art forms of folk, tribal and traditional theatre traditions of our country, Department of Culture, Govt. of India decided to provide funding to the ZCCs under ‘Theatre Rejuvenation Scheme’ . To implement this scheme effectively, the NCZCC restarted its long stalled ‘Maasik Natya Yojana’ after a gap

of nearly 4 years. In this scheme one Play will be staged on the stage of the NCZCC every month. Under this scheme, a comedy play “Lahaul vila Koovat” was staged on 26th March, 2014 in the Auditorium of NCZCC, Allahabad. It is an Indian adaptation of a play by the famous French Writer Maulier. It was directed by Munni Devi of Lucknow and was produced by the NGO “Anaadi Sanskritik Evam Samajik Sansthan” of Lucknow, U.P. One such presentation on every second Sunday of the Month will be organized. This initiative has received a very warm welcome from the public. Special Cultural Programme - “Festival of India” in Peru and Cuba A “Festival of India” in Peru and Cuba was organized by the Ministry of Culture, GOI, New Delhi from 24th Oct. to 5th Nov. 2013. The NCZCC, Allahabad was designated as the Nodal Agency and the Director , NCZCC was designated as the Nodal Officer to organize this largest and most comprehensive Indian Culture Festival in Peru and Cuba. The rich, diverse and long cultural heritage of India was presented to the public in these countries in the form of 6 components, namely performing arts (classical dances), visual arts, literary workshop, Mehandi (Henna) application on palms, food festival, and film festival both at the cinema and on two Cuban television channels. At the inauguration of the Film Festival, Director, NCZCC addressed Cuban audience welcoming Indian Culture in Cuba. The appreciation of the larger Public has been recorded in the radio, newspaper and local TV stations. In Cuba, the performances were not only presented in Havana, but were also taken to the Province of Pinar del Rio, western most province of Cuba, on the 31st, where it was welcomed with huge elation and was widely appreciated. Reviews in local newspapers highlighted the presence of children in the audience who were absorbed by the charming combination of colorfulness, music and dancers' skilled performance. Summarizing, this was not only the largest Cultural Festival of India in the region, but also the most comprehensive one, thus reaching a wider sector of the population. This has indeed greatly contributed to mutual understanding and strengthening of friendship and cooperation bonds between India and Peru & Cuba. A Personal Appreciation letter was given by Honourable Ambassador of India in Cuba, Sri C.Rajasekhar, IFS to Director NCZCC for his outstanding contribution in making the Festival a Success.
