Ventilation for Container Housing or Office unit Carbon dioxide levels above 1000 ppm are not suggested. When occupation of these containers is overdone without proper ventilation the occupants will be at greater risk for degraded health. Because of this, ventilation needs to be a permanent installation if the doors and windows can shut tight.

Vent holes of some sort need to be low in the container to allow the venting of Carbon Dioxide (not Carbon Monoxide) Directly above the vent holes need to be water deflection shields to prevent water penetration

For cooling and cross ventilation purposes some vents higher in the container are needed if the containers doors and windows are shut. About a 72 Square inch hole for ventilation is needed for each 20 feet of container. Carbon Dioxide tests need to be done on site to certify just how many occupants can safely stay inside when the doors and windows are shut tight. For this purpose a portable Carbon Dioxide

meter is required to conduct on-site tests prior to use.

LEXAN DAYTIME SKYLIGHTS w/INTERIOR PRISMATIC DIFFUSER Approx 8 x 8 square inches or less of Skylight is needed to illuminate a more than 10- 15 foot section of the container at a time for lighting comparable to a typical American kitchen. A diffuser must be used or else direct sunlight will be concentrated on one spot inside of the container. The lowest cost skylight is a piece of flat high impact plastic.

Color Issues & Sun Light For Container Housing

Any color other than white (or mirror silver) will actually absorb more sunlight as heat and in addition the sun will degrade the coating faster as a result. The containers in Haiti need to be painted entirely white especially if they lack AC. Windows ideally would have a coating of 3M™ UV Block Window Film for an improvement of about 64% in cooling savings.

Grounding issues

If the container is to be fitted with live electricity the container metal body must be grounded into the ground with a grounding rod. The ground is there as a failsafe in the event that the wiring shorts to the container metal and in the rain the occupant steps from the container onto the ground. If the container is to be fitted with solar battery light systems the grounding rod is not needed
