In this elegant 18th-century town house with its picturesque garden the work of the versatile British artist Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) is on display on the top floor. Brangwyn’s talent as an architect, painter and designer of glassware, furniture and jewellery is breathtaking. The ground floor is the setting for temporary plastic art exhibitions.

Bruges’ most important tower stands 83 metres tall and houses a treasury, an impressive clock mechanism and a carillon with 47 silver-toned bells. BRUGGEMUSEUMCITY HALL 38 Bruges’ City Hall (1376) is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. It is from here that the city has been governed for more than 600 years. An absolute masterpiece is the Gothic Hall with its late 19th-century murals and polychrome vaulted ceiling. The adjoining historic hall evokes the city council’s history with a number of authentic documents and works of art. This mansion, erected between 1722 and 1727, was the place from where Bruges’ rural surroundings were governed. The building functioned as a court of justice between 1795 and 1984. Today the city archives, which safeguard Bruges’ written memory, are stored here. Windmills have graced Bruges’ ramparts ever since the construction of the outer city wall at the end of the 13th century. Today four of them are left on Kruisvest. BRUGGEMUSEUM-WELCOME CHURCH OF OUR LADY 14 The 122 metres high brick tower of the Welcome Church of Our Lady is a perfect illustration of the craftsmanship of Bruges’ artisans. The church displays a valuable art collection: Michelangelo’s world-famous Madonna and Child, countless paintings, 13th-century painted sepulchres and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. This didactical museum sketches the history of the potato, Belgian fries and the various sauces and dressings that accompany this most delicious and most famous of Belgian comestibles. The museum is housed in Saaihalle, one of Bruges’ most attractive buildings.

MEMLING IN SINT-JAN HOSPITAALMUSEUM 25 Saint John’s Hospital has an eight hundred- year-old history of caring for pilgrims, travellers and the sick. OUR LADY OF THE POTTERY HOSPITAALMUSEUM 37 This hospital dates back to the 13th century, when nuns took on the care of pilgrims, travellers and the sick. Over the centuries, the hospital developed into a modern home for the elderly. BREWERY DE HALVE MAAN

De Halve Maan (1546) is the city’s last working brewery. Their house brew is Brugse Zot, a spirited top-fermented beer made from malt, hop and special yeast. This delicious refreshing beer can be tasted on the premises. Daily guided tours are available in several languages.

SAINT SAVIOUR’S CATHEDRAL 20 Bruges’ oldest parish church (12th-15th century) has amongst its treasures a rood loft with organ, medieval tombs, Brussels tapestries and a rich collection of Flemish paintings (14th-18th century). Bladelin Court

At around 1440, Pieter Bladelin, treasurer of the Order of the Golden Fleece, commissioned the construction of Bladelin Court. In the 15th century the powerful Florentine banking family of De Medici set up a branch here. The stone medallion portraits of Lorenzo de Medici and his wife still grace the picturesque inner court.

The Lace Centre is housed in the 15th century complex which consisted, among other things, of almshouses funded by the Adornes family, who also built the Jerusalem Chapel. Chapel of our Lady of the Blind

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Blind is supposed to have been erected in timber in 1305 through the agency of Robert of Bethune, Count of Flanders. The count had the chapel built after the Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle (1304) in gratitude for the Virgin Mary. The present chapel dates from 1651. The miraculous oaken image of Our Lady of the Blind is a Madonna and Child from 1415. Each year, on August 15, the procession of Our Lady of the Blind winds its way through the streets of Bruges. In order to abide by the Solemn Oath, sworn during the battle of Mons-en-Pévèle, the citizens of Bruges have been devoting a so-called solemn oath-candle in the church of Our Lady of the Pottery since 1304. For centuries, this popular municipal procession has depicted arresting and moving scenes from the Old and New Testament. The procession’s roots go back to 1291! The Procession of the Holy Blood has been on UNESCO’s Intangible World Heritage list since 2009, so you just have to see it!

The Pageant of the Golden Tree, organised every 5 years, was first introduced in 1958. The “Tournament of the Golden Tree” was a joust held on the Market Square in 1468 on the occasion of the marriage between Charles the Bold and Margaret of York. Apart from the century-old legend of the Golden Tree, the history of Flanders and the Joyous Entry of the bride and groom are also displayed. The Pageant of the Golden Tree is an enchanting show featuring giants, floats and 2,000 colourfully dressed extras.

General terms & conditions for group reservations 2012 Day trip reservations Procedure

Payment

Changes

Day trips must be booked in writing (fax, e-mail) at least 3 weeks beforehand. Toerisme Brugge will make reservations for groups of at least 20 paying people. If the number of participants is less than 20, the price charged will be the price for 20 participants. Toerisme Brugge will book the requested services and send the customer and service provider(s) a quotation. Menu prices exclude drinks. Reservation is only confirmed upon payment of an advance of 30% by the customer to Toerisme Brugge. The customer is also charged an additional mediation charge of € 5 (not refundable). Advance payments can be made by bank transfer or credit card. Transfers must be made to bank account number BE11 0910 1303 8748 on behalf of ‘Toerisme Brugge, Postbus 744, B-8000 Brugge’. Credit card payments are made by stating the card number, expiry date and CVC number (always state the reservation number, the group name and the date of the visit). All bank charges are at the expense of the customer. Cheques and vouchers are not accepted. The balance must be paid in cash on the spot to the various suppliers on the day itself. Upon receiving the advance, Toerisme Brugge will send the customer a contract with the reservation details. If the advance has not been paid before the date stated in the quotation, Toerisme Brugge cannot guarantee your reservation. The number of participants can be changed up to five working days before the planned visit (max. 10% less). If there has been no change to the specified number, the customer will always have to pay for the originally specified number of participants (with a minimum of 20). Only two changes (submitted in writing) can be accepted.

Cancellation Cancellations must be made (in writing) to Toerisme Brugge at least seven

working days before the visit. Toerisme Brugge always charges a cancellation fee of € 15 if the entire reservation is cancelled. For cancellations less than seven working days before the visit, half of the total amount of the reservation will be charged. For cancellations less than 48 hours before the visit, Toerisme Brugge will charge the full amount of the reservation.

Guided tour reservations Procedure

There is a maximum of 25 participants per guide. There is no minimum. Guided tours must be booked in writing at least 1 week beforehand.

Payment

The guide is to be paid in cash on the spot, they will give you a receipt. Toerisme Brugge also charges an administration fee of € 5 in case of advance payment of the guided tour.

Changes/

The guided tour can be changed or cancelled (in writing) up to three working

Cancellation days before the visit. If the guided tour is cancelled less than three working

days before the visit, you must pay € 60 per guide (+ administration costs). Should the group fail to arrive, or arrive more than one hour after the agreed departure time at the meeting point, the total amount of € 60 (+administration fee) will be charged.

Important information appointments For guided tours of a longer duration (entire day or outside Bruges) it is

customary to invite the guide to a meal at the expense of the group. The total duration of the service is then reduced by one hour (= € 30). If the guided tour takes place outside the old town centre of Bruges, travel costs will be charged for each guide (= € 5). The amount paid per guide is solely for the services of the guide. If you have planned a guided tour of a museum, you still have to pay for the tickets at the museum. Please always be at the agreed meeting place on time. The name of the guide is not known beforehand. Liability

Toerisme Brugge is only an intermediary and cannot be held responsible for any failings on the part of the customer and/or service provider, nor for any accidents or other circumstances beyond its control.

Coach park

A parking fee is charged for the Bargeweg coach park between the Railway Station and Katelijnepoort: - Up to a maximum of 4 hours: € 13 - Up to a maximum of 11 hours: € 20 - More than 11 hours and per day of 24 hours: € 25 There are sanitary facilities at the Bargeplein where the group can alight and meet the guide.
