SERVICE RECOGNITION

All employees are entitled to receive recognition for continuous service with the Board. In conjunction with this, employees who have served a minimum of fifteen years are entitled to be recognized for their service, beginning with their fifteenth anniversary. Following the employee’s fifteenth anniversary, subsequent awards are made at 25, at 35 years of service. In addition, employees are able to apply for reinstatement of prior service. This occurs when an employee has voluntarily decided to leave the employ of the Board but does so on good terms. The following Policies describe the manner in which prior service can be recaptured.

Long Service Award Program Prior Service Recognition Eligible Employees:

All continuous employees of Edmonton Catholic Schools (OOS, ATA, ECSSA, and AUSE) who have been rehired and actively employed for a period equal to or greater than the most recent break in service.

Purpose:

To recognize accumulated employment service with Edmonton Catholic Schools exclusively for the purpose of service recognition.

Definition of Service:

An exclusive continuous employment relationship between an individual and Edmonton Catholic Schools where the individual receives wages in exchange for service of an assigned position, which has a specified consecutive term.

Accumulated Service:

Includes all employment terms that are greater than 3 months; and that are considered temporary, probationary or continuous in nature. Substitute and casual employment terms are not included within this definition, as they are not considered to be a continuous or exclusive employment relationship.

Break in Service:

Service accumulation is considered interrupted when: termination has occurred, leaves greater than 1 full calendar year (paid or unpaid) or when an employment status changes to substitute or casual.

Secondment:

Periods of secondment are included (provided that the incumbent remains on the Edmonton Catholic Schools payroll) as this is still considered to be an exclusive continuous employment relationship.

Process:

Recognized service is calculated by adding the total breaks in service (including periods of substitute, casual employment, and leaves greater than one year) to the original eligible date of hire. The new date is considered to be the employee’s service program recognition date.

Employees must request service recognition by completing an application form (See end of this document). If an employee is approved for service recognition adjustment and it is determined that they are eligible to receive a service award, they will be recognized at the next service recognition celebration. Only the highest level of service recognition will be celebrated. Example: Employee A First probationary of hire: September 1, 1972 Maternity: June 30, 1976 – October 1, 1976 Terminated: June 30, 1978 Break in Service 4 years and 2 months Rehire substitute: September 1, 1981 Temporary Contract: September 1, 1982 Temporary Contract Ended: February 1, 1983 Probationary Contract: February 2, 1983 Secondment: September 1, 1989 – June 30, 1991 Resigned: September 1, 1991 Break in service 4 years Rehired Probationary Contract: September 1, 1995 September 1, 1972 + 8 yr. 2 mths. Service Recognition date: November 1, 1980 Total service (as of September 1, 2001): 20yr. 10 mths. Eligible for 15 year award next celebration
