Awards Distinguished Service Award The Executive Committee may select a Fellow to receive the Association’s Distinguished Service Award. The individual will have provided exceptional support above and beyond that ordinarily expected in a focused area of IAOMS endeavors and/or initiatives. 1999 Andrew Linz − USA Honored for his service on the Executive Committee from 1977-1980. He was instrumental in developing a draft of the constitution and bylaws of the IAOMS Foundation. 2001 Marsden Bell − New Zealand Honored for his service as Vice Chairman of the inaugural Board of Trustees of the Foundation, subsequently serving as the Chairman during 2001. 2003 John Frame − United Kingdom Recognized for his service as the IAOMS Newsletter Editor from 1989 to 1999. 2007 Piet Haers − United Kingdom Recognized for his dedication and achievement in improving the scientific caliber of the International Journal of Oral

and Maxillofacial Surgery, the official scientific publication of the IAOMS. 2009 Donald F. Booth – USA Honored for his Board service in several important roles. He joined the Executive Committee in 2001 and served as Treasurer from 2003- 2009. Under his leadership as treasurer, a sound financial basis for the association’s activities was established. He also received a Presidential Citation in 2009. 2011 Nabil Samman – Hong Kong Recognized for his service to the IAOMS in his role of organizing and overseeing the Fellowship programs in cleft/craniofacial and oncology reconstruction during their first two years. Professor Samman also helped secure funding for the Fellowship positions from corporate sponsors through the IAOMS Foundation. He also served as President-Elect, President and Past-President.

2013 John Cawood - United Kingdom 2015 John Curtin - Australia Recognized for his service to the IAOMS and IAOMS Foundation in his instrumental role in planning the first IAOMS Foundation fundraising activities during ICOMS 2015 in Melbourne. Dr. Curtin has shown great creativity, networking skills and determination to develop and implement a most attractive and profitable program for the Foundation. His achievement is an inspiration for all of us and has set the highest standards for the Foundation fundraising activities to become a new and strong tradition at all future ICOMS. 2015 Larry Nissen - USA Recognized for his service to the IAOMS for his dedication and committment to the IAOMS and the IAOMS Foundation. Following his IAOMS Presidency, Dr. Nissen served as the Foundation Chairman for a period of four years. Under his leadership, the Foundation has seen an unprecedented growth. Dr. Nissen has also given great service to IAOMS as chair of the Governance Committee, strengthening the Association's rules of governance and accountability.

Outstanding Committee Member Award This award recognizes an IAOMS member for outstanding committee service. 2001 Patrick Magennis − United Kingdom Recognized for his involvement in the development of a membership database 2005 Nabil Samman − Hong Kong Honored for his work on and dedication to the Education Committee. 2009 Julio Acero − Spain Recognized for his outstanding performance as Chair of the Education Committee during the period 2005 to 2011. 2011 Donald F. Booth − USA Recognized for his excellent performance as Chair of the Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) Committee.

2013 Joseph Piecuch - USA 2015 Gabriele Millesi - Austria Recognized for her outstanding and consistent dedication to serving on IAOMS committees for nearly two decades, first in the Local Organizing Committee of the Vienna ICOMS, and then for six years as Member at Large of the Executive Committee. During this time Dr. Millesi has also greatly contributed in several ad hoc committees such as the Workforce Report, the Governance Committee and the ICOMS Guidelines Review.

Honorary and Distinguished Fellows The Executive Committee of the IAOMS may recommend election selected persons − oral and maxillofacial surgeons or others − who have rendered distinguished service to the specialty internationally to Honorary Fellowship of the Association. In 1997, the Executive Committee recommended that the designation of “Honorary Fellow” be changed to “Distinguished Fellow” for all subsequent recipients of this honor, who may or may not be oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Honorary/Distinguished Fellows shall automatically be considered Life Members of the Association

Honorary Fellows 1968 Fred A. Henny − USA Fred Henny served as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee in the United States for that first historic conference in 1962. He served on the initial Executive Committee as its Chairman from 1962-1965 and then was President from 1965-1968. 1971 His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard – The Netherlands Prince Bernhard welcomed delegates to the 4th ICOS in 1971 and accepted Honorary Fellowship in the IAOS. 1974 Terence G. Ward − United Kingdom Terence Ward was appointed to the first Executive Committee in 1964, served as Secretary-General from 1962-1968 and President from 1968-1971. He continued to serve on the Executive Committee as Past-President from 19741977.

1974 His Majesty King Juan Carlos − Spain Prince Juan Carlos accepted Honorary Fellowship in the IAOMS in 1974 for his role in welcoming delegates to the 5th ICOS in Madrid. 1980 Patrick J. Hillary − President of the Republic of Ireland Patrick J. Hillary was elected an Honorary Fellow in 1980 for his role in opening the 6th ICOS in Dublin. 1980 Jørgen Rud − Denmark Jørgen Rud was chairman of the 2nd ICOS Organizing Committee. In 1971, he took over as President, serving in that role until 1974 when he took on a six-year term as Secretary-General. 1986 Bill van der Kwast – The Netherlands Bill van der Kwast was Chairman of the 4th ICOS in Amsterdam and served on the IAOMS Executive Committee from 1971-1983, including holding the offices of President from 1977 to 1980 and Secretary-General from 1980 to1983. 1986 Norman L. Rowe − United Kingdom During the years when Terence Ward was President of IAOMS, Norman L. Rowe fulfilled the role of SecretaryGeneral (1968-1971). He also served on the Executive Committee from 1971 to 1977. He also received his award because of his professional stature. 1986 Gerald H. Leatherman − United Kingdom Gerald Leatherman was the Honorary Secretary General of the Federation Dentaire Internationale. He organized a dinner in London between Fred Henny and Lyall Bishop and leading British oral surgeons. He was a member of the first Organizing Committee. 1992 David E. Poswillo − United Kingdom David E. Poswillo began his long service with the IAOMS as a member of the Executive Committee from 1980-1983. He served as Secretary-General from 1983-1989. 1992 Bernard Degen − USA Bernie Degen was instrumental in developing international unity within the profession through education, organization and mutual understanding.

1995 Daniel M. Laskin − USA Daniel Laskin served on the Executive Committee from 1980 to 1983, as President from 1983-1986, Past President from 1986-1989 and then executive director from 1992-1999. 1997 Robert V. Walker − USA Bob Walker began serving on the IAOMS Executive Committee in 1986 and was elected President for the 1989-1992 term. He also was recognized as a pillar of the profession. The 20th ICOMS in Santiago was dedicated in his honor. 2015 Karl Leibinger - Germany Karl Leibinger revolutionized osteosynthesis and has engaged the surgical community in a meaningful partnership with the industry. Mr. Leibinger has also been a tremendous supporter of the IAOMS Foundation, which will enable the IAOMS Foundation to support a Fellowship in perpetuity.

Distinguished Fellows 1999 Robert M. Cook − Australia Robert Cook was a member of the Executive Committee from 1986 to 1992 when he took over as President, serving until 1995. He then went on to serve as inaugural Chairman of the newly formed IAOMS Foundation, holding that position from 1995 through 2001. 2001 Rudolph Fries − Austria Rudi Fries was Vice President from 1992-1995, President from 1995-1997. Past President from 1997-1999. He was particularly recognized for his tireless efforts in involving the eastern European countries and less developed nations in Asia and Africa. The 17th ICOMS in Vienna was dedicated in his honor. 2005 Wilfred Schilli − Germany Wilfred Schilli served as Chairman of the organizing committee of the 8th ICOMS in Berlin; Vice President of the IAOMS from 1983 to 1986; President from 1986 to 1989 and Past- President from 1989 to 1992. He was particularly recognized for his unstinting attempts at unifying maxillofacial surgery education and training worldwide.

2007 Paul J.W. Stoelinga – The Netherlands Paul Stoelinga has had a long, distinguished career as a leader within the profession. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 1988-2000; President-Elect from 1999 to 2001; President from 2001 to 2003; Past President from 2003 to 2005 during which he also became Chairman of the Foundation from 2003 to 2007.

2007 György Szabó − Hungary György Szabó was chair of the organizing committee of the 12th ICOMS in Budapest. He also was a close link between the east European countries and IAOMS during the difficult Soviet period. 2009 Wei-liu Qiu − Peoples Republic of China Wei-liu Qiu was the chairman of the organizing committee of the 19th ICOMS in Shanghai. He is also recognized as the promoter of Chinese involvement in the international association. 2011 John Helfrick – USA John Helfrick was recognized for his distinguished service to the specialty internationally. Throughout his career he was in the forefront of IAOMS leadership serving as President-Elect from 1997 to 1999 and as President from 1999 to 2001. In 2003 he assumed the position of IAOMS Executive Director, serving in that post until 2011. 2013 Carlos Navarro Vila - Spain 2013 Kurt-Wilhelm Butow - South Africa 2015 Kishore Nayak – India Dr. Nayak was recognized for his distinguished contribution to wisely guiding the Association through turbulent times. The Association greatly benefited from his leadership, courage, perseverance, unrelentless devotion, and focused vision. 2015 Larry NIssen – USA Following his successful presidency, Dr. Nissen has served as the Foundation Chairman for a period of four years. Under hisleadership, the Foundation experienced unprecedented growth in the amount of funding raised. Dr. Nissen also has given tremendously valuable service to the IAOMS as chair of the Governance Committee, strengthening our rules of governance and accountability.

Presidential Lecturers at ICOMS The IAOMS President selects a distinguished expert in the field to deliver the Presidential Lecture at each International Conference of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ICOMS).

Presidential Citation The President may recognize a Fellow of the Association who has made exceptional contributions to the IAOMS and/or the specialty. 2005 Gabriele Millesi – Austria Recognized for her outstanding contributions to the 17th ICOMS and her service as 2006-2008 Special Task Force Chair. 2009 Donald F. Booth − USA Provided service above and beyond that ordinarily expected of a Fellow as Treasurer of IAOMS. 2013 Larry Nissen – USA 2015 Mark Wong – USA Recognized for his diligent work at establishing the International Board for the Certification of Specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IBCSOMS). 2015 Takashi Fujibayashi – Japan Recognized for his outstanding service as Reviewer for the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IJOMS), and for over a decade as the Section Chairman of the Oral Medicine Section that has grown tremendously.
