WELCOME
FROM THE PRESIDENT OF FERMA
4th – 7th OCTOBER 2015 VENICE, ITALY Welcome from the President of FERMA Welcome to the FERMA Risk Management Forum 2015 and to the beautiful and historic city of Venice. I believe this will be one of the most remarkable events that FERMA has held in its more than 40 years, based on our three themes: profession, innovation and diversity. Our theme of profession. We will formally launch European Certification of Risk Management Professionals, a goal which is dear to the hearts of many risk managers. With a great deal of hard work and support from our members, we have reached this point in just two years since we announced the project. Our theme of innovation. We use the Forum brings together risk professionals from all over Europe to discuss the issues and solutions to living and working in a riskier world. In just three days, you can explore and discuss best practice in risk and insurance management with colleagues and influential service providers and learn about the latest developments. Our theme of diversity. We are in the process of achieving another of our goals: diversity. Women are now well represented, not just among the participants at the Forum, but as speakers and moderators. We have more to achieve for the risk management community in Europe to reflect the incredible variety of the people that we serve. We are continuing our work, but we have made impressive steps. The Forum is the most important event for risk managers in Europe and a wonderful opportunity for us all to learn, contribute, discuss and share our enthusiasm for risk management. I believe that we will return from Venice with new ideas, knowledge and contacts that will strengthen us in your work and in our profession.
We hope you enjoy the Forum!
Julia Graham President of FERMA
Florence Bindelle Executive Director

WELCOME WORD FROM ANRA Welcome from Alessandro De Felice ANRA, the Italian risk management association, and I as its president welcome you, our friends and colleagues, to Venice and the FERMA Forum 2015. Bringing the FERMA Forum to Italy is an occasion to strengthen the links between the Italian risk management community and our colleagues from across Europe. It will help us reinforce the position of risk management in the corporate governance of companies in Italy, and spread interest in the culture of risk management among the many small and medium sized companies that make up much of the Italian economy. Finally, the Forum will highlight that, ANRA and the other national associations have a strong voice in Europe for risk management and risk managers thanks to their membership of FERMA. Risk is essential for us to prosper. While we look with delight at the wonderful buildings and art around us, we should not forget that Venice has its foundations in commerce by people who took risks to trade across the seas.
Alessandro De Felice President of ANRA

A world
of opportunities
This year two pilots embarked on an unprecedented mission: to fly around the globe using solar power alone. Next year, their mission continues. It’s easy to envisage the multitude of technological, mechanical and weather risks this involves. Yet when others regarded such an endeavour as uninsurable, we’ve been on board the Solar Impulse program since 2012. Why? Because we share a belief in the richness of knowledge and potential for innovation that flourishes when expertise is combined across industries. With our wealth of experience in aviation, engineering, construction and renewable energy, we have worked alongside the Solar Impulse team to assess, manage and mitigate the risk – so what was once just a pioneering dream can become reality. We’re smarter together. solarimpulse.swissre.com

FERMA TV BROUGHT TO YOU BY BRANDFORMULA The leading players in European risk management will be attending Venice for the FERMA Forum 2015, but not everyone will have the chance to come and join the Forum. FERMA wishes to influence a much wider audience and encourage more people to understand the importance of its role and the work of its members – both individually and as country bodies. With a combination of ‘studio’ and ‘roving’ interviews, FERMA TV will bring both in-depth and ‘sound bite’ content directly to the delegates.
FERMA CONVERSATION CORNER BROUGHT TO YOU BY WILLIS Take the opportunity to tell us what you think about the Forum by stopping by the conversation corner booth sponsored by Willis Gras Savoye and record a short video.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND TRUST IN THE RISK AND INSURANCE PROFESSIONAL “Risk management should be a feature of all businesses. Companies take risks to generate returns. The board is responsible for ensuring that all business risks are identified, evaluated, and suitably managed. In a world of increasing complexity and uncertainty, directors must manage risk more assiduously than ever before. The execution of the riskmanagement system should be entrusted to the management, which is in charge of daily risk management.” Extract from a guide to Corporate Governance Practices in the European Union – EcoDa 2015

During the session we will talk about how SMEs and large corporation can find a common risk language to better understanding each other. The second part will focus on how to cooperate and assist your SMEs suppliers in a real partnership instead of the «swallow or die Scenario» that is often used by purchasing departments of large corporations. Often liabilities and insurance issues are amongst others not managed to the benefit of an equitable partnership. 4. INTERNATIONAL INSURANCE PROGRAMMES SALA PERLA

The soft market is the «new normal», we are in a period of industry consolidation and in the times of the Technology Revolution. Innovation can be sustainable, slow moving or disruptive, typically game changing. The panel will consider how the insurance industry

These perspectives include different organizational levels as well as different functions (e.g. HR, Accounting, Treasury, CFO) within the organization.
Prof Roberto Poli, Sociology and Social Research, University of Trento From our highly interconnected and complex world, new uncertainties are continually emerging. Mostly they are intangible. Organisations need a framework which allows them to manage risks that they do not yet know about and take advantage of opportunities that are also new.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGES OF A DIVERSE WORLD “2015 is a milestone year for our common future. Last March, governments adopted the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which will be followed by Sustainable Development Goals through to 2030, and a new universal agreement on climate changes.” According to Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) “Sustainable development requires recognizing the interdependencies of economic, social and environmental changes.” “Therefore, disaster resilience, poverty eradication, social equity and environmental sustainability must all be part of a unified agenda. With these major initiatives, insurers are showing long-terms vision and an agenda of solutions.” The platform will allow insurers to commit to concrete actions on risk management, insurance products, investments, partnerships and disclosure frameworks that support disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and mitigation, financial inclusion, green investment and accountability and transparency. Extract from United Nation Report June 2015 Equality is about ‘creating a fairer society where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. It’s good that we are different «Vive la difference»! By eliminating prejudice and discrimination we can achieve an industry that is fair and diverse and plays a role in creating a society that is healthier and happier.
