32014 shifting mass ! Dutch/Eng www.inekeheerkens.nl 2014 Introduction text for the Rijswijk Textile Biennial catalogue ! Skin on the milk - The visual memory of touch ʻInitially it is a slippery, shiny layer on hot milk. When fished out of the cup, dangling from the spoon, it proves to be a surprisingly tenacious substance. Draped over the edge of the saucer it forms interesting folds and wrinkles. Any contact with lip or tongue is for many people abhorrent. Just reading about skin on milk can bring on the impulse to retch. This reaction can often be linked to memories from childhood. What artist would not want to effect such an intense reaction preferably with positive connotations of course – with his/her work? This violent reaction to a layer of congealed casein illustrates how strong our visual perception is allied to touch, memories, associations and visceral emotions. But what is the relationship between sight, skin, touch and gut feelings and textiles? Textile not only appeals to the visual perception but also to our largest organ – skin with its tactile sensors. In just one square centimetre of skin there are 7.5 million cells, 245 sweat glands, 25 hairs, 2.5 metres of blood vessels, 7,500 sensory nerves and 8 million microscopic organisms. The most precise sense of touch is located in the fingertips, where the highest concentration of nerve endings is to be found.ʼ... 893 words NL/ENG 2014 State of the crafts ! 2015 The wearable zoo - review of jewelry exhibition Arnhem for Art Jewelry Forum

! ʻLast Friday, Museum Arnhem in The Netherlands launched a much anticipated exhibition about jewelry and taxidermia: ʻBeauty of the beastʼ shows 51 works, ranging from 19th century pieces to contemporary jewelry via fine Art sculpture and installation. Taxidermia – the process of skillfully conserving dead animals or pieces of animals - is a difficult theme for any artform to tackle because of the obvious emotional, political, scientific and environmental issues it brings up in this century. Pets, industrial farming, wearing fur, genetic manipulation, depletion of nature and the diversity of species (bye bye, bees!): this long, sad list reflects the ambivalent attitude of humans who wield destructive power while professing a great admiration for beasts.ʼ Art Jewelry Forum 600 words
