Welcome

&

BG YOU Welcome to the fourth edition of BG & You, your guide to what’s happening at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln. After a fairly quiet Summer break (oh, you know, just hosting the Olympic torch for a night, enjoying a grand graduation - the usual!) BG is back with a bang! The campus has seen some amazing changes over the past few months, with our library extension on course for a grand opening in September and the Students’ Union now as bright and inspiring as the people it represents. But arguably the biggest development is the launch of The Venue - Lincoln's newest cinema, right here on campus. Read on for more details of films and showing times throughout the rest of the year. Perhaps you prefer your activities more...well, active? Then take a look at our sports facilities and fitness class timetable, or come to campus and support our many teams who have qualified this year for the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) tournaments. Hopefully you’ll find this guide useful and informative. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the next edition in January 2013, by which time our application for full University status will have come through and we will hopefully have become Bishop Grosseteste University!

Lincoln's Newest Cinema Launched At BG!

In July this year, we started renovation work on our theatre building to install state-of-the-art digital projection equipment and a surround sound system. We also undertook a full refurbishment of the inside of the theatre, from the seating in the auditorium to the theatre bar. We are now proud to announce that 'The Venue', Lincoln's newest cinema is open for business! Fully open to the public and with a great variety of films throughout the year, we're sure you'll want to come and take a look. The Venue is currently the only cinema in uphill Lincoln and aims to cater for most tastes. A full cinema programme has been introduced, beginning with a showing of 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' on 5th September. The Venue will also continue to be the home of the Lincoln Film Society - look out for their varied season of films, from 'Carnage' to 'The Great White Silence'. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.bishopg.ac.uk/thevenue, email [email protected] or call (01522) 583681.

ted

From the creator of Family Guy, this hilarious comedy sees a young boy’s wish come true when his favourite teddy bear is magically brought to life to be his best friend - forever. But with John (Mark Wahlberg) now in his early 30s and ready to settle down with the love of his life, Lori (Mila Kunis), the time has come to move on and for Ted to move out of the flat they have been sharing. Things aren’t going to be that easy though. Rude, politically incorrect and laugh-out-loud funny, TED is set to be the must-see comedy of the summer, full of the surreal humour and set-ups that make Family Guy so great, but this time with a decidedly bear-shaped twist.

Sports at BG

Women’s Football at BG For the first time, 2012 saw the Bishop Grosseteste Women’s Football Team being placed in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) - league 3A. The girls were excited at the prospect of challenging other Universities who have always been in BUCS. The league had the likes of Nottingham Trent University (2nd and 3rd), Coventry 1st, Warwick 2nd, Staffordshire University 1st, Aston University 1st, University of Derby 1st and University of Derby (Buxton) 1st. It was a tough challenge ahead. Our first game was away at the University of Warwick. The girls were all nervous going into the game due to it being the first Women’s Football BUCS game for Bishop Grosseteste University College. It turned out to be a great day, winning 11-1. The girls were buzzing and carried on the momentum throughout the season in which they became BUCS women’s champions, going unbeaten all season in the league! Results - BG Victories! University of Warwick – won 11-1 Coventry University – won 2-1 University of Nottingham – won 9-1 University of Derby (Buxton) – won 11-3 University of Derby – won 7-4 University of Nottingham – won 11-1 Aston University – won 11-0 (Written by Gemma Charlton)

BG’s Olympic Role

The Olympics may have come and gone now, but you may not be aware that here at BG, we played our own small part in the occasion. As the Olympic flame made its way through the streets of Lincoln during the torch parade, feverish prepeartions were being made to prepare for its overnight stay with us. The flame was kept under high security on our campus where 200 staff and around 40 vehicles spent the night before setting off to Nottingham the following day. Senior management at the university college heard last year that they had successfully bid to host the Olympic Torch relay team, but staff and students at BG weren't told until the day before it was due to arrive. Such was the security surrounding the overnight stay that no-one from the university college was told exactly where on campus the Olympic flame was kept. "This is a real coup for BG and we were delighted to be chosen by LOCOG to accommodate the torch relay team during the Lincoln leg," said Rob Jones, Director of BG Enterprise. "A number of high-profile venues in the area put in bids to host the relay and it's another feather in our cap in our 150th anniversary year that we were chosen as the host venue."

28

BG’s Olympic Role

(Official) Torch Bearers of BG Two of our students – Jade Etherington and James Roark – were selected to carry the Olympic torch through Lincolnshire on its way to London before the start of the Olympic Games. Jade (20) from Bourne and James (21) from Horncastle were rewarded for their contributions to sport and the community.

Jade Etherington Jade studied Education and Geography and was nominated by BG to carry the torch. A partially-sighted alpine ski racer suffering from Glaucoma and Axenfield’s Syndrome – a genetic condition that causes fluid blockages in the eye and can lead to total blindness. Jade is aiming to qualify for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia with the British Disabled Ski Team. “I’ve never done anything like this before,” said Jade. “Carrying the Olympic torch this year is a brilliant opportunity for me to become involved with the Olympic experience leading up to the 2014 games in Russia. Hopefully, my being an Olympic torchbearer will also help raise awareness about the Paralympic Games while representing Lincoln as a sporting city.”

James Roark James is a Horncastle native and studied Sport and Education at BG. He is also a swimming instructor and lifeguard at Horncastle Swimming Pool, where he has been teaching people ranging from three to 80 years old how to swim for four years. He was selected as an Olympic torch bearer for the difference he’s made in the community through teaching swimming to people in the area. “It’s an honour and a privilege to be offered this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said James. “I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience about the sport – whether it be educating young children about the fun and enjoyment of swimming as a leisure activity, instructing athletes on how to swim competitively, or teaching adults that never learnt to swim as a child how to swim. Being a competitive swimmer from a young age and reaching county and regional level over the years makes seeing people enjoy something I enjoy even more rewarding.”

Advent

We would like to extend an invitation to you to join us at our annual Advent Carol Service in Lincoln Cathedral. As a University College which continues to express and explore its Church foundation, this service gives us an opportunity to mark the beginning of the Church’s season of Advent with readings, prayer and song. This event is a highlight of the BG year which allows friends and past students of the University College to join with those of us who still study and work here. As in past years, a significant number of our own students will be contributing to the service in a variety of ways as we interweave traditional bible texts with modern literature, and music with drama, in the presentation of this year’s Advent theme. 3pm start. Contact [email protected] for more details and tickets.

Open to all 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am - 2pm on weekends, our coffee shop serves a range of coffees, speciality teas, home-made cakes, panini, and healthy lunch options.

Multi-skill Sessions for Primary Schools

Multi-skill is a non-sports-specific activity based on the FUNdamentals of movement (agility, balance and co-ordination). These essential fundamental movement skills should be practiced and mastered before sport-specific skills are introduced as they provide the base for future all round development in most sports. Qualified multi-skill coaches are available to run after school multi-skill sessions in local primary schools. For more information please contact Gemma Fogg 01522 583621 or [email protected]

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

“Here at BG, from the most senior staff to the newest of students, we are all really excited when an opportunity comes along to work with the community that surrounds us. The musicals society has always been pleased to welcome the community in to see our annual shows but this year we are going one step further and will be involving the community in our show. In March 2013, the society will be putting on a production of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and the children’s chorus that is integral to the show will be a group from St Hugh’s Catholic Primary School. They will be led by their teacher and choirmaster, Daniel Ballard; himself an ex-BG student, he had this to say on the project: ‘BG has played a large part in my life and I am very excited at the prospect of working so closely with students from BG to put on this classic show. Working with the students is going to be fabulous opportunity for our children, and to see the students from BG applying all they have learnt on their courses with our children will be equally as exciting. I can’t wait to get started!’ As soon as the society gets going fully in September, students from BG will begin to work closely with the pupils and staff at St Hugh’s Catholic Primary School in the production of the show. Keep an eye out in your next copy of BG & You for more details on the dates and times to see Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat performed in The Venue at BG by this unique collaboration.” (Written by Paul Jackson, President of the Musicals Society 2012/13)
