Friday 21st September Last day of term 3 Monday 24th to Friday 28th September 2012. Year 12 Study Camp at Jamberoo Valley Lodge October 12th to 14th Middle Years J Camp

From the Head of Junior School Last week was a very busy time for the College, many of you have now met with your child’s teacher and it was great to see how the College and home can work so closely together for the benefit of each of our children. Please take on board the advice that you have received, it is so important for home to reinforce the learning that is taking place during the day. Reading each night with your child, playing number games, helping them with their homework really makes a difference. The Athletics carnival on Friday was a great success. The students did their best and were very encouraging to each other. A very big thank you to all the parent helpers and supporters. A highlight for me is to see how well the Senior students work with the children, helping them with the field events and always providing encouragement. The South West Festival is almost here and the children are very excited. This year each class has been producing some high quality artwork under the guidance of our art teacher that will be for sale in the Silent Auction. I wonder which parent will get to keep this memento of the year? Make sure that you visit the Silent Auction and place a bid. You also would have received a plate or cake box this week and I would like to invite you to return it full of amazing cakes that we can sell. This is a very practical way that you can help the P and F make the day a great success. It is always a fun day and I hope to see you all here supporting the College.

Christine Bessant Head of Junior School

From the Head of Senior School As we draw near to the end of our Olympic campaign there may have been a collective disappointment over some of the performances of our Australian team. I found some of this criticism overly harsh, placing ‘blame’ on individuals or teams that sacrificed and worked extremely hard to even put themselves in a position to compete at an Olympic level. As our Year 12 students complete their HSC Trials there may be a temptation to respond in equally negative ways after the results come out. It is important to remember that the Trial Examinations can prove more difficult than the Final HSC Examinations and consequently students, and their parents, may feel that the Trial results were a disaster. This then just adds to the pressure and the negative mindsets as students come to the final preparation for the HSC. I would ask all the students not to give up at this point. There is still time to make amends. It is doing all the small things well and doing these small things consistently that will make the difference. Where there has been a wrong answer or a weak section of a paper there is time to make adjustments and correct the mistakes. Rather than just ignoring the problem or developing a negative mindset it is much more strategic to take some time to look at the area of weakness and either seek assistance or practice the skills to develop a better understanding of the concepts required to master the course content. Mr Whelan has been talking to the students about 3 keys to finding success at College: 1) Consistency; 2) Practice and 3) Seeking appropriate assistance when required.

Congratulations to Gabriella Abrahams who has made it through to the district final of the, “Legacy Public Speaking” competition which is open to all students from Yrs 7, 8, 9 and 10. Year 11 student Ashley Chegwyn also made it through to the finals of the SMH Plain Speaking Competition and did extremely well at this highly competitive level. Congratulations to Mrs. Pettett & Mr. Seccombe in helping to develop skills and enthusiasm for this important learning skill of the College. We have had a number of students reaching the finals of the Written Portraits Competition. The top prize for this competition is a grant of $5,000 towards the College Literacy Program. Students reaching the finals include: Peter O'Mara, Gita Naidu, Joanna Manivong, Roma Kumar, Sara Duncan, Matthew Dobrincic, Sarah Milne and Natalie Zomaya. Some of this work will be edited and published in an anthology of short stories. Congratulations to the large number of students involved in this project. A special mention must also be made of the English Department who have nurtured and developed these students. There are many other activities and events that I could comment upon which reflect the positive approach students are taking to the challenges they face. We join with you to encourage all the students in all that they are maturing in their learning. Finally I want to acknowledge the great God that we serve as we ask Him for strength to do our best to overcome disappointments and trials.

This approach is relevant to all that we do across the College.

1 Peter 1:6-7 There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested In recognition to some of this hard work, I am thrilled to as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far see the College developing strength in debating and pubmore precious than mere gold. lic speaking. This has included strong results in the Misa Debating Competition and more recently the HICES Debating Competition where our Year 10/9 Team (Gabriella Abraham; Patrick Quinn-Bryant; Winona Och and Shivly Sing), made it through the initial rounds undefeated. There are over 160 teams (from 38 schools) in this comRoger Young petition and our Year 10 was one of only a select group Head of Senior School of teams to go through un-defeated at all levels.

Sport and self-esteem Does coming second in the Olympics make you a loser?

Some people have even said Australia hasn’t won more gold because they are spending too much time on Facebook and Twitter! Reading what people think about you before a race, or responding to comments after disappointment is enough to break down even the toughest athlete. God’s coaching manual, The Bible, has some great words of wisdom about how we should see ourselves. What gives us value as people is that we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27) and we are uniquely formed and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14). Every person has great dignity and value because God made them – yes, even you!

Winning the greatest prize Is second place a failure?

The gospel message is that God does even more than this: it is by his achievement, not our own, that we are acceptable to Him.

Did you enjoy the Olympic Games? We all know winning silver is nice, but not as good as gold. It seems like our athletes have been giving us this message as Ephesians 2:8-9 speaks to people who like to work to achieve their own goals: well. It was tough seeing swimmer Emily Seebohm break down as she fronted the media after winning a silver medal. She had a taste of gold in the 4 x 100 metre freestyle, Australia’s only gold after 6 days of competition. However, after ‘losing’ the 100 metre backstroke final, heartbroken and fighting back tears, she told the world's media that she had let down her parents and Australia. Upon reflection, she realised she hadn’t let anyone down, except herself a little, but reported that the pressure had been huge. On Twitter, Emily wrote “When people start telling you you are going to win, maybe you start to believe it and I hadn’t even swum”. James Magnussen is another swimmer who has felt the huge pressure the athletes have been under. His failure to win a medal in the 4 x 100 metre relay was his first real experience of disappointment in his swimming career. He commented that “I have learnt more about life in the in the last 2 days than I have in the last 20 years”. His silver in the 100 metre freestyle, missing gold by only a finger-tip of 0.01 secs, gave him another tough learning experience.

Ever get disappointed with yourself?

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing: it is a gift from God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

The title of Olympic gold medallist brings great pride and prestige, but it cannot bring us eternal life, or earn us the right to be called God’s children (John 1:12). The Apostle Paul had won it all in his former life as a Jewish teacher. But when he became a Christian he wrote in Philippians 3:12-14: Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Jesus Christ has made me his own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for what the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Olympic athletes and social sportspeople need to see that their identity is found in how God has made them and what he has done for them through Jesus. This knowledge will cause us to press on for the ultimate goal of eternal life, which God has already awarded us. Surely this is worth more than gold! Year 2 Poems This term in HSIE Year 2 is learning about children’s lives in the olden days and comparing it with their own lives now. We look at how things have changed over the decades.

As an introduction to the unit, we looked at how we ourselves have changed since were born. To help us appreciate the changes in ourselves, we read a poem written by A.A Milne “Now We Are Six”.

I was hardly me. When I was Four, I was not much more When I was Five,

We then wrote our own poem using the style of A.A Milne. Here are some of our poems. We hope that you will enjoy reading them.

Jacqui, The Bug ,Lady visits Thomas Hassall On Thursday 19th July, Jacqui the Bug Lady visited Year One. She came because we learnt about insects last term. First, Jacqui set up her equipment (magnifying glasses, real insects, insects in glass and leaves for the stick insects). Then all of Year One sat down ready for the show. Next, Jacqui showed us her collection of arachnids which included spiders and scorpions. After an hour seeing all of her different types of insects, we all went out to recess. When recess ended each class got to gently pat the
