ABOUT THE BRANDS

ANTENNAS

Since the 1970s, Shakespeare® Classic Antennas have been manufactured to provide basic communication and navigation capabilities. The Classic Series covers the widest variety of vessels in the Shakespeare® family. (Classic Series antennas are not recommended for mounting on hard-tops.)

6

Reliability Begins with Quality Construction

Shakespeare fiberglass antennas are built with precision, beginning with hand-soldered connections, brass and copper elements, strong mechanical joints and superior electronics. The radiator and electrical elements are then encased in our exclusive Shakespeare fiberglass radomes.

Choosing the Proper Antenna

Antenna Length

Gain and Beamwidth

Low Angle Radiation

Since many factors influence the selection of the most appropriate antenna for a specific application, we encourage consultation with a local dealer whenever possible. For instances where this is not possible, the following tips should be considered before making a final decision.

Two key performance parameters for antennas are gain and beamwidth.

Gain

Gain is a measure of how much of the input power is concentrated in a particular direction, expressed with reference to an antenna radiating in all directions equally at the same power level, stated in decibels (dB). Generally, the higher the gain, the greater the communication range.

Length is of paramount importance when deciding on an optimal antenna for your vessel. Remember that the higher an antenna is mounted and the further it extends upward, the better signal broadcast and reception will be. That said, be sure to allow adequate lay down room for clearing low bridge of other obstacles.

Shakespeare helped boaters manage the gain vs. beamwidth compromise by pioneering low angle radiation techniques in the 1960’s, and incorporating this technology into our line of marine antennas. Low angle minimizes fading while maximizing range, even during excessive boat roll in turbulent seas. A normal angle does not offer as much range and wastes power in non-effective areas.

Beamwidth

Beamwidth, in generalized terms, is the angular separation between the half power points on an antenna’s radiation pattern. The relationship between gain and beamwidth is important when selecting an appropriate antenna. As gain increases, beamwidth is compressed or narrowed. A narrow beam can cause fading in rough or rolling seas. Small, lightweight boats, which tend to roll excessively in heavy seas, normally do not use an antenna with a gain rating higher than 6dB. Larger or more stable vessels can use higher gain antennas effectively.

Mounting your antenna Mounts

ABOUT THE BRANDS

Choosing the Right Antenna

Choosing the right antenna mount is equally as important as selecting the right antenna to ensure reliable communications, and to avoid damage to either the antenna and/or the vessel. Select a mount style designed for the installation location and method that works best for your particular boat. Remember to account for lay down room to clear bridges, overpasses and other obstacles. When using a twopiece antenna greater than 10’ in length, and upper support clamp should also be installed. For antennas of 14’-18’, the upper clamp should be 3’ to 5’ from the base of the antenna. For antennas of 18’ to 23’, the upper clamp should be 4’ to 8’ from the base. Positioning the upper clamp to high or too low will significantly increase the potential for structural failure. Shakespeare quality mounts are designed and tested to compliment and support our antennas in a wide variety of applications.

Cable

RG-58 cable is sufficient for cable runs up to 20’. For longer runs, RG-8X, RG-8A/U, or RG-213 are better choices offering thicker and more robust jacketing and better efficiency. Shakespeare uses low-loss RG-8X throughout its Galaxy® antenna line. For optimum performance from your VHF, HF/ SSB and cellular communication systems, the cable should be kept as short as possible. Shakespeare offers a full line of field-installable connectors that enable a custom and optimized installation on your vessel. Be sure to thoroughly review all Shakespeare antenna instructions sheets, as some cables supplied with some antennas may not be cut or altered.

AIS ANTENNAS

A

utomatic identification systems (AIS) are used to automatically identify and track ships and other watercraft

by electronically exchanging data with other ships, AIS base stations and satellites. This technology is used for collision avoidance, fishing fleet monitoring and control, vessel traffic services, maritime security, search and rescue, etc. Recent amendments to the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG) AIS code require vessels of various sizes operating in or visiting U.S. waters to be outfitted with a USCG type-approved and properly installed operational AIS no later than March 1st, 2016. Selecting a quality Shakespeare® Marine AIS antenna for your AIS system will ensure compliance to the USCG AIS code, and our AIS antennas are available in various styles and sizes to match our other VHF-style antennas. Reach and antenna mounting guidelines for AIS antennas are very similar to a traditional VHF antennas: Tall AIS antennas mounted on larger ships can provide an effective range of about 60 nautical miles (111 Km) when paired with an appropriate AIS system, while smaller antennas mounted on small vessels can extend effective communication to roughly 5 nautical miles (9 Km).
