Transforming Remediation • Remove factors that make Learning Support a major barrier to college completion. • Redesign remediation so as to move students through into collegiate courses as quickly as possible.

georgia summit

Changes . . . • Evaluation for Learning Support Placement – Placement Indices

• Format for Learning Support – Move to mainly corequisite remediation

• Remove “gotchas” from Learning Support – Withdrawals – Attempts – Exclusion

• Change the way that students exit Learning Support • Implications for admissions georgia summit

Evaluation for Learning Support Placement • Old: Unless students had SAT or ACT scores high enough to exempt placement testing (SAT>=400 math, 430 verbal or ACT>=17 English and math), they were required to take Compass placement tests, and their placement into, or exemption from, Learning Support was based entirely on their score on the Compass tests. georgia summit

Evaluation for Learning Support Placement

• New: Students with SAT>=400 math, 430 verbal or ACT>=17 English and math still exempt placement testing. For all other students, English (EPI) and mathematics (MPI) placement indices are calculated based on SAT or ACT (when available) and high school grade point average (when available). Students may place into or exempt Learning Support without taking a placement test. If any of these factors are not available, placement testing will be required. georgia summit

Multiple weighted measures Indices will be composed of: 1) HSGPA and SAT or ACT - when both are available 2) HSGPA and COMPASS - when neither SAT or ACT are available (possible at some access institutions) 3) SAT or ACT and COMPASS – when HSGPA is not available (home-schooled students) 4) COMPASS - when neither HSGPA nor SAT nor ACT is available (non-traditional students) georgia summit

Format for Learning Support Courses

• As of Fall 2015, the majority of students requiring remediation should be placed in corequisite Learning Support courses. • Corequisite Learning Support means that students take a 1-2 credit Learning Support course while ALSO taking a Gateway collegiate course. • Gateway collegiate courses are Area A courses: ENGL 1101, MATH 1001, MATH 1101, or MATH 1111

Learning Support Areas • PREVIOUSLY: Three Learning Support areas: English, reading, and mathematics. • NOW (as of Fall 2015): There are three Learning Support areas: English (reading/writing) and mathematics

Corequisite Learning Support • The goal of corequisite Learning Support is to support students in acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to pass the Gateway (collegiate) course, WHILE they are taking the Gateway course.

Foundations Learning Support • Some less prepared students will still be required to begin in “stand-alone” Learning Support courses, called Foundations courses. • Goal of Foundations courses is to prepare students for success in Gateway courses.

Learning Support Sequences • There are separate Foundations-level and corequisite courses for each of the Gateway courses. Foundations for English Composition

ENGL 1101 + Corequisite Learning Support

Foundations for Quantitative Reasoning

MATH 1001 + Corequisite Learning Support

Foundations for Mathematical Modeling

MATH 1101 + Corequisite Learning Support

Foundations for College Algebra

MATH 1111 + Corequisite Learning Support

Remove “Gotchas” from Learning Support Withdrawals • Students may not drop or withdraw from the corequisite course without dropping or withdrawing from the Gateway course and vice versa. • Students who withdraw from the Learning Support courses will no longer be required to withdraw from collegiate courses not directly related to the Learning Support requirement. georgia summit

Attempts • PREVIOUSLY: Students had 3 attempts to exit Learning Support math and 2 attempts to exit Learning Support English. • NOW: Students have 2 attempts to exit Foundations level or be excluded for a year. • Students have unlimited attempts at Corequisite Learning Support. georgia summit

University System of Georgi a

Exclusion • PREVIOUSLY: Students on exclusion could complete Learning Support requirements or receive transfer credit for any courses taken while on exclusion. • NOW: Students may complete Learning Support requirements at a TCSG or private institution while on exclusion. Students may also receive transfer credit for collegiate courses taken while on exclusion. georgia summit

Change the Way that Students Exit Learning Support • Through Fall 2013 – Students had to pass a Compass Exit Test to exit Learning Support • After Fall 2013 – Compass Exit Test requirement was removed. Students just had to pass the Learning Support course to exit Learning Support. • Starting Fall 2015 – Students exit Learning Support by passing the Gateway course in that area. georgia summit

Implications for Admissions Basic admissions requirements are unchanged. • Students who meet admissions criteria for regular admissions (minimum Freshman Index, and SAT or ACT scores), do not need to be screened for Learning Support. • Students who fall below minimum criteria for limited admissions still are not admitted. georgia summit

University System of Georgi a

Changes in 2012 linked Learning Support changes to admission. • Students placing into all three areas of Learning Support could not be admitted. • Students scoring below the “floor score” in any Learning Support area could not be admitted. • Challenge to the access mission.

georgia summit

University System of Georgi a

NOW: Changes to Learning Support are designed to restore access. • Students who place into both areas of Learning Support can be admitted. • Students who score below the “floor scores” in both Learning Support areas still cannot be admitted. • Students who score below the “floor score” in only one area may be admitted if their score in the other area is high enough. georgia summit
