Layton Park neighbors, Imelda Gonzalez and her husband, Sergio, invest their time and efforts into their home and in their neighborhood for their familys future!

Fourteen years ago, after months of searching for a home, they moved to Layton Park. “When we came here it was clean and family oriented,” shared Imelda, “it suited us perfectly!”

Their vision was to eventually purchase an additional home as an investment for their three daughters’ futures. When they first initiated that process it seemed overwhelming, until they contacted LBWN for support! “We were very lucky to find such a great [second] home in the same neighborhood,” tells Imelda. Imelda and Sergio were able to hear about these resources through their involvement in LBWN block clubs and by attending the Home Improvement Fairs that are offered in both the Spring and the Fall. LBWN connected the Gonzalez family to options for purchase financing and home improvement resources that allowed them to find the home they were looking for, as well as... (Continued on page 7)

Your antique wooden windows looking old, feeling drafty, sticking, etc?

Window panes might be broken, sashes and sills may be rotten, or putty is falling out. But, keep those wood windows! After 100 years, any product will look tired. What you don’t see in your wooden windows is what they look like refurbished: wood repaired where soft, stripped and repainted, clean putty applied, new glass where broken, weatherstripped and replaned to close tight as a drum.

When its weights are balanced, a repaired window glides up and down in its frame with two fingers and stays open at any height you like. In fact, if it’s energy savings you’re worried about, windows should be your last concern. Adding insulation and air-sealing will be much better investments. The best part is, your refurbished wooden window will last another 100 years with a little care, such as spot painting or varnishing, and replacing the putty every 30 years.

Most vinyl replacement windows are expected to last 5 to 20 years before they warp, crack or de-gas — and they can’t be repaired! Window repair is simple, but it’s time-consuming. Dedicated do-it-yourselfers can easily learn how and repair their windows in their basements or garages! Hiring it out can be expensive, sometimes more expensive than plastic replacement windows. The return is in a replacement window lifespan; if you replace your windows, figure on replacing them every 20 years. Repairing your windows will be a better investment, and you’ll enjoy the beauty of real wood windows instead of white plastic.

Nearly 2,000 Attendees at Food & Art Walk / 2,000 Personas Asisten al Festival de Comida & Arte On Saturday, September 24th the Silver City neighborhood celebrated the 5th Annual Silver City International Food & Art Walk. From 33rd to 35th St on National Ave you could see the cultural diversity of this neighborhood through food, music, dancing and art. Nearly 2,000 attendees “traveled the world” in the Silver City neighborhood. Attendees were able to eat foods from Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador, Thailand, Laos, and Italy. While performances included a variety of cultures from Mexican folkloric dance, traditional African and Caribbean dance and drumming, dances from Laos, Native American dance, Irish folk music and Brazilian jazz. El sábado 24 de septiembre, el barrio de Silver City celebró el 5º Anual Festival Internacional de Comida y Arte. Desde la calle 33 y 35 en la avenida Nacional se podía ver la diversidad cultural de este barrio a través de la comida, la música, el baile y el arte. Cerca de 2,000 asistentes “viajaron por el mundo” en el barrio de Silver City. Asistentes fueron capaces de comer alimentos de México, Brasil, Cuba, El Salvador, Tailandia, Laos, e Italia. Mientras actuaciones incluyeron una variedad de culturas de la danza folklórica mexicana, danza y música tradicional africana y del caribe, bailes de Laos, la danza indígena americana, la música popular irlandesa y el jazz brasileño. El evento de este año duplicó su tamaño en comparación con el año pasado. ¡Ya estamos mirando hacia adelante para el próximo año!
