ave you ever
held onto a coupon or a movie pass for so long that by the time you remember to use it, it has expired? I certainly have! And I usually make that discovery just as I approach the check-out counter. Sometimes the cashier has chesed v’rachamim – mercy – on me and lets me use it anyway… but not always. Those few steps up to the cash register are always fraught with the unknown. Our High Holiday – Yamim Noraim – period is similar in many ways. Each year, we are given a “coupon,” redeemable for several weeks of reflection upon our successes and challenges, and focus on what we can do to bring greater meaning, purpose, and holiness into our lives. But not only does this coupon have an expiration date, is has an expiration second. That second is the moment that the shofar is sounded as Yom Kippur draws to a close, as the “gates are sealed” and our fast comes to an
end. Our challenge is to redeem our “coupon” before that moment arrives. What does it really mean to reflect on our success and challenges? How does one focus on bringing more meaning or holiness to our lives? There are no easy answers to these questions. Even Socrates - not a Jew, in case you are wondering recognized that an “unexamined life was not worth living.” He insisted that self-inquiry and introspection led to a more fulfilling life. So, too, does our Jewish tradition give us each that same responsibility. But, how? Allow me to offer one process – of many possible methods – for selfreflection. I have offered below a series of questions as one way to help you get started. I encourage you to take these seriously; perhaps you might want to tear out this page and bring it with you to the synagogue in the coming weeks. Use some of your time in our beautiful sanctuary to reflect upon your answers. What brought me the most joy this year? The most pain? Who did I hurt, and how can I make up for what I have done?

Who do I need to forgive and how can I go about forgiving them? What are the most important relationships in my life and how can I nurture them in the coming year? What do I regret not doing this year? What was a Jewish high-point for me this year? What was a Jewish low-point? What was my relationship with God like this year? How did Judaism affect my life this year? Am I satisfied with Judaism’s role in my life? With my synagogue’s role in my life? What are my goals in life and what I am I doing to achieve them? Where do I see myself in five years, ten years, or twenty years? If I could change one thing about myself, what would it be?
The High Holiday period is referred to in our tradition as the “Aseret Y’mei Teshuvah” – the Ten Days of Repentance. Teshuvah not only means “repentance,” it also means to turn - towards oneself, toward your fellow human beings, or toward God. In doing so, you can bring kedusha, holiness, and shleimut, wholeness, into your life. If it is done honestly, this process will give you deep insight into who you are, where you have been during this past year, and where you hope to be going.

President’s Message—The Year In Review
I hope everyone had a safe and pleasant summer. Here at TBS things were still hopping. We had a new program, movie night, along with the continuation of Shabbat in Community and also welcomed our summer intern Michael Kushnick. Michael taught two adult education classes, led services and filled in for Rabbi Hammerman and was a wonderful addition for the summer while our hard working Rabbi took some needed vacation. There have been so many new and wonderful programs throughout the past year, I really don’t know where to begin. Perhaps the simplest way is actually from the start of our year. We first welcomed our new Rabbi with his award winning bike-in to TBS. This was an amazing event and very well attended and publicized. This was followed by our official installation which saw a whopping 200 guests attend. Next were the high holidays which went extremely well. Our Sukkoth celebrations saw our sukkah being utilized for several dinners with attendance so large we actually had to expand our sukkah. Simchat Torah was another first for us. We not only enjoyed the music of a Klezma band but we also took to the streets to celebrate. In December we had a homemade (or made in the temple) kosher Chinese Shabbat Dinner and we had a Murder Mystery Night which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. In December Sisterhood presented a latke throw down with different categories, one of which yours truly won! Passover Seder at TBS saw 100 people join together to celebrate as a community. Our Temple Times and several congregants were honored with awards. A Baby, Toddler and Me class was offered and will be renewed for this year. We received $14,300 in grants from UJA for programs that encompass pairing our TBS youth with senior citizens, Babies and Me subsidy and assistance with our Shabbat school teaching. TBS was also the recipient of more than $5000 in donations from individual congregants for our new Cantor and the PJ Library Program. We have
hired a lovely new part time Cantor, Rachael Littman. We are looking forward to many terrific programs that she will lead. I personally have learned so much in my first year as president. I have learned that this community can do anything we set our minds to do. We are small in size but huge in heart, we rally around one another when the lifting of a spirit is needed, just ask and someone will come to help, we are welcoming to all those that enter our spiritual home, we can agree to disagree and there is always a solution to any problem when we work together. What exactly is the meaning of high holy days? Here is the official definition. The High Holidays or High Holy Days, in Judaism, more properly known as the Yamim Noraim (Hebrew: " ימים נוראיםDays of Awe"). The strict definition is, the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur or the period of ten days including those holidays, known also as the Ten Days of Repentance (Aseret Yemei Teshuvah); or the entire 40-day penitential period in the Jewish year from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur, traditionally taken to represent the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai before coming down with the second set of the Tablets of stone. Many prefer the term High Holy Days because it emphasizes the personal, reflective, introspective aspects of this period, while Holidays suggests a time of communal celebrations of events in the history of the Jewish people. I will, and I hope you will, take this time to reflect on all that we have, both personally and as a community. A time to come together as a community to celebrate and look back at our year, at what was ordinary and what was extraordinary. To begin again with a new slate and institute change. Once again I will be asking that you make a Yom Kipper donation. Whether big or small, it will continue to help us move forward with our fabulous programs. I urge all of you to come and spend some time in TBS during the next few weeks and months. We have so many new programs and projects that are available; there will be something that catches your attention. La ‘Shana Tova Fondly, Georgene Perlman

Welcome Cantor Rachael Littman After an extensive Cantorial search, it is our pleasure to welcome our new Cantor Rachael Littman to Temple Beth Shalom. Cantor Littman graduated from JTS in 2005. Since then, she has utilized her talents and ability in a number of interesting and diverse ways – including designing and implementing many new programs. One of the programs was called the Yad Squad. It was a program for post B’nai Mitzvah age students who met monthly with Cantor Littman for dinner and learning. Another program was Shabbat Unplugged. It was a Friday night service that utilized a four piece band and back-up singers. Over the past six years, Cantor Littman has worked in synagogues in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Cantor Littman is a resourceful, innovative, energetic and enthusiastic worker. She brings her broad experience, broad range of skills, and a wealth of new, exciting, and interesting ideas to
our community. Cantor Littman will be participating in Saturday morning Shabbat School as well as many other programs and activities TBS. Cantor Littman views her passion and love of music as a way to connect with the all of members of Temple Beth Shalom. She is eagerly looking forward to working with Rabbi Hammerman, the TBS Board, our professional staff, and our Temple congregation. Her goal is to serve both the tangible and spiritual needs of the congregation in every way possible. It is quite evident that our Temple Beth Shalom community will be enriched and enhanced by Cantor Littman’s presence. Music, no matter how we may hear, can instill a feeling of serenity and harmony – an environment in which all things become possible! We welcome Cantor Littman and know she will be a wonderful and exciting asset to our Temple family!!
Hebrew School News We begin 5772 with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and energy when school starts on Sunday September 11 at 9AM. We will begin the year with some special programming for parents and children alike that morning. Come and learn about many of the special events planned for the first few months of school. Parents, take a few minutes that morning to meet your child’s teacher and get acquainted with other parents in your child’s class. This is a wonderful chance to arrange car pools, sign up for class parent and help us in our networking efforts. In as much as we recognize that much of Jewish life emerges from shared and meaningful family experiences we kick off our Shabbat school program for this year on Saturday Sept 24. Be sure and stay for lunch as we move forward in our goals of engaging children and their families in meaningful Jewish learning. Once again we are asking you to see what we are doing through different eyes when you mark your calendar for Wednesday October 12 as we
celebrate Sukkot at Hebrew School by having dinner in the sukkah combined with family oriented activities in place of regular classes that evening. This year we are delighted to be the recipients of both the Express Innovations Grant and the generous bequest left to us by Pearl Meyer. The first will partner with us to move forward with our Shabbat School concept, while the second has allowed us to renovate our classrooms with new desks and chairs as well as installing better lighting, white and bulletin boards. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our class dinners, family services and varied events designed with your entire family in mind. Shana Tova,

Ritual Committee News Alicia Raskob, Ritual Committee Chair The summer may be over, but it was a good one. We had a rabbinic intern, Michael Kushnik, here for six weeks with his lovely wife Talia. He led services, and they had visitors for Shabbat, which was good because then we had enough Torah readers. He led a Friday service at Lake Macgregor on a beautiful evening, which was hosted by Marlene and Allan Hochberg, so thank you to them. We really enjoyed the novelty of Shabbat at the beach for a second time; it is nice being more casual in the summer. Michael taught very interesting classes on life cycle events, and learning about services. It was a treat to get to know him. We had Tisha B'Av at camp and drove to Putnam Valley and saw a Jewish camp experience dealing with the tragedies that befell the Jewish people. Now we are in the midst of the High Holidays. Services are being led by Jacob Feldman, our cantorial soloist, with the choir assisting. We wish him well,
and hope that you are all enjoying your TBS experience. By now you may have met Cantor Rachael Littman, who is here for one weekend each month. She will be doing a lot at TBS with all different age groups, from the PJ Library with young children, to the teen group. We are looking forward to some shows and special events....you'll see! Thank you to Joel Greenberg and Marc Kandel for being the service coordinators for the summer months. Thank you to Lynn Michaels for all her work with the Torah portions and more. To Bernice and Jeff Guest, for arranging the High Holiday honors, Torah readers, and many other details, thank you for all your hard work. It is greatly appreciated. Alicia Raskob, Ritual Chairperson

Rahel Safira bat Reuven September 10, 2011 Rachel's mom and dad are very proud of Rachel becoming a Bat Mitzvah. We at Temple Beth Shalom agree that she is most eager to please and is a hard worker. Rachel's dad has shared that, "Rachel is a remarkable young lady who has attained a remarkable achievement." While on summer break from Mahopac Middle School she continues to prepare for her portion of the service. While attending Soccer Camp and Horse Back Riding Camp, Rachel continues to stay close with her friends, going swimming and to movies. She and her two cousins, Melissa and Christine are very close in age (only two weeks apart from each other) and also enjoy spending time together. Rachel volunteers spending many hours at the 4H Fair entertaining with puppets. She helps to dress them in different costumes and makes them entertain young children. Her puppeteering helps to teach the children good habits such as: how to take care of a pet, it is wise not to begin smoking. She enjoys caring for pets volunteering to walk the dogs at the Putnam Humane Society. For her project she took care of a puppy, a Havanese named Skyla, fostering it and then adopting it. These experiences of care have helped Rachel to think about a career as a physician's assistant. For now, Rachel is excited about achieving her Bat Mitzvah and looks forward to her celebration at Traditions in Granite Springs. There is sure to be loud music and dancing to a DJ. We wish her continued success and much happiness.

חיים September 17, 2011 A budding lawyer, our Jonathan likes to arbitrate and have lengthy discussions with his 20 year old brother Alex and with his friends in order to express his opinions. "It is important to state the facts". He enjoys writing voluntarily at leisure instead of writing for homework or a test. He likes to read scary mysteries and has read all of the "Goosebumps" series. He enjoys movies such as comedies, action and adventure movies. Recently he entered an Xbox video creation contest on YouTube.com and won. This past summer he attended JCC Jewish Community Center on the Hudson Day Camp. He participated in all sports but especially liked going on the overnight trips twice a week. They visited Splash Down, Mountain Creek, Playland and even went bowling. He would also like to play the drums. Aesop Rock is his favorite kind of music along with Rap/Hip Hop. Jonathan feels that coming to services and participating whenever he can helps him feel more comfortable on the bimah. He is looking forward to his Bar Mitzvah and the luncheon at the Temple. Afterwards he and his friends will go to the Grand Prix Raceway for the afternoon. No wonder he is excited.

August 20, 2011 Behind that boyish face, there is an assertive young man, who is personable and most friendly. He is mature enough to realize that having a Bar Mitzvah " is a good thing", even though one may have to study hard for it and in my case throughout the summer. "Reading from the Eikev (Torah) is very hard since there are no vowels. Reciting a Haftorah has vowels but you have to learn to pace yourself and chant clearly." At this time Lane is still working on his speech. Rabbi Hammerman said that "Lane is a wonderful greeter. He always goes out of his way to smile and shake your hand. He is very proud of his participation in the synagogue. If his mother is a guide for him, than Lane has an intensive future ahead of him - to be involved in the organized Jewish community." According to Dana, his mother, it is important to do at least one Mitzvah ( good deed) a day. She is proud of Lane because he is trying to make "Tikkun Olam" his goal as well. Our Rabbinic Intern this past summer, Michael Kushnick shared that "my meeting the other day with Lane was very, very good. Lane is very inquisitive and wants to learn more". Lane remembers going to Kadima activities, such as Lake Compounce , last Spring. He enjoyed that experience. He is also interested in baseball along with his older brother Julian and is good at the "Guitar Hero" game. He takes care of his 2 cats named Mario and Luigi. His project is: HAMA (Humans and Animals Mankind Assistance) It involves the rehabilitation of Israeli victims of terrorist attacks. They are paired off together for healing and assistance. Lane has said," I would like to go to Israel, my birthright, in order to visit my home land."
October 22, 2011 Daniel (who is named after his grandfather Donald) will be having his Bar Mitzvah reception at Colonial Terrace. His mother Robin also had her Bat Mitzvah there on June 14th which was Flag Day, that year. For Daniel's Bar Mitzvah his mother has crocheted yarmulkes. Daniel's will have his favorite color yellow on it. As for his Mitzvah Project, Daniel is working on recycling at the Temple. With the help of Barry Plaut, he is building an outside area for recycling bins. Daniel is in 8th grade at the Somers Middle School. Before school starts he attends Band, playing the trumpet (Mondays and Wednesdays) and also attends Chorus (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Daniel has been in the All-County Chorus for 3 years now. He even finds time to help walk and feed his two dogs: Roxy who is 2 years old, (Cairn Terrier) and Spanky who is 1 year old (Maltese). Daniel enjoys drama and music. "He gets lead parts often since he is so comfortable performing on the stage and in the public eye," said his mother. At school he had the part of Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk) in the show "Into the Woods". Last year at Camp Ramah he was Sebastian in "The Little Mermaid". He played Horton in "Seussical the Musical" this past June. Daniel had the lead part of Nathan Detroit in "Guys and Dolls" at Camp Ramah this past summer. The lines and tunes were recited in Hebrew! Daniel has a sister, Michelle, who is eleven years old and a brother, Matthew, who is eight years old. He has kept his friends from Camp Ramah throughout the year. They often get together and, like Daniel, they look forward to the planned Camp Reunions.

Spotlight on New Members Hats Off to the Haitoffs New members bring enthusiasm, large family to TBS by Glenn Sapir
When Barry and Karen Haitoff tied the knot three years ago, they created an assemblage of offspring that may have reminded some of the Brady Bunch. The five children from their previous marriages are college students or recent graduates, but that doesn’t make Barry and Karen empty nesters. “Our 21-month-old daughter Rita is here to keep us busy as parents,” Karen said.
The Hoboken connection to Mahopac and Temple Beth Shalom is an interesting one. “I guess you’d say I am the more observant of the two of us,” Karen said, and apparently her Jewish connection was sparked when she enrolled her son, Cal, in religious school in Hoboken. “The rabbi there, Rabbi Rob Scheinberg, was wonderful. He really turned us on to Judaism, and, in fact, I studied for my adult Bat Mitzvah under him.
In fact, Rita keeps her busy enough for Karen “It turns out that one of Rabbi Hammerman’s to continue her hiatus from her English teaching pomentors was the very same Rabbi Rob Scheinberg, sition at Mahopac High School. and I’m not surprised to see the similarities in the Rita is a student of sorts, just like her steptwo. The rest of the family, all of whom do live at home when they aren’t away at school, are: her son, Cal, 19, who goes to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.; and Barry’s three children, Sidney, 21, who recently graduated from New York University; Jada, 20, who is in the process of selecting and transferring to a new college; and Laurel, 17, who is entering Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., this fall. It is a large family of diverse personalities, but Karen says that there are commonalities. “We’re an athletic family,” she said. “We love doing things outdoors, such as running and hiking. One of our favorite family activities is camping together every year in Worthington State Forest in New Jersey, on the Delaware River.” Barry has lived in the Mahopac home where the family now lives for more than 15 years. Karen lived in Hoboken, N.J., and then Katonah, before she and Barry were married.

Beyond the Walls The summer found Rabbi Hammerman and congregants out and about in the community. Rabbi Hammerman participated in the dedication of the 9/11 Memorial at the Mahopac Fire Dept. He, along with Rabbinic Intern Michael Kushnick, held “Coffee and Conversation” gatherings at the Tazza Café in Somers and the Freight House in Mahopac. In addition there were several Friday evening “Shabbat at the Lake” services followed by dinner in the synagogue. Several Saturday “Shabbat Dinners in the Community” were held in congregants’ homes and backyards. Keep checking the TBS website for more activities “beyond the synagogue walls”.

Online Web Payments for TBS I’ve recently been approached by several congregants about On-Line credit card payments. As you know, we are increasingly making On-Line credit card payment available on the Temple Beth Shalom website. More and more congregants are discovering how much easier it is to make a payment on our website than it is to write a check.

While PayPal is acting as the temple’s secure credit card processor, there is no requirement of having and using a PayPal account to make your payment. In fact, even if you do have a PayPal account and would prefer to use your credit card, that’s fine too. Personally, from the PayPal payment page, I usually use my MasterCard.

The PJ LIBRARY Now at Temple Beth Shalom I would like to introduce a new program here at Temple Beth Shalom, the PJ Library. In the past few weeks, you, hopefully, received a free Jewish children’s book in the mail. I hope that you enjoyed it and, perhaps, passed it on to a Jewish child. That book was a taste of the PJ Library, a program offering free books and music each month to families raising Jewish children. These books are available for children aged six months through eight years who live in Northern Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Books and music are chosen to be ageappropriate for the enrolled children. The PJ Library, an award-winning program, was created by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation with which Temple Beth Shalom is proud to partner in making this meaningful gift available at no cost. To sign up, you can use the link on the Temple Beth Shalom website or go directly to www.pjlibrary.org and click on “Find Your PJ Community” (we are under PJ Communities in NYC – Westchester/Putnam) open the page and follow directions, or call me at 914-584-7111. Also, you should know that the program is open beyond the TBS community. I invite you to share news of this wonderful program with friends and neighbors. For information and to register, visit tbsmahopac.org or call 845-6286133. Hoping to hear from you soon. Jeff Guest

Rachel Kwan’s Trip to Israel I just got back from an amazing one month experience in Israel and I already want to go back. I experienced so many things that I could never dream of before this trip. Just within the first week, we went kayaking in the Jordan River, built rafts, went on water hikes, had a dance on a boat, and became like family. And I am not just saying it. It felt like we had already explored all of Israel but it was only the beginning. We went parasailing, hiking, rappelling, spent a spiritual night under the stars, visited Ethiopian kids, rode camels and swam under waterfalls. When we went to Eilat for two days, everyone got to go water tubing and also banana boating. Both of these sports require each person be placed onto the tube or banana, while being pulled by a speed boat at over 30 miles an hour, and the only thing that is keeping you on is you holding onto the handles. I was in the air for most of the time. Another thing that I was able to do was go parasailing. And it was awesome! I felt like I was actually flying. For the majority of the time I couldn’t even speak because I was having too much fun and smiling. I felt so free and the wind was amazing. We hit the water a few times so it kept us refreshed through the ride. We also went on a lot of hikes. The Jilabun hike was probably my favorite hike. I was told by my friend that it was only a one and a half hour hike, but in the end, it turned to be a five and a half hour hike. These five hours were crazy fun and so beautiful. This hike was pretty hard but so worth it because I saw some of the most beautiful views. Midway through the hike we stopped at a waterfall. It was a surprise, and no one was wearing bathing suits, but most of the people on my bus just went in and started swimming. We had the chance to swim actually under the waterfall into a little cave-like area and just chill, which I did and I am so happy I did. One memorable moment in that water was I was lying back and I just looked up and I realized how stunning nature can be. Wow, it was breathtaking. At the end of the hike, my friend and I spotted an ice-cream truck and I have never appreciated ice-cream like this. Also, Israel has the best ice cream in the world. Even the packaged ice cream is
amazing. On one of our jam-packed days, we were told that we were going to meet with Ethiopian children who just recently moved to Israel but were not settled yet. The kids live in this home all together. They don’t speak English so it was hard for our bus to communicate with them, but luckily I knew enough Hebrew to speak with them. I also translated for a few people. I felt so useful. Some of the girls asked to braid my hair and I was more than happy to let them. They also did an amazing job making braids that I have never even seen before. I asked where they learned how to braid hair and they said they learned on their own and then taught each other. The children were very shy at first but in the end they became comfortable with us. I just want to go back and see them all again. I hope our bus helped make their day more fun because they definitely made my day more fun.

So for anyone who is questioning whether or Israel is not just about all of the amazing and fun things you can do there. Before I went on this not to go to Israel….go! It will be one of the best trip, I was promised that it would bring anyone who decisions in your life. goes on the trip closer to their Jewishness. Visiting the Kotel really got my friends and me to love being Jewish even more than before. Some of my friends, before going, barely had any connection to Judaism but just the first visit to the Kotel made some call home and ask if they could keep Shabbat, light candles, or keep kosher. All in all, our bus went to the Kotel five times and I have to say that the last time was the most memorable time for me. We went on the last day of the trip at 4:00 A.M. We took turns speaking about whatever we wanted to say about Israel and the trip. Being in Israel made connecting to G-d and our Jewish roots much easier because we were walking on the grounds where Judaism first started. We were where the matriarchs were buried, and where our forefathers walked. Also, Shabbat in Israel is very spiritual because almost everyone around you is keeping Shabbat. People are rushing on Friday to go to the market and then all the stores are closed on Shabbat. People you don’t even know say Shabbat Shalom to you in the streets. We prayed and studied. You can’t help but feel how holy Shabbat is. Going to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Israel, was a sad experience but it also made us realize the strength we have as a Jewish people. Even though those that went through the Holocaust went through so many obstacles and hardships, Judaism lives on. This showed us that we can do anything if we stick together. The people who died during the Holocaust will always be in our memories and we will share everything we know about it with our children so it will never be forgotten. The most common comments I heard from my friends on the trip were how this summer was the best summer ever and how we became part of a new family in Israel. I agree with the many who said this. I caught myself telling my mom everyday on the phone “today was the best day ever!” And it was true, everyday was just that awesome.

The Wheels were Turning… and our USY Teens Were on the Move!!! This summer, teenagers from Temple Beth Shalom traveled by bus across the United States heading West! Many historic and exciting cities were visited along the way including Somerset, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, New Orleans, Cleveland, Chicago, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Chattanooga, Memphis, Charlotte, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Hayley Weisman said that "it was an amazing experience, so much fun, an opportunity to visit and see so many different places.” Group tours were provided and, sometimes, small groups also went sightseeing on their own. The "USY on Wheels" trip took place this summer for six and a half weeks and was available for students from 9th to 12th grades. Services were held every day of the week and were a little longer on Shabbat. Every Shabbat a discussion was held, led by the Head Counselor, in order to review where the participants had been and to learn where they would be going the next week. Teens were encouraged to write in a journal, thus recording their experiences, dates and names of places visited. Most teens have already had their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. This summer, however, a girl from Nassau, N.Y. read from the Torah for the first time! David Plaut and Spencer Rubin also participated. The teens on their bus assisted at an AIDS walk fundraiser in San Francisco, supplying water and encouragement
to the participants. On every bus there was a staff member from Israel. Even though much time was spent riding on the bus, all enjoyed time hanging out together. Many could read and speak Hebrew and could recite from the Torah. They learned Israeli songs and a new Hebrew word each day. For example, derech means “way” and acharon means “last.” Some nights were spent at a host family's home and weekends were mainly spent at nice hotels where the pool and hot tub were enjoyed by all. "Something I'll always remember,” says David Plaut, “was our experience at Yellowstone Park. There was a large bison sleeping in the open space not too far away from us. We were a group of about 5 or 6 kids. One pulled out his cell phone and started to take a picture. It was really scary when the bison woke up, growled out loud and charged toward us. Fortunately it stopped just a few feet before us." The majority of participants on our teens’ buses came from the Metropolitan New York area. They will be able to reunite at regional and national USY events. In December, there will be an International USY Convention in Philadelphia. Our teens from TBS are already planning on going. Above all, strong, new friendships were made this summer. Many intend to keep in touch and make plans to visit one another. According to teens who have previously taken advantage of the "USY on Wheels" travel program, their new friendships have
