Issue 8 1 June 2016 Kia Ora, Talofa, Malolele, Kiorana, Greetings from Mrs Judy Jemmett, Acting Principal As we end May we officially enter the start of winter and cold weather. We have had an amazing autumn but with the quick change of season comes the winter ills and chills and all that this encumbers. If your child is sick they are best kept at home as the school’s sick bay does not have the facilities to cater for more than three children at a time. If your child reports to the office sick and the office staff deem that they should be at home please expect a telephone call.

Curriculum Reviews The school has an on-going self-review of curriculum programmes. As part of a curriculum review we survey students, parents and staff. This year we are reviewing our Technology and Art Programmes. Your child will soon come home with a survey for these subject areas that we would very much appreciate you taking time to look at and give us feedback. The school values the feedback we have received in the past. During 2014 we learned from parents that they wanted the school to offer a swimming programme. This was taken into consideration and this year we were able to offer this for all of our Year 7 students.

BOT Elections We are currently in the situation of having an election to choose five candidates from the seven parent nominations received. I trust everyone has received their voting papers and have exercised their democratic right and voted. Voting closes this Friday but a few days grace is given for postal votes to come in. We should know in the middle of next week who the successful candidates are. If you haven’t sent your voting papers in as yet it is not too late! Voting envelopes can be dropped into the office or sent to school with your child or of course posted.

Cross Country We had wonderful weather for our annual Cross Country event that was held at the Northpark Industrial area. It was good to see the large number of parents and family members turn up to watch the five races. Well done to all students who participated and congratulations to the first ten across the line in each gender and year group who get the opportunity to compete against intermediate and middle schools in Canterbury at Halswell Quarry soon.

School Car Park Sorry but our school only has one car park and this is for staff only. We do not allow students to be in our car park for safety reasons so therefore it is not a drop off or pick up area. We will soon have the car park area totally fenced and gated so this will hopefully stop students and might I add visitors to the school from walking through this area.

Dropping off and picking up of students With the alterations to the Walnut Avenue side of the school it now poses several issues. For those of you who have parked along here you will have observed lawn has just been sown so we do not expect anyone to walk across this area. If you park here it means that students are obliged to walk along the cycle area to get to vehicles. I think this is a safety risk at present. I doubt very much whether there will be a good strike of lawn at this time of the year so this will be an issue for some time.

Parents have been observed parking over pedestrian crossings and the school car park entrance to drop students off as well as to pick them up. This practice is very unsafe and I would like to see it stop please or otherwise the school may have to follow this up by taking registration numbers of vehicles who persist in doing this.

Headlice We are currently aware of several students with Headlice infestations. When a parent reports that their child has headlice all students in that particular class are given a letter to advise parents to check their child’s hair and take the necessary action if nits or lice are found. If a teacher suspects a child has head lice or nits they notify the office who check this out and if confirmed notify parents and distribute a letter to every child in the class. There are many methods for eradicating the problem, some of which do not involve costly solutions.
