District 5M3 These really are my last words as your DG. The journey that began several years ago is coming to an end this month. It is also literally my last words as a 5M3 Lion. If the plan District Governor : hits no other snags (yes one came up the day before I wrote this) we will be leaving the Lion David Laechel area at the end of June and taking our retirement in Rochester and District 5M1 – a 900 11th St #4 homecoming of sorts. Westbrook MN 56183 Thank you for allowing Lynda and me to serve and to work with you these past six Res: 507-920-0164 years we have been in this area, as DG and spouse, all the vice offices, Zone Chair and 5m3dgdavidlaechel as a member of the Jeffers Community Lions. I want to thank Lynda, in writing, for @gmail.com taking this journey with me and participating much more than I expected. We will take 1st Vice DG: with us memories of people, clubs, events, and activities. Of course we will be back for Lion Steve Collins next year’s Mid-Winter. 321 Galles Dr This district has added 100+ members –way to go!. Hopefully there will be more by Redwood Falls MN 56283 the end of June, but we have a need to remain over 1250 Lions strong for more than just 507-627-1810 a few weeks. A club is taking shape in Pipestone, and the club in Canby has done a [email protected] dramatic turnaround, but there are still some clubs teetering on the edge. Our Zone 2nd Vice DG: Chairs, Larry, Sue, Denise, Gordon, Alan, Dan and Richard have done a great job Lion Larry Muenchow visiting the clubs assigned to them and helping to “strengthen their pride” in being Lions. 11067 150th St The foundations for a strong District Governor Team have built on what has preceded us, Tracy MN 56175 and I know that DGE Steve and his fellow officers and Cabinet people will build and 507-629-3291 expand on this year of mine. [email protected] Again, thank you, and best of everything to the Lions of 5M3. I will send Cheri our Secretary: new address for the July/August newsletter as the purchase of our (Lynda’s) dream home Lion Donald Kuehl is still not completed. Keep on “Motoring to Success.” Newsletter Email Address: [email protected]

We Serve

Today I'm sitting in training with the US Army at one of the most storied posts in US history -- Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. This fort was the home -- at one time or another -of many great leaders, including General Douglas McArthur and my personal hero, General Dwight D, Eisenhower. "Ike" is a hero of mine because he encompasses the very idea of leadership to me -- courageous, selflessness and wise. We as Lions need to understand and practice good leadership -- not just in our clubs but in our daily lives. Fortunately, we as Lions have numerous opportunities to develop our leadership skills. Lions leadership schools and seminars give members top training. Members can become officers at the local and district levels and work toward goals which further their own development while benefiting Lions. The motto of Lions is "We Serve" but while fulfilling that mandate, members can benefit themselves and their communities by becoming great leaders! I have been in the US Army in some capacity since 1986 and I know I'll never be as great a leader as my hero, General Eisenhower. But I have developed skills which help me everyday to be a better citizen. I challenge every Lion in our district to set a goal to develop some leadership skills during the next few months and apply those skills to developing their individual clubs. Everyone has it it them to be a leader! "Leadership is the art of getting someone to do something you want done because he wants to do it." Dwight D. Eisenhower

Lions of 5M3, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of 5M3 for your support of Special Olympics Minnesota. Your support and volunteering are what make these events possible. Our May 2nd Athletic Competition in Redwood Falls went very well. Over 200 athletes and coaches attended this year. Area athletes participated in many events ranging from running, walking and field events. SOMN Athletes give 100%, 24/7 365 days a year. This is why it is important as Lions members to ensure that this event takes place every year. Thanks to the Windom Lions Club for all their help over the last 4 years and thanks to the Luverne Lions for their help the last 2 years, as they will be working with the Tracy Lions for the next 2 years. Once again thank you 5M3Lions for all you do. Become a fan, become a volunteer. Thanks, Rod Saulsgiver Windom Lions Club 5M3 Special Olympics Project Chair Area 8

This July, 36 youth from 18 countries are coming to MD5M. They'll stay with host families 2 to 6 weeks, with the week of July 18 at Camp Spicer. This is a mobile camp that tours places like our state capital, Can Do Canines and the Children's Hearing Center. Host Families Are Still Needed!

The students enjoy activities that include Valley Fair, the Mall of America and picnics with Lions Clubs. A highlight of the week is an international banquet where the youth prepare a dish from their country and serve it to their host families and the Lions Council of Governors. Would You Say YES this Year?

Clubs will now be placed on suspension IF they don’t pay outstanding balance WITHIN 90 days! NEW POLICY– See below~ 300 W. 22nd Street Oak Brook, IL 60523 April 3, 2015 Dear Officer, The association views club fiscal responsibility as a principal element to encourage membership growth. As a result, the Financial Suspension Policy has been amended as follows: Currently, clubs have 120 days to pay outstanding balances before they are in jeopardy of automatically being placed on suspension. Effective July 1, 2015, clubs will have 90 days. Cancellation will continue to occur after the 28th of the month following suspension if full payment is not received. However, clubs canceled more than twice will be ineligible for reactivation. This amended policy has serious consequences for clubs that have traditionally paid their club balances in excess of 90 days. To prepare for this amendment, we recommend all club officers become familiar with the amended policy and prepare to schedule payments as required. Officers should also prepare to review and update membership by visiting www.lionsclubs.org and consider paying online. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] should you require additional information. We trust all clubs will review their statements regularly, and will send the necessary payments to ensure their active status is protected. Accounts Receivable and Club Account Services 300 W. 22nd Street Oakbrook, IL 60523-8842 Email: [email protected] Phone: 630-203-3820 FAX: 630-706-9108 Suspension is the temporary deferment of the charter, rights, privileges and obligations of a Lions club due to an unpaid balance. Clubs on Suspension shall: (a) Hold meetings to discuss the future of the club and identify the steps needed to regain an active status. 5M3 Can-Do-Canines Chair, Lion Galen Engholm Cell No 507-920-7129 As I finish up another year as your Can-Do-Canines chairperson I want to thank all of you that invited me to your meetings for presentations. What a great time I had visiting with you. Hoping that I have the opportunity to visit with more of you in the coming year. Graduation is over and we now have 16 more recipients with assist dogs. This month I am going to tell you a little more about our Autism Assist Dogs. Since 2007 Can-Do-Canines has trained Autism Assist Dogs to help provide security and peace of mind to families with autistic children. When in public, the child wears a specially designed belt that connects the dog’s pack to the child while an adult handles the dog’s leash. If the child attempts to run (a common behavior for children with autism), the dog becomes a gentle, steady anchor to keep the child safe until the adult can get the situation under control. For many of these children, being out in public places is overly stimulating and causes ‘meltdowns’ due to sensory overload. Families now can go out and enjoy a meal in a restaurant, or go to the mall, with less concern that the child will become over stimulated, meltdown or try to run. Autism Assist Dogs also act as a social buffer, so when people talk to the child about their dog it encourages the child to interact and practice verbal skills. With your generous donations to Can-Do-Canines these assist dogs are provided free of charge. Thank You for the great gift of independence you are providing. Well till we meet again in August Have a great summer Your Can-Do-Canines chair Lion Galen Engholm PS. Lions 100th year will be in 2017, along with that are many things that need to be done to prepare for this exciting event. Go to www.e-district.org/sites/5m3/ For further details and application form to be submitted to DGE Steve Collins. Term expires June 30, 2018. Lion Glen Setterholm Receives Helen Keller Sight Award In 1925 at their International Convention the Lions invited Helen Keller to speak. She spoke eloquently and challenged Lions to become the “Knights of the Blind.” Since then Lions responded to her challenge and have indeed become the “Knights of the Blind.” Minnesota Lions have also responded by establishing several ways to combat blindness. Among these are the Lions Eye Bank, the Cornea Transplant Unit, the Children’s Eye Center, the MAC dealing with Macular Degeneration and the Used Eye Glass Collection Center. Lion Glen has long been active in the effort to collect used Eye Glasses. In fact his name and phone number are still on many of the collection boxes around New Ulm. He has also been a strong supporter of the Sight First Programs of Lions International. Indeed Lion Glen is one of the many “Knights of the Blind.” In recognition of his efforts, The Lions Club of New Ulm were privileged to award Lion Glen Setterholm the Helen Keller Sight Award.
