JULY 4 PARADE AND CELEBRATION July 4 Celebration

Tidal Waves Update

Hello Neighbors and Fabulous 4th of July Volunteers!

The 2014 Tidal Waves swim season is well underway! Thank you to coaches, parents and neighbors for your support and understanding through the first month or so of practice and meets. We have had one of our three home meets, so if you missed it, we have two more in July. We would love to have friends and neighbors come on out to support the team. The remaining meet schedule is: Wednesday, July 2nd vs Twin Hickory (AWAY) Wednesday, July 9th vs Ashcreek (HOME) Wednesday, July 16th vs Hungary Creek (AWAY) Tuesday, July 22nd vs Church Run (HOME)

Summer is here! That means it is time for the Fabulous Fourth of July Celebration, one of Kings Charters most popular annual family events. Decorate yourself and/or your various forms of “wheels” in red, white and blue, grab your American flag and join us at 10:00 AM at Midway Park (Seatoncroft Court) on Friday, July 4th. Our very own Bob Hughes (Scoutmaster Extraordinaire!) will be our Leader of the Pack for the parade again this year! Our friends from the Hanover Sheriff’s Office will be there to escort everyone from Midway Park to the Clubhouse. And the great guys from Chickahominy Fire Department will bring the big red fire truck to add to the festivities. Perennial favorite Jonathan the Juggler will perform around 11:45 AM. Other events for the kids include: The Lambeth Petting Zoo, a Moon Bounce, Face painting and special treats of a Popcorn Machine and SnoCones. But . . . we need volunteers to make this happen! It is a great “Family Volunteer Opportunity”! We just need a half-hour of your time while you are there. Teens and pre-teens love to get creative with face painting. The younger ones can even help by handing out popcorn and SnoCones. Do you have a Boy Scout or Girl Scout that is looking for a service/volunteer project? This would be a great opportunity! I am coordinating the event again this year and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Remember, the early bird gets the worm and the first volunteers get all the “cool” jobs! (Think 4th of July heat and getting to work in the shade at the SnoCone Machine!!) Please contact me to let me (See July 4 On page 3)

National Night Out National Night Out is a nationwide event that promotes police and community crime prevention efforts. In Kings Charter, it has been a tradition to turn on your house lights, lock your doors and head to the pool to spend the evening with your neighbors. Communities throughout Hanover County will join forces with thousands of other communities throughout the country to send a message that we are serious about keeping crime out of our neighborhoods. The National Night Out event is held throughout the country on Tuesday, August 5th and will begin at 7:00 PM at the Lakeview Pool. (See Night Out on page 2)

Without volunteers the event will be cancelled. You can call the Clubhouse, 550-2507, or email Wendi at whboggess@ gmail.com to volunteer. 

Crossroads Park The Crossroads Park at Kings Charter Drive and Charter Crossing now has two new pieces of play equipment for the kids A Bing Boing and an ActivoNecleo have been installed for their enjoyment. This is a nice shady place to take the kids and there is a nice park bench for the parents to sit on and read while everyone enjoys being outdoors. 

Lake Adventure Day At Kings Charter Lake Kings Charter’s first ever Lake Adventure Day was a roaring success! Over 45 KC residents and children arrived for a scenic boat ride around Kings Charter Lake! The purpose of the day was to remind the residents of the importance of the wetlands as a wildlife habitat and to increase their awareness of how to keep the wetlands healthy by not putting damaging things in the lake or leaving trash around. Jim Whitehead prepared a handout about the wetlands and Dave Reppard prepared a fabulous poster with all the different kinds of wildlife our lake supports. He even had a little quiz the kids could take to identify which species they have seen. We look forward to making this an annual event for KC residents! 

KC 5K And Mile Fun Run A Winner For All!

Swim Team from page 1 Please remember that on home meet days, the Lakeview pool will close at 3:00 PM. We will once again have a SILENT AUCTION at the last home meet of the season (July 22nd). We had a fantastic response last year and hope to have even greater participation this year. If you have anything that you would like to donate, please contact Jenny Gormley at [email protected]. Also, please consider coming out that evening to bid – the auction will be set up in the parking lot so you will not even have to go in to the pool if you would prefer to simply shop! Thank you for all of the support and hope to see you poolside for a meet! 

Briefs from page 5 Sprowl were present and established a quorum. Geoff Baldwin was unable to attend. The Board usually meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM and all KC homeowners are encouraged to attend. The first 15 minutes of every meeting is reserved for “Member Voice” when homeowners can ask questions of the Board and /or share ideas or concerns. 

The First Annual 5K and Kid’s 1-Mile Fun Run held on June 7th was a great success! About 100 people signed up to come out and run, jog or walk the 5K. An additional 40 kids dashed their way through the mile-long Fun Run, starting at the Clubhouse with a roundabout at Midway Park around a huge inflatable pumpkin. The event was advertised to and focused primarily upon Kings Charter residents this debut year, with no entry fee for the Kid’s 1-mile Fun Run. The event included professional race timing by Commonwealth Timing, race photos by Anthony Rumley Portrait and Fine Art Photography, water stops, refreshments at the finish, a moon bounce, face painting, vendor booths, music, awards and raffle prizes and medals for all who ran the Fun Run. Congratulations to our 5K male and female age group winners: Kings Charter Fastest Male Chris Leggett – 18:10 Kings Charter Fastest Female Kristin Andrist – 23:22 (See 5KB on page 7)

Update On Ivy Banks Lake Dredging Phase 1 of the Ivy Banks Lake dredge project has been completed and phase 2 is under way. All of the sediment has been removed and has been placed on Charter Field to dry. Harbor Dredge and Dock is currently spreading out the sediment on Charter Field so that it can dry. Once this is complete, they will grade the field and plant new grass seed. The time frame will be dependent on weather conditions this summer. Once new grass has been adequately established, the field will be re-opened for use. We expect that Charter Field will be closed for use through this Fall. 

Citizens Police Academy Offered th

Registration is underway for the 26 session of the Citizens Police Academy, which will take place from September 9 through November 11. The academy will be held at the Sheriff’s Office every Tuesday between the hours of 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and is free of charge. The deadline to apply is July 15. The program is available to Hanover residents, business owners, or employees who are at least 21 years of age. Applicants must be willing to submit to a background check. Class size is limited and applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-accepted basis. Those interested are urged to download an application, which needs to be notarized, at http://tinyurl.com/CPAApplication, or contact Lisa Hancock at (804) 365-6825 for an application or additional information. The academy is designed to give participants an inside look into the law enforcement operations of the Sheriff’s Office in an effort to develop positive and productive relationships with the citizens in our community. The training includes visual presentations, question-and-answer sessions, tours, and a variety of practical exercises. To date, more than 600 citizens have graduated from the academy since it was first offered in 1995. For additional information about this program, please visit our website at: http://www. hanovercounty.gov/Sheriff/ Citizens-Police-Academy 

Community Watch And Social Committee Chairs Needed The official purpose of the Community Watch Committee is “to encourage participation, promote and coordinate activities and meetings of community crime watch programs as sponsored by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Department to benefit all owners and enhance the value of the community.” Community Watch has proven to be an important means of raising awareness of safety issues within the community. Community Watch volunteers are attentive to activity on their streets and cul-de-sacs and are willing to report activity that may be suspicious. The Committee consults with the Sheriff’s Department to promote “best practices” for neighborhood safety. During the year, the Committee organizes the Community Watch Night Out in August and assists in making the street crossings safe on Halloween night, among other contributions to the community. Kings Charter has enjoyed enthusiastic social leadership over the years that has created a calendar of fun and entertaining events for all ages. The Social Committee organizes these events and consults with the KC Board on needs for funding. Past Social Chairpersons have often structured the program so that groups of individuals oversee individual events (St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, etc.) permitting the Chairperson to assume more of a recruiting and coordinating role. We have an immediate need to fill these positions. For more information or to volunteer, please contact the Clubhouse at 550-2507. 

How To Join Kings Charter Facebook Group! If you did not already know, Kings Charter has a Facebook Group! The group is dedicated to the owners and residents of Kings Charter and is designed to provide a safe and secure social networking site for all owners and residents. Any owner or resident who is not currently a member of the Kings Charter Facebook Group can request to be added by sending an email to the Clubhouse at [email protected]. Please include your name and address and indicate if you are an owner (or immediate family member of the owner if it is your permanent address) or if you are a renter. ACC Applications And Signatures Please remember that all ACC applications must obtain approval from the committee. When one of your neighbors asks you to sign their Architectural Control Committee application, they are only notifying you of their intent to make changes. It is up to the ACC to determine if the resident has enough information to proceed with their project. The last day of the month is the last day to submit Architectural Control Committee applications. The committee meets on the second Tuesday of the following month to review submitted applications. If you are applying for a change, all affected residents surrounding your property must sign the application. If you plan on removing trees, you must also apply. If you are building an addition to your home or adding a shed, deck, play set, paver patio or walk way, fence or landscaping, it would be best if you attend the meeting, in the event the committee has any questions. Please call the Clubhouse, 550-2507 if you have any questions. 

How Long Will The Pool Stay Closed For Thunder? The National Lightning Safety Institute recommends the following swimming pool safety procedures: When thunder and/or lightning are first noticed, use the FlashTo-Bang (F-B) method to roughly determine the distance and speed. This technique simply measures the time from sighting lightning to hearing associated thunder. For each five seconds from F-B, lightning is one mile away. Thus, a F-B of 10 = 2 miles; 15 = 3 miles; 20 = 4 miles; etc. At a F-B count of thirty, the pool should be evacuated. Pool activities should remain suspended until 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard. The distance from Strike A to Strike B to Strike C can be some 5-8 miles away. And it can strike much farther away. Why take a chance with lightning? All members and guests will be asked to leave the facility. Teach this safety slogan: "If you can see it, flee it; if you can hear it, clear it."
