From the Pastor, On Wednesday evening of this past week, we held our first of our campaign events. I think that it went very well. We also had a “practice run” on Tuesday evening with the steering committee and another “practice run” on Thursday evening with the Spanish leadership. One theme that seems to have emerged is that there is a lot of misinformation out there in our community about the capital campaign and the projects that we are doing. The program at the events is fairly simple. For each project of the campaign, we explain the problem, explain our solution (and why), give the cost of the project (or close estimate), and name the vendor that we have chosen (and why). The night also includes a lovely video history of our parish and an explanation of the capital campaign process. We try to keep things brief, but also clear and thorough. There is also plenty of time for people to ask questions and express concerns. There is also food at each event, different depending on which event you attend. So please mark your calendars and plan on attending at least one. The list of the remaining events is in the back of the churches.

On a personal note, I will be gone from the evening of February 5th to the evening of February 11th. I will be on my personal silent retreat that week, and pretty much out of contact. En la noche del Miércoles de la semana pasada, celebramos el primero de nuestros eventos de campaña. Creo que estuvo muy bien. También tuvimos una “práctica de ejecución" en la noche del Martes con el comité directivo y otra “práctica de ejecución" el Jueves por la tarde con el equipo de liderazgo de habla hispana. Un tema que parece haber surgido es que hay un montón de desinformación en nuestra comunidad sobre la campaña capital y los proyectos que estamos haciendo. KINDERGARTEN ROUND UP Kindergarten Round-up for the 2017-2018 school year is Thursday, Feb. 23, from 10-6. If your child will be five before Aug. 31, and you would like to enroll them in OLU, they must participate in this academic screening to determine school readiness. Parents will also talk with the principal at that time. Please call the office as soon as possible to schedule a 30-minute appointment. 2017-2018 ENROLLMENT Enrollment for 2017-2018 school year will begin February 13. Enroll before April 1 and pay the early bird enrollment fee of $85. Enrollment fee after April 1 will be $150. Preschool and after school care enrollments (limited spaces) will also take place during this time. Tax Credit and scholarships are available for families who qualify but funds are limited. Contact the school office for more information. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK Catholic Schools Week begins today, January 29. We will kick off the week by students helping out during the 9:30 a.m. today, Sunday, Jan. 29. Following Mass, there will be a small reception in the cafeteria and the book fair will be open. PRESCHOOL TEACHER OPENING Our Lady of Unity School is looking for a full-time certified teacher for our new pre-school opening in August. Remember that all parishioners are expected to attend one of these events. MEMORIAL FOR FR. JESUS OLIVARES Tuesday, January 31 at 6pm at Blessed Sacrament (2215 Parallel Ave.) we will be having a Mass in reminder Fr. Jesus Olivares who was a big part of the our Hispanic Community at OLU. All are invited. Mass will be in Spanish. QUINCEAÑERA RETREAT Next retreat for any girl who plans to celebrate her quinceañera will be April 1 & 2, at Blessed Sacrament. To register your daughter, please stop by your parish office and pick up a registration form and confirm your quinceañera Mass date. The cost for the retreat is $30.00 per girl. We had plenty of food, and plenty of help. Many thanks to all who help out in any way with this Christian act of mercy. RETIRO IMPACTO We invite you to live the next family retreat to be held on 11 and 12 of February at the church of The Good Shepherd, 12800 W. 75th St, Shawnee, KS. This retreat will help us to improve and deepen our role as parents, spouses, and children focusing on God in the midst of the home. Requirement to live the retreat: both parents and children have to be present both days. You do not need to be married. Children of all ages can come.
