Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, January 8th at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For January, it will be the relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton whose feast day is January 4th.

Ambrose-Romanos Singers to Perform On Sunday, January 8th, at 3:00 pm, the professional choir “The Ambrose-Romanos Singers” will lead the Singing of Solemn Second Evening Prayer & Benediction for the solemnity of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ at St. Anthony’s Chapel. The choir will sing a 15-minute pre-service program of baroque music for the feast, followed by sung Evening Prayer. A free will offering will be accepted at the door. Please join us and tell your family and friends to join us for this splendid close of the Christmas season.

Resisting Happiness Is a new book by Matthew Kelly. We all know the things that will make us happy, but we don’t always do them. Why? We’re resistant. With his signature combination of the profound and the practical, New York Times bestselling author Matthew Kelly helps you learn why we sabotage ourselves, feel overwhelmed, set aside our dreams, and lack the courage to simply be ourselves...and how to start choosing happiness again. Resisting Happiness will inspire you to break through resistance so you can become the-best-version-of -yourself and start living with passion and purpose. We are providing copies of this book at the doors of the Church as a gift to our parish family. Read it and share it. It will lead you more deeply to Christ and to the Church.

GOSPEL MEDITATION Mary, The Holy Mother of God "And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." Supernatural communication was nothing new for Mary. The angel Gabriel had already appeared and spoken to her and she agreed to bear God's Son. Her husband Joseph also had a kind of divine intervention in the dream where the angel told him to go ahead and marry her. When she was first pregnant, her cousin Elizabeth had been led by the Holy Spirit to know the secret that Mary was "the mother of my Lord" (Lk 1:43). Now, Jesus has just been born and a crew of earthy shepherds appears at her door confirming a message from heaven: that the Savior has been born. And Mary believed them. She did not doubt their sincerity or the authenticity of their message. She took the words to heart, and meditated upon the meaning of it all. What might strike us as peculiar in all of this is that God chose to speak to Mary in a variety of ways. This holy and immaculate woman, this Mother of God, did not always receive direct communication from on high. Sometimes, God chose to speak to her through other people. Sometimes, he revealed himself to them in order to reveal himself to her. And God does the same with us. It's easy to daydream about having our own personal revelation from God, to hear his voice loud and clear, directing, encouraging, and supporting us in our times of need and confusion. But this isn't the standard pattern of God's operation. Mary was tuned in enough to hear God's voice all around her instead of expecting it to always sound the same. We can imitate this same kind of openness by seeking to discover how God may be speaking to us through the voices of others.

The Pittsburgh Diocese is home to two nationally recognized educational programs for children with special needs: St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech (formerly known as The DePaul Institute). A special collection to benefit these two organizations will be taken the weekend of January 14—15 at all Masses at each parish. St. Anthony School Programs provides children with Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities/ Autism with a Catholic special education in four elementary/intermediate sites, two secondary sites and a college-age program located on the campus of Duquesne University with training sites at Carlow University and the University of Pittsburgh. St. Anthony’s also offers an academic component to the curriculum through Carlow University for qualified post-secondary students. DePaul School for Hearing and Speech provides Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Without the use of sign language, DePaul students learn to listen and speak and successfully transition to their neighborhood schools alongside their peers with typical hearing. Your donation will help St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to further their goals of providing quality educational programs and services to their students. Your support is critical. Your generosity will help these organizations forever improve the lives of their students and families.

January 3rd The Feast of The Most Holy Name of Jesus

Parish Calendar

This feast marks no progress in the development of the Church year. It merely embellishes the occasion just observed when the Child received the Name Jesus as had been foretold by the angel. The feast is meant to impress on us Christians the dignity of the Holy Name. It is a relatively new feast, stemming out of devotional piety. Nevertheless, it is not difficult to find in it some liturgical or ancient Christian dogma. What did a name signify originally? The name should express the nature of a thing. Thus Adam in paradise gave the animals names in accordance with their being. Among the Jews God's name expressed His essence, Yahweh, i.e., I (alone) am who am (and cause all else to be). The Jews had the highest respect for the name of God, a reverence that finds continuation in the Our Father: "Hallowed be Thy Name." Persons who played prominent roles in the history of salvation often received their names from God Himself. Adam — man of the earth; Eve — mother of all the living; Abraham — father of many nations; Peter — the rock. The Savior's precursor was given the name God assigned him. According to divine precedent, then, the name of the Redeemer should not be accidental, of human choosing, but given by God Himself. For His name should express His mission. We read in Sacred Scripture how the angel Gabriel revealed that name to Mary: "You shall call His name Jesus." And to St. Joseph the angel not merely revealed the name but explained its meaning: "You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins." The Messiah should not only be the savior, but should be called Savior. With Jesus, therefore, the name actually tells the purpose of His existence. This is why we must esteem His name as sacred. Whenever we pronounce it, we ought to bow our heads; for the very name reminds us of the greatest favor we have ever received, salvation.
