Early Childhood

Kelly Borders: Orange Early Childhood Coordinator 216-831-4909 or [email protected] Orange Early Childhood is a program of the Orange Community Education & Recreation department, under the auspices of the Orange Board of Education. The center is located in the Pepper Pike Learning Center on the Orange City School campus. The Orange Early Childhood Center is a comprehensive program providing classes and activities for children ages 2-5. The center offers toddler and preschool classes with a variety of scheduling options, including half-day, full-day and extended care (between 7:00am and 6:00pm). The Early Childhood program also offers enrichment classes and a summer camp program.

PRESCHOOL & TODDLER PROGRAM

The Early Childhood program, which is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, has been in operation for nearly forty years. The program offers a high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum that aligns with Ohio’s Early Learning and Development Standards, focusing on Social-Emotional Development, Approaches to Learning, Physical Well-Being and Motor Development, Cognitive Development and General Knowledge and Language and Literacy Development. The toddler and preschool experience is further enhanced with specialized programming including story time with a children’s librarian from the Orange Branch Library, music class with a music specialist from the Beck Center for the Performing Arts and nutrition, wellness and fitness programming through Stretch-N-Grow. In addition, our preschool program boasts a fully-stocked children’s library and offers numerous field trips and special visitors throughout the school year.

2017-2018 REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration for the 2017-2018 School Year opens January 5th (at the Winter Registration Fair) for current parents/Orange School District residents and January 20th for non-residents. A non-refundable $100 registration fee is required at the time of registration. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. Please register early, as spaces are limited. ORANGE EARLY CHILDHOOD TOURS Orange Early Childhood will hold group tours on the evening of January 5th (at the OCER Winter Registration Fair) and also on Friday, January 20th at 10:00am.This is a great opportunity to see our program, meet some of our experienced teachers and to hear more about why our program is great! Registration materials will be available at the Winter Registration Fair for current parents/Orange School District residents and after the group tour on January 20th for non-residents.

PROGRAM OPTIONS Early Preschool for Twos

This program is for children that turn two by June 30th, 2016. The Early Preschool Program is geared to create a foundation for the early education years. Special focus will be placed on learning fundamental concepts, developing social skills and becoming acclimated to a school setting. Children do not need to be potty-trained to enroll in the Early Preschool Program, although this will be worked on throughout the year.

Preschool for Threes This program is for children that turn three by September 30th, 2016. The Preschool Program is geared to build on the foundation set in our Early Preschool Program. The Preschool Program provides hands-on and engaging activities that promote cognitive, social, physical and language development. Children must potty-trained to enroll in the Preschool Program.

Pre-Kindergarten for Fours

This program is for children that turn four by September 30th, 2016. The Pre-Kindergarten Program is geared to extend the foundation set in our Preschool Program. Special focus will be placed on building and enhancing skills in all academic areas and gaining self-control, confidence and independence necessary to be prepared for Kindergarten.

Young Fives

This program is for children that turn five by December 31st, 2016. The Young Fives Program is geared for children that miss the age cut-off for Kindergarten or for children that could benefit from an additional year of skill-building. The Young Fives Program is structured to run just like a typical Kindergarten classroom. This program is a full-day, 5 day per week program.

PARENT & CHILD ENRICHMENT Little Lions Basketball

Players with their parent will learn dribbling, passing, shooting and the fundamentals of basketball in a fun team atmosphere. Each child will receive their own basketball and tshirt. New! Hands on Pottery Studio will teach this fun program which combines ceramics and painting. Each young artist will create their own unique designs on a heart dish using a variety of colors. Teen Music Club Music Club is our after school leadership and music program designed for students in grades 6-8 to learn about responsibility, teamwork, and develop musical skills while working with musically talented Orange High School students. This program gives students the opportunity to receive mentorship in learning instruments and vocals while playing in a band with other students. The goal of this group is to learn to play with other band members and develop a setlist for performances. The Music Club will have opportunities to perform at various campus and OCER events throughout the year, specifically the Orange Rock Off in April. The Music Club is on Friday afternoons starting at 3:00pm. Students must provide own instruments, except for vocalists, pianists, and drummers. ROCK OFF! Teen Band Showcase Auditions Calling all bands and musicians! Rock Off Teen Band Showcase is designed to highlight Orange School District’s talented teens, ages 12-18. This event is also open to bands in surrounding communities; limited space available. Previous participants have been bands, solo artists, instrumental and percussion groups playing original and cover songs in various music genres. To participate in the Rock Off, bands must auditions in person or submit a video audition. Bands will be selected for the showcase based on showmanship, organization, and overall performance. Cartooning 101 with Josh Usmani Cartooning 101 is a studio course for young, aspiring cartoonists, designed to introduce and develop a diverse set of skills. ADULT DAY PROGRAM Anna Maria Adult Day Program at Orange Senior Center Orange Senior Center has partnered with Anna Maria of Aurora to operate the Adult Day Program. The programs offers participants a fun and enriching outing while in a safe, supervised environment. Family members are afforded a break from caregiving responsibilities knowing their loved ones are enjoying themselves and are being well cared for. The program may particularly benefit persons with early memory impairment, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or other physical or mental challenges. It is also perfect for those needing supervised socialization opportunities. The program operates Monday to Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. All swimmers must complete a registration form with emergency contact information prior to the first time swimming each quarter. A parent or guardian must fill this out for swimmers under 18 years of age.

Children ages 4 and younger are free only when accompanied by a paid adult. Only two children ages 4 and under per paying adult allowed. Parents must remain within arms length of all children 4 and under.



The family rate is for parents or guardians and their children who reside in the same household (anyone you can claim on your federal income tax). Extended family, such as cousins and grandchildren, are not considered as part of the family rate. Also, nannies, babysitters, friends and neighbors must be paid for individually.

LEARN TO SWIM LESSONS

Orange’s Learn to Swim program on Saturday mornings is designed for children of all ages and abilities. Groups have low student/instructor ratios so students are encouraged to move at their own pace. If you have questions about your child’s level when registering, please call Sandra at 216-831-8601 ext. 2316. Instructors will move children to the appropriate level on the first day of class. Please note that there are no make-ups for any classes: please check dates and times carefully. The Learn to Swim schedule is subject to change depending upon enrollment.

For ages 1-4. A fun time for parents to go in the water with children! One child per parent, please. If child is not toilet trained, then swim diapers MUST be worn. This class offers water adjustment skills using toys, games and songs. Ages 3 and up. Children will practice putting faces in the water and learning how to float and swim on their own. Class is individualized so that children are encouraged to attempt new skills. Ages 4 and up. Children will increase their ability to do skills on their own, preparing them to learn strokes. Ages 5 and up. Children swim in deep water, learning strokes. Children begin swimming laps, learning and improving strokes. Children will begin perfecting strokes and working on endurance. Children will polish strokes and learn how to put strokes together. In addition, swimmers will also learn fundamentals of diving, fitness swimming and personal water safety. Since each level 6 class is different, children are recommended to take level 6 more than one time until either joining swim team or taking the lifeguarding class.

AQUATICS PROGRAMS Special Needs Learn to Swim The Special Needs Learn to Swim Program is available for those children who need one-on-one lessons. This program is not aquatic therapy; rather it is a learn to swim program. Instructors have experience working with special needs children and have strong swimming backgrounds. Spring Board Diving This Learn to Dive program is designed to teach the safe and proper way to use the diving board. Those enrolling must be able to swim safely in deep water and be comfortable completing a head-first entry off the diving board. This class will teach both front and back takeoff, mid-flight, and feet-first and head-first entry. Divers will get individualized attention and can advance at their own pace. This program will get divers ready to participate for the High School Diving Team. Aqua Exercise

Come in and exercise with friends for fun and fitness! This exercise program is designed to increase flexibility, mobility and strength through an aquatic program targeting strengthening, toning and aerobics. Participants should be comfortable in chest-deep water and be in relatively good health. Participants may purchase an exercise pass or pay a drop in fee daily. Beginning Adult Learn to Swim

For adults who have little to no swimming ability. Small class size provides ample time for practice. Learning is encouraged at an individual pace and will focus on floating, swimming on front and back and treading water. Paddle Board SUP Yoga & Cardio SUPFIT HIIT Are you an adult or high school student who is looking for a new way to work out? This program utilizes wide, stable paddle boards that are tethered and floating in the pool and offers an exciting way to add a playful challenge to your yoga, flexibility and fitness program. Staying balanced on the paddle board takes focus and requires that you engage your core and hips to keep you steady and dry. Although the goal is to stay out of the water, participants should be comfortable entering, swimming and treading in deep water. Participants should wear quick-drying, snug fitting yoga or athletic attire that allows freedom of movement. Open to all levels, beginners welcome. Shaka Fitness owner/instructor Kelly Pierce is certified through Paddlefit and Glide SUP for paddle board instruction, yoga and fitness. Registration for this class will be taken directly through Shaka Fitness: Go to the www.shakafit.com and create a user name and password. Choose a class from the schedule with Orange as the location, pay for your class and select a board. A confirmation email will be sent once registration is complete. Registration for each class opens up 2 weeks before the class. Participants will also need to complete a registration form at the pool on their first day. Do you want to be a lifeguard but are unsure of your swimming ability? Lifeguard Training

This course will certify participants in American Red Cross Lifeguarding for employment. To participate, students must be at least 15 years of age by the last class (proof of age required) and pass swim tests given on the first day (300 swim & retrieval of brick). Attendance at every class is required as is access to a computer for course work outside of class. Students should bring: pen, paper, swimsuit, goggles, towel, and contact case if needed. No refunds after successfully completing the pre-test. Failure of swim test on first day will result in refund minus $35 fee for pre-test. Successful completion includes certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED. SWIM TEAMS Great Lakes Sailfish Swimming Great Lakes Sailfish Swimming is a year-round USA team that strives to inspire and enable swimmers to achieve excellence in the sport of swimming and in life. This team provides developmentally progressive opportunities for its members, with the goal of delivering a safe and positive environment in which to build champions in all aspects of the sport of swimming. New swimmers are invited to come and try out a couple of practices. Coaches will place children in the most appropriate group. Registration is taken on line at www.greatlakessailfish.com. There is a $100 booster fee and a $61 USA swimming fee in addition to monthly payments depending on which group your child is placed in. Residents will get a 5% discount credited to their account. Coaches Adam Katz and Andrea Radel want to bring out the best in your child both in and out of the water. Gills & Tails 1: For swimmers who are new to swim team or are still working on perfecting strokes. Practice will be Monday-Friday from 5:00-6:00pm January 3-March 24. (No Gills on Wednesdays). Tails 2 & Fins 1 & 2: For swimmers who have a strong foundation in swim team and know all strokes, starts and turns. Practice will be Monday-Friday from 6:00-7:30pm January 3-March 24.

Master’s Swim Team

For adults who were competitive swimmers, are training for triathlons, or just want to work out with friends, masters swimming is for you! Masters has varying levels of workouts with a coach on deck to help with strokes. Masters swimmers must register with USMS swimming. Drop in or monthly fees available. Special Needs Swim Team

Each season, Orange Community Education & Recreation develops and operates classes, activities and events designed for preschoolers, youth and teens, adults and senior adults. As one of the most comprehensive community education and recreation departments in Ohio, our professional staff works in tandem with residents, the school district and communities to meet the educational, leisure and recreational needs of all residents. Orange Community Education & Recreation has been recognized both state-wide and nationally for outstanding programming and management practices. This past year, over 12,000 registrations were processed for over 1,200 different program areas, including:

Community Publications

Orange Community Education & Recreation publishes a variety of literature designed to keep residents informed about various events, activities and services available in the community. Regular publications include:

These publications are mailed and distributed throughout the community and are available at each of the program sites and offices along with free literature. Copies of publications can also be obtained by calling 216-8318601 or visit www.orangerec.com.

Community Involvement through Service

The Orange Community Education & Recreation Commission is an advisory council providing support and feedback so that a varied range of recreational and educational activities may be provided to area residents in accordance with the department’s mission and the school district’s mission. Commission at large and governmental representatives act as community liaisons by sharing community feedback with the department’s Director and leadership team and by encouraging the broadest possible involvement of area residents in the department’s programs, projects and services. The Commission meets monthly, usually the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Pepper Pike Learning Center. Residents are encouraged to attend or consider filling periodic representative vacancies and may contact any of the following Commission members with ideas and questions. Also, feel free to contact OCE&R for more information on Commission duties and responsibilities.

FIVE WAYS TO REGISTER! WINTER ACTIVITY REGISTRATION FAIR Thursday, January 5 from 6pm-7:30pm Orange Community Education & Recreation will begin accepting registrations for all classes & events at the Activity Registration Fair at the Pepper Pike Learning Center. This is the first opportunity for Orange School District residents to register for programs and activities.

In Person Registration

Thursday evening, January 5 from 6pm-7:30pm is the first opportunity for Orange School district residents to register for programs and activities. Non-resident registration begins Friday, January 6 and continues for both residents and non-residents throughout the season or until classes are closed. You can register using check (made out to Orange BOE), money order or credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover). All registrations should be completed 48 hours (2 days) prior to the start of class unless noted with a specific deadline.

Online Registration

Beginning Thursday, January 5 at 6:00pm, residents can register online by going to www.orangerec.com and follow the prompts for online registration. Visa, MasterCard and Discover card payments are accepted for online registration. Non-residents may register online beginning Friday, January 6 at 9:00am. Online registration is available until 48 hours (2 days) prior to the start of classes unless noted with a specific deadline.

Mail In Registration

Beginning Friday, January 6 at 9:00am, mail-in registrations, with a check, money order or credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) will be accepted. Use the registration form included on the back inside cover of this brochure or download a registration form at www.orangerec.com. Registrations for anyone under the age of 18 must include emergency medical information.

Email Registration

Beginning Friday, January 6 at 9:00am, email registrations, with a credit card (MasterCard, Visa or Discover) will be accepted. Download the registration form at www.orangerec.com and email registration and payment information to [email protected].

Phone Registration (for Adult Programs)

Beginning Friday, January 6 at 9:00am, phone in registrations for adult programs only will be accepted. Please call 216-831-8601 to use a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover).

Refund Policy Refunds are available for classes and activities (unless otherwise specified) provided that the program coordinator is notified 3 business days prior to the class or activity start date. If the class is filled or cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be given the opportunity to switch to another class, obtain a letter of credit for the same activity area, or obtain a refund. A processing fee of $5 will be charged for all refunds initiated by the customer. A letter of credit will be issued for refunds of $10 or less.

Photographs

Orange Community Education & Recreation may take photos of participants in our programs. We will use these photos in our brochures or for media publicity. By your registration, you grant us permission to use these photos for publicity purposes only.

You are a resident if you live in the Orange School District (Hunting Valley Moreland Hills, Orange, Pepper Pike, Woodmere and portions of Solon, Bedford Heights and Warrensville Heights) AND you pay your taxes to the Orange School District. On Thursday, January 5, Pepper Pike Learning Center’s front doors open at 6:00pm for resident registration. Residents will enter the front doors at 6:00pm and receive a registration number

Non-Resident Registration Begins Friday, January 6 at 9:00am

 

On Friday, January 6, non-residents may begin registering at 9:00am in person, online, by fax or email. Registration for adult classes can also be made by phone.

Residents Registering Another Resident Family Other Than Their Own at the Activity Registration Fair…

 



You must register your own family first by following the guidelines in this brochure. After completing their own registration, residents may obtain a second registration number to register a second resident family and wait until their number is called. You may only register one additional resident family at the Fair.

PLEASE NOTE:

 



All registrants must have a registration number to register at the Fair. If a class becomes full, the department makes every effort to accommodate registrants by opening additional sections of popular classes whenever possible. Therefore registrants are encouraged to sign the class wait list if your desired class is full. Please be patient if registering online. There will be a great deal of online registration activity during the first week of registration.
