Islandora Modules: Installation Process and Social Media Integration Modules add various functions to Islandora. Solution Packs are an example of modules. Islandora can utilize all modules that extend Drupal’s functionality. There are thousands of modules available that can extend your repository’s functions. This documentation will show you how to find what you need, install them, and configure them, using the integration of social media sharing icons as an example. NOTE: In order to perform these functions, you need to have the proper permissions. Not all users will have access to these functions. From the repository home page, click on Modules.

This is the Modules tab.

Overview of Modules tab

1. This is the function we are going to add to your repository. You could, if you wanted, share a link to the Islandora module tab on social networks…(maybe you want to show others what your settings are). 2. ENABLED column: When these boxes are checked, this means that a module is installed and enabled (or active). 3. OPERATIONS section Can access help, change permissions, and configure the module. The Configure menu is important to remember when working with modules. Finding modules 1. To find new modules, click on “Download additional contributed modules to extend Drupal’s functionality.”

2. This takes you to the Drupal Download & Extend home page. https://drupal.org/project/modules

Be sure to limit searches to Modules. Otherwise you will get a lot of other search results. Also, you can search by category (Administration, Commerce/Advertising, Community, Content, etc…). Other search filters are compatibility (to the version you are using), and sort by. There is also the useful New Modules section and Most installed section. Integrating social media sharing 1. To integrate social media sharing, first search for the Service Links module. It is a good idea to, in any search, use the filter by compatibility option. Make sure you have the search limited to modules.

2. Click on Service Links to get the module. This is the service links module page: https://drupal.org/project/service_links.

3. Under downloads, find (scroll down the page) the most recent recommended version and click on the tar.gsz file. This type of file can be directly uploaded into Islandora. NOTE: This screen shot is from Firefox.

4. “Save file” is the default. Make sure it is checked. Then press on OK.

5. Once downloaded, move the file to the appropriate folder (cut and pagest). 6. Once this is done you are now ready to install the module. NOTE: At this point you will want to get back to the repository. When you clicked “Download additional contributed modules to extend Drupal’s functionality” you were taken to the webpage without a new window opening. Use the back button in the browser to get back. 7. We are ready to install Service Links. 8. Click on Install new module.

9. Click on Browse to find your .tar file. Then click open.

10. Then click on Install. If a module is already installed, a message will appear telling you.

11. You are taken to the Update manager screen. You can install another module, enable newly added modules, or access administration pages.

12. Click on Enable newly added modules. This takes you back to Modules. It is recommended that you do a ctrl+F search to find the new modules. Or you can scroll down through them. When you find the one you just installed, make sure the boxes are checked.

13. Then scroll down and click Save configuration at the bottom of the Modules tab.

14. The configurations were saved. You may run cron or check manually, or not.

15. Now you need to configure your new module(s). Find the module you installed. In this case it is Service Links. Click on Configure.

16. Check Search index and Search result. Also check the boxes under Content types and the Tags box.

17. Also check the following boxes:

18. Check Load the CSS file generated by Service Links and then click Save Configuration.

19. Go to Structure, Blocks. This is where you will decide where the social network icons will appear on your page.

20. Click on Blocks.

21. Scroll down Blocks until you find Service links for not-node pages

22. From the drop down menu, select Content.

23. The Service links for not-node pages moves to near the top of Blocks under Content.

24. You can configure the block from here as well. This is where you would change the default text above the social media icons, too, for example, “SHARE”. Now scroll back down and Save Blocks.

25. Now Save block.

26. The configuration is saved. Now go back to your Home page (close out of Structure).

27. The social media sharing icons display.

28. They also appear above the search results:

29. Sharing from this screen will create a link that shares the entire search result list. For example, Facebook:

30. Sent the link to my profile in a private message, this is the result:

31. You can also share individual objects. The icons appear above the object. Click on any to share – you will need to log into any of the social media sites first. Again, this will be a link to the object that gets shared.
