Two Perspectives. Single Focus. Dear Friends and Colleagues: Please join us for the third International Symposium on the Hybrid Approach to Congenital Heart Disease (ISHAC) on June 16 – 18, 2008. We are honored to have keynote addresses from Edward L. Bove, MD, Head of the Section of Cardiac Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System, and Terry D. King, MD, FAPP, FACC, FACCP, Medical Director of Pediatric Services at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana, and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine. In this unique forum you will learn about the latest clinical and research developments from around the world. Indeed, the first two years, faculty and participants came from 33 states, 24 countries, and 5 continents. ISHAC has something for everyone – from tips on starting a hybrid program to follow-up studies on the postinterventional successes, challenges and complications. We are particularly pleased to continue the highly-valued Skills Workshop on June 16 at the University Laboratory Animal Resources Experimental Surgical Suites (ULAR). The outstanding staff at ULAR, coupled with the technically-skilled faculty and unique animal models, makes the Workshop an ISHAC favorite. In addition to podium presentations, seven live cases will be broadcast from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and ULAR (Columbus) and Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). You will actively participate by answering questions using the audience response system, thereby enabling you to know immediately what your colleagues are thinking! In order to foster even greater exchange of ideas, poster sessions have been added to the 2008 conference. Accepted poster presenters will receive a $100 refund on registration. For the abstract submission form, the latest updates on the conference, and/or to register online, please visit our web site at www.hybridsymposium.com. In addition, returning attendees will receive an additional $100 registration discount. So, don’t miss this offer! ISHAC will be held downtown at the Hyatt Regency Columbus, immediately adjacent to the Short North and Arena Districts – the fastest growing community in the Midwest. A cosmopolitan mix of night life and the arts, this community is just outside your hotel room. Social events include a welcome cocktail reception on June 16, and the Gala Barbecue Dinner at the The Party Barn on June 17. This casual event – where jeans and cowboy boots are welcome – will feature dinner, dancing, and free-flowing conversation. We extend our appreciation to the planning committee, ULAR staff, faculty, industry supporters, and everyone who has assisted with this year’s event.

Industry Support Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a relatively common childhood disorder. While new transcatheter and surgical treatments have improved patient outcomes, many challenges remain. The Hybrid approach strives to further enhance clinical results by combining surgical and interventional management strategies, with the goal of diminishing the risks associated with the individual procedures. Additionally, it reduces the cumulative risks associated with multiple interventions. ISHAC showcases pioneering work of distinguished faculty who lecture, participate in panel discussions, and perform seven live case demonstrations from the Hybrid Suites at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and at Rush University Medical Center (Chicago), and University Laboratory Animal Resources Experimental Surgical Suites on the campus of The Ohio State University.

A very special thank you to our supporters.

Platinum

A unique aspect of ISHAC is the optional first day Skills Workshop which provides clinicians with hands-on experience using Hybrid procedures in animal models in a modern cardiovascular research facility. Separate registration is required for the Workshop.

Purpose ISHAC should enable participants to:

AGA Medical Corporation

1. Identify key factors in the design and funding of Hybrid Suites 2. Compare clinical outcomes between Hybrid and traditional approaches 3. Discuss future opportunities and challenges suggested by developments in basic science, translational, and biomedical engineering research

Toshiba Medical Systems

4. Discuss new surgical and interventional approaches for patients with complex CHD 5. Acquire clinical skills with new Hybrid treatments and devices (Skills Workshop only)

Poster Abstracts – New for 2008 In order to foster ongoing dialogue among highly respected colleagues from around the world, ISHAC will feature poster sessions during the Symposium (June 17 and 18). You are invited to submit an abstract on Hybrid therapy for congenital heart disease. The deadline for abstract submission is May 19, 2008. A $100 refund on the registration fee will be given to all accepted poster presenters. For more information about poster abstracts and to download the application, please visit the ISHAC web site at www.hybridsymposium.com.

He is also the Head, Section of Cardiac Surgery; Division Chief, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Division; and Co-Director, Michigan Congenital Heart Center at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, MI. After medical school at Albany Medical College, Dr. Bove pursued surgery and thoracic surgery training at the University of Michigan. He then joined the Hospital for Sick Children in London, England, as a Senior Registrar for additional training in complex congenital heart surgery. In addition to a very busy clinical practice, Dr. Bove serves on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the Editorial Board of The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Bove is considered one of the world’s outstanding pediatric cardiac surgeons and is particularly renowned for his work with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Indeed, over 40 percent of his patients come from outside Michigan, including many countries around the world. Dr. Bove is listed in Who’s Who in Health and Medical Services and the Best Doctors in America.

a world renowned pediatric interventional cardiologist from Monroe, LA, has had a most extraordinary career. Dr. King graduated medical school and completed his internship in Pediatrics at the University of Texas Branch in Galveston, and his residency and fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Duke University. After serving as a major in the US Air Force, Dr. King joined the staff at the Ochsner Clinic where he became chairman of the department in 1973. It was there he met Dr. Noel Mills, a cardiac surgeon, and together they pursued a vision for non-invasive closure of defects in the heart. Working with a machinist from Baton Rouge, Dr. King and Dr. Mills developed and patented the cardiac umbrella for nonsurgical closure of ASD’s and, subsequently, a device for PDA closure. In 1975, Dr. King became the first person to implant and close an ASD in a human being. After receiving many awards and traveling the globe to give talks on this new technology, Dr. King decided to leave Ochnser and move to the rolling hills of West Monroe, LA. He established the NICU, PICU, cardiac cath lab, and congenital cardiac disease program at St. Francis Medical Center and, along the way, he also co-founded the Ronald McDonald House in Monroe. Most recently, Dr. King was honored to receive the first Pioneer Award presented by the Pediatric Interventional Cardiac Symposium in Las Vegas and the first annual Terry King Lectureship in Pediatric Cardiology established by Louisiana State University and Children’s Hospital, New Orleans.

I thought that last year’s meeting was excellent. Probably the most important aspect for most of the delegates was the way the Columbus faculty demonstrated the truly collaborative nature of the Hybrid program. They achieved this in both their didactic role and in their personal contacts with visitors. Their open, inclusive and friendly approach was a great educational experience. The day in the Workshop was outstanding. I am sure that, after that experience, many returned to their own units fired up with enthusiasm to put what they had learned into clinical practice. Finally, it was a lot of fun.

ISHAC has granted us knowledge and opportunities to grow. Much of our learning came from you and ISHAC 2006 and 2007, and we are very grateful for everything you have taught us during those meetings.

Renato and I have been working closely and the outcome of Hybrid Stage I for HLHS has improved. Additionally, we have performed perventricular MVSD device closure with good results. As for fetal interventions, we did four cases so far, two atrial septostomies, one aortic valvuloplasty and one pulmonary valvuloplasty.

Sincerely,

Best,

Renato Assad, MD
