You should try to act naturally within the role. CANDIDATE’S BRIEF You are a Polish/English-speaking bilingual assistant attached to the Council. At the request of the Training Manager you are to be present at a meeting with a Polish-speaking parent who wants to know more about a work based training programme run by the Council for young disabled people. After the introduction by the Training Manager your task will be as follows: Stage 1:

At the Training Manager’s office YOU will invite the parent (played by the Polish Examiner/Interlocutor) speaking in Polish to pose his/her questions and concerns to the Training Manager (played by the English Examiner/Interlocutor). WHILE YOU ARE LISTENING to the 6 questions/concerns, NOTE DOWN the 6 main points. Use page 2 of the examination booklet to do this.

Stage 2:

Relay to the Training Manager (played by the English Examiner/Interlocutor) the 6 questions/concerns told to you in Polish by the parent. The Training Manager will respond to the 6 points one by one. WHILE YOU ARE LISTENING to the Training Manager’s responses and comments made in English, NOTE DOWN the information provided under the 6 points. Use page 3 of the examination booklet to do this.

Stage 3:

Report back the Training Manager’s comments in Polish to the parent. This is the end of the examination.

Ask for clarification or repetition if you are unsure of anything. You will be assessed on the accuracy of your REPORT-BACK SKILLS in English and Polish. You begin each stage in the appropriate language. All stages will be recorded. This task must be completed within 15 - 20 minutes. You may be penalised if you exceed that time limit. POLISH–SPEAKING EXAMINER’S/INTERLOCUTOR’S BRIEF Please read this task brief as well as the candidate’s brief and the brief of the English Examiner/ Interlocutor. You will play the role of a parent. You have come to the Council offices to talk to a Training Manager about a work based training programme which you think might suit your disabled daughter. You have a number of questions and concerns to put to the Training Manager. As your spoken English is poor the Council have provided a bilingual assistant who speaks your language (played by the candidate) to help you communicate with the Training Manager, and who will convey information backwards and forwards during the discussion. You will ALSO assess the candidate's report-back skills in Polish in Stage 3. After the initial introduction through the Training Manager, the candidate will start the dialogue. In Stage 1: Explain that you are a Polish-speaking parent who has requested a meeting with the Training Manager to talk about training opportunities for your daughter. You will list your questions/concerns as shown in the left-hand column of the table on the next page. The candidate is required to listen to them and note down the main points. You must allow time for this. S/he may ask for repetition and/or clarification. However, bearing in mind that Unit 01 must be completed within 15 - 20 minutes, do not allow too much time. When listing your concerns/questions ensure they are articulated separately, so there is no overlap in the candidate’s mind, eg I have a number of concerns – 1, 2, 3 etc. The right-hand column shows what the candidate has to report back in Stage 3 to get a minimum of 4 marks in Section 1 of the marksheet. See Stage 2 grid in English Examiner/Interlocutor material for the full English text. In Stage 2: The candidate will be relaying your 6 concerns to the Training Manager in English. While the Training Manager is responding to the 6 points, the candidate will be writing down the 6 responses made by the Training Manager. 1. Mam córkę, która w przyszłym miesiącu skończy 18 lat. Ma trudności z uczeniem się. W szkole opuszczała dużo zajęć, bo chorowała. Czy kwalifikowałaby się do Państwa programów szkolenia zawodowego?

1. Menedżer(ka) mówi, że programy szkoleniowe są dla młodych ludzi w wieku od 18 do 24 lat. Nie są wymagane żadne konkretne umiejętności czy kwalifikacje. Pańska/Pani córka kwalifikowałaby się na nie, ponieważ następne kursy zaczynają się za 8 tygodni. 2. Większość uczestników to osoby niepełnosprawne. Przyjmujemy jednak trochę młodych ludzi, którzy leczą się z uzależnienia od narkotyków lub którzy są po przejściach, na przykład młodych ludzi, którzy poprzednio byli w ośrodkach opiekuńczych. 3. Oferujemy dwa różne programy. Jeden to szkolenie w zakresie uprawy i sprzedaży warzyw. Drugi to szkolenie gastronomiczne we wszystkich aspektach prowadzenia małej kawiarni w budynkach samorządowych. 4. Ci z uczestników, którzy lubią aktywność fizyczną i pracę na dworze, na przykład kopanie i sadzenie, wybierają szkolenie ogrodnicze. To głównie praca na zewnątrz. Uczestnicy, którzy wolą pracę wewnątrz i kontakt z ludźmi wybierają szkolenie gastronomiczne. 5. Uczestnicy szkolenia gastronomicznego uczą się gotować i obsługiwać klientów. Do tego zaliczamy przyjmowanie zamówień, podawanie posiłków, sprzątanie stolików. Szkolenie obejmuje też posługiwanie się urządzeniami takimi jak zmywarka do naczyń, przygotowanie menu, zamawianie składników i posługiwanie się pieniędzmi. 6. Uczestnicy naszych szkoleń uczęszczają na kursy BHP i higieny. Nasi poprzedni uczestnicy zapisali się na kursy przygotowujące do egzaminów państwowych. Jeden uczestnik dostał stałą pracę i pomaga szkolić innych.

2. Mam obawy co do rodzaju ludzi uczestniczących w tych programach. Nie chciał(a)bym, żeby na przykład córka pracowała z uzależnionymi od narkotyków lub z nieletnimi przestępcami. Jest bardzo ufna. 3. Nie jest dla mnie jasne, na czym polegają wasze programy. Myślałem/am, że chodzi o ogrodnictwo, ale ktoś mi powiedział, że chodzi o szkolenie do pracy w kawiarni.Teraz rozumiem, że gmina prowadzi dwa programy. 4. Czy mógłby/mogłaby Pan(i) poradzić mi, który program szkoleniowy będzie odpowiedni dla mojej córki? Czy uczestnicy szkolenia ogrodniczego pracują na dworze lub w szklarniach? Córka nie lubi się moczyć czy brudzić ani pracować na dworze. 5. Czego konkretnie uczą się uczestnicy szkoleń? Córka już wie, jak ugotować jedno czy dwa podstawowe dania. Zmywa garnki w domu. Czasem jest niezdarna. Ostatnio miała wypadek z ostrym nożem.

6. Córka nie zdobyła żadnych kwalifikacji w szkole. Bardzo chciałaby uzyskać jakieś formalne kwalifikacje. Czy na koniec programu otrzymałaby certyfikat, który by dokumentował, czego się nauczyła? I czy są jakieś perspektywy na zatrudnienie w przyszłości?

The parent of a young person has come to the Council offices to get more information about a work based scheme for young people with a disability. Because the parent has poor English you have asked a bilingual assistant (the candidate) to be present to help you communicate with the parent (played by the Polish Examiner/Interlocutor). As well as playing the role of Training Manager you will ALSO assess the candidate's report-back skills in English at Stage 3. To start off the role play, you will introduce the parent (the Polish Examiner/Interlocutor) to the bilingual assistant (the candidate) and ask the assistant to find out about the parent’s concerns. Candidate’s Stage 1: You will be hearing the parent start by listing his/her questions and concerns. The candidate will be listening to the 6 concerns and writing them down to convey to you in Stage 2. In Stage 2: The candidate will relay to you in English the parent’s 6 concerns. If the candidate hesitates, prompt him/her to tell you about the parent’s concerns. Your task is to assess the candidate's report-back skills. In Stage 3: You will then comment on the 6 questions/concerns one by one so that the candidate can note down the main points and relay these back to the parent. You must allow time for this. However, bearing in mind that Unit 01 must be completed within 15 - 20 minutes, do not allow too much time. S/he may ask for repetition and/or clarification. Parent has daughter who’ll be 18 next month. She has learning disabilities. She missed a lot of school because of illness. Would she be eligible for the Council’s work programmes? 2. Parent is concerned about the type of people on the programmes. Parent wouldn’t want daughter working with any drug addicts or young offenders for example. Daughter is very trusting. 3. Parent is confused about what the programmes offer training for. Thought it was about gardening but someone said it’s about working in a café. Parent now realises* there are 2 programmes. 4. Could Manager advise parent which programme would suit daughter? Do the gardening trainees** work outside or in greenhouses? Daughter doesn’t like getting wet or dirty or outdoor work. 5. What kind of things are the trainees taught to do? Daughter already knows how to cook 1 or 2 basic dishes. She does the washing up at home. She can be clumsy. She had an accident recently with a sharp knife. 6. Daughter didn’t get any qualifications at school. Is keen to gain some qualifications on paper. Would she get a certificate at the end of the programme showing what she’s learned? Also are there any prospects for future employment?

YOUR RESPONSES in English in your role as Training Manager to be relayed back to the parent in Polish by the bilingual assistant (Candidate’s Stage 3) 1. Our training programmes are for young people aged 18 - 24. We don’t ask trainees for any particular skills or qualifications. So she would be eligible as the next courses start in 8 weeks. 2. Most participants have disabilities. However we do accept a few young people recovering from drug problems. Also accepted are those from difficult backgrounds e.g. young people formerly in care. 3. We offer 2 different programmes. One involves growing and selling vegetables. The other – the catering programme – involves training in all aspects of running a small café on Council premises.*** 4. Some trainees who enjoy physical activity and outside work such as digging and planting choose the gardening programme. It’s mostly outdoor work. Trainees who prefer indoor work and meeting people choose the café project. 5. Café trainees learn to cook and are taught general customer care. This includes taking orders, serving meals, clearing tables. Also included are: using equipment, e.g. dishwashers, preparing menus, ordering ingredients and handling money. 6. Trainees attend Health and Safety and Hygiene courses. Previous trainees have enrolled on courses leading to national qualifications****. One café trainee has been given a permanent job helping train others.

Translator’s Notes: *The candidate might use the word “understands” instead of “realises” as they have the same equivalent (“rozumiem”) in this particular context. **The Polish version uses the word “uczestnicy” which can be directly translated as “participants”. I’ve used this word instead of “uczeń” or “praktykant” because it seemed more appropriate to the context and equally generic as the word “trainee” in English. ***The Polish version uses the expression “in buildings of local authorities” so candidates may also use this descriptive equivalent instead. ****The Polish version of the phrase “national qualifications” uses the phrase “egzaminy państwowe” which translates directly as “national exams”. CONTEXT: You are a bilingual assistant attached to the Jobcentre. A Polish-speaking person has come to the Jobcentre with some information about his cousin – a Jobseeker. Because the person speaks and writes poor English he has brought with him a note which contains information about the cousin. You have been asked to provide a sight translation of the note. TEXT TO BE TRANSLATED NOTATKA Mój kuzyn poprosił mnie, żebym przyszedł tutaj, do biura pośrednictwa pracy, w jego imieniu. Od czasu, kiedy stracił pracę, mój kuzyn: •

Adres był zły i powiedziano mu, że ma zadzwonić i dowiedzieć się, jaki jest właściwy adres. Jednak tego samego dnia wieczorem zachorował i od tego czasu leży w łóżku z grypą. Dzisiaj dostał list informujący go, że jego zasiłki zostały wstrzymane, ponieważ nie stawił się na szkolenie. Proszę mu pomóc.

CANDIDATE’S BRIEF: You are a bilingual assistant attached to a hospital. A Polish-speaking friend of a patient at the hospital has a complaint against the hospital. Because the friend writes poor English you have been asked to use some notes that the friend has made about an incident at the hospital where the patient was being treated. Your task is to write out the details in English in the form of a report for your manager. Be as concise as possible, but make sure that you include ALL the information. Ponieważ przyjaciółka była zmęczona i ma problemy z chodzeniem, zostawiłem/am ją, żeby poczekała pod drzewem (deszcz, bez parasolki), a ja poszedłem/poszłam po samochód. Wróciłem/am z samochodem i okazało się, że przyjaciółka się przewróciła – paskudne skaleczenia, krwawienie, roztrzęsiona. Pracownicy szpitala odmówili pomocy w podniesieniu jej – wezwałem/am karetkę. Minęło 35 minut, zanim ta przyjechała z innego miasta, oddalonego o 20 mil. Ja musiałem/am jechać za nią samochodem. Przyjaciółka: zapłakana, mokra, wstrząśnięta, zdezorientowana – ostatecznie opatrzyli ją 3 godziny później w innym szpitalu. Moje zdanie o reakcji szpitala: absurdalne przepisy – szpital pełen lekarzy/pielęgniarek odmawiających pomocy, nieudolnych, nieskorych do pomocy, nieżyczliwych.

CANDIDATE’S BRIEF: You are a bilingual assistant attached to a school. You have been asked by a headmaster to write a note to a Polish-speaking parent. The parent has complained about her child being mugged and having his mobile phone stolen in an underpass (= a tunnel under a main road) which children have to walk through on the way to school. Your task is to write a letter in Polish, using the notes below. Be as concise as possible, but make sure that you include ALL the information. Please note you are not required to provide any address details for your letter, but must ensure you use the appropriate salutations. The letter should be written in complete sentences, without use of bullet points, using the following information: HEADMASTER’S NOTES 1) Very sorry to hear of incident. Not only complaint this term. 2) Police, who were called by the school when child reported incident, identified older pupil responsible for the theft due to good description given by the victim. Phone has been returned, undamaged. 3) Underpass known to be hazardous – used by many pupils, but plans for it include: In the short term: • Better lighting. • An adult supervising underpass at peak times, 8.00 – 9.00 am and 3.30 – 4.30 pm. Possibly use retired school porter who would welcome part time work. In the longer term: • Pressure on council to proceed with plans suggested two years ago for proper footbridge over the road. • Further representations to suggest that children under 13 should all qualify for free bus passes to take the bus right into the school grounds; only pupils living more than 3 miles from school are offered this currently.
