This factsheet gives information on applying for funding to Educational Trust Funds. Please note that the eligibility criteria for applying are often quite specific.

Scottish trusts Aberdeenshire Educational Trust

Grants of £200, to further education students for travel, fees, books, equipment and school trips. Support is also given for starting work or apprenticeships.

Eligibility Schoolchildren and students who, or whose immediate family, are resident in the former county of Aberdeenshire. Household income should not exceed £20,525.

Eligibility Further and higher education students living in, or who have a strong connection to, Dundee. Priority is given to students who do not receive any statutory awards.

Dumfriesshire Educational Trust

East Lothian Educational Trust

One-off grants of £100–£700 for students of any age studying at any level, people in training and people with special educational needs. Includes help towards uniforms, clothing, fees, study/travel abroad, books, equipment, instruments, living expenses, research accommodation and excursions.

Eligibility People in education or training who live in the former county of East Lothian.

Fife Educational Trust

Grants range from £50–£75. Support for students below postgraduate level is generally restricted to travel grants that are part of the course of study but can be awarded for music, drama and the visual arts.

The Caroline Fitzmaurice Trust

Grants of £200–£5,000 to help applicants who show promise of future excellence in their educational, cultural or social fields. Applicants must show how they will contribute to the community where they will eventually settle and must demonstrate that they are trying to raise funds through their own efforts.

Eligibility Young women under 23 years who live in the diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. Applicants must show financial need and evidence of high promise in educational, social or cultural background.

Glasgow Educational and Marshall Trust

Grants of £100–£1,000 for books, course fees, study/ travel abroad, living expenses and instruments for vocational training for people in further/higher education. Mature students may also qualify for help with childcare costs.

Eligibility Residents of the City of Glasgow as defined by the boundaries at 1975. Individuals must have resided within the City of Glasgow for a minimum of five years. Awards are normally only made to people over 18 years of age. Applicants must show evidence of savings and other fundraising activity and are expected to apply for any finance through Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

The Highland Children’s Trust

One-off grants of £50–£500 are available for student hardship funding, school or educational trips, family holidays and educational items for children with special educational needs. Grants are not given for postgraduate study, to pay off debts, or to purchase clothing, footwear, food, furniture or cars.

The Holywood Trust

One-off and recurrent grants of £50–£500 towards college and university expenses, participation at regional national and international sporting and cultural events and to buy musical instruments or sporting equipment,

Huntly Educational Trust 1997

Grants given towards education and training, including vocational courses. Awards can be made to assist with purchase of books, equipment, tools and clothing, and are on average around £200.

Eligibility Primarily people living in the district of Huntly, although applicants from elsewhere in Scotland may be supported if there are remaining funds and at the trustees' discretion.

Kincardineshire Educational Trust

Up to £100 given to schoolchildren for books, equipment, instruments and educational outings. Also for further/ higher education students for books, equipment, instruments, fees, living expenses, student exchanges and educational trips.

Eligibility People who live or are educated in the former county of Kincardine and schoolchildren whose parents live there.

The Logan and Johnstone School Scheme

Applications

One-off grants for books, equipment, instruments and fees. Awards usually range from £200–£700.

The C.K. Marr Educational Trust Scheme

Bursaries, scholarships and educational travel grants to people at college or university. Support towards postgraduate research and assistance to individuals with disability.

Eligibility Students in tertiary education who live in Troon or the Troon electoral wards.

Mathew Trust

One-off grants for fees and study/travel abroad, to college students, undergraduates, vocational and mature students, people starting work, overseas students and people who have special educational needs. Awards are usually up to £400 but greater sums may be awarded.

Maxton Bequest

Grants of £100 for clothing, books, equipment, educational outings in the UK and living expenses for secondary school, further education and university students, trainees and apprentices.

Eligibility People who are resident or have parents who are resident in Crieff or Kirkcaldy and are in need.

The McGlashan Charitable Trust

Grants between £500 and £1,000 for postgraduate courses.

Eligibility Students undertaking postgraduate courses in any subject who are under the age of 30 and either are Scottish-born and studying in/outside Scotland or born elsewhere and enrolled on a degree in Scotland.

Moray and Nairn Educational Trust

Bursaries are available to students (including mature and postgraduate) in Scottish universities and people pursuing education at a Scottish Central Institution or Training College. Financial support can also be given for study/travel overseas and to school pupils for educational outings and visits. Grants are normally one-off and can reach up to £200.

Eligibility For people who, or whose parents have lived in the former combined counties of Moray and Nairn for at least five years and schoolchildren/young people attending Moray and Nairn schools or further education centres. Household earnings must not be over £34,000 a year plus an allowance for dependent children.

Miss Gertrude Muriel Pattullo Advancement Award Scheme

One-off and recurrent grants of £100–£500 to schoolchildren and further/higher education students for books, equipment, instruments, fees, living expenses and educational outings in the UK.

Eligibility Young people aged 16–25 who are physically disabled and residing in Dundee and Angus.

The Morgan Trust

Maintenance grants to pupils according to need, and school scholarships to promising children in day or boarding fee-paying schools. Emergency grants may be available to allow pupils to continue their education in the event of a family crisis. Grants are generally in the range of £200.

Perth and Kinross Educational Trust

Up to £150 for books, fees, living expenses, study or travel abroad.

Eligibility Further and higher education students, mature and postgraduate students and people undertaking apprenticeships, who were born or attended school in Perth and Kinross.

Children of people who were born or educated in the former royal burghs of Dundee, Forfar, Arbroath and Montrose or who have been resident in these burghs for the five years before applying. Grants are not given to anyone with a income of more than £10,000 unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The Princes Trust Development Awards A grant of up to £500 can be made to buy clothes for a job interview, cover fees for a training course, fund childcare costs to attend a college course, buy equipment, materials, tools or pay for travel costs to

Eligibility Young people aged 14-17 who do not have/are not expecting to achieve five GCSEs grades A-C (or equivalent) or 17-25 and unemployed or working fewer than 16 hours a week, or in education fewer than 14 hours a week.

Grants to encourage promising young people in universities or colleges.

Scottish people who wish to do further studies or training to begin a career. Preference is given to postgraduates. No grants are given for courses that lead to a qualification required for entry into a profession such as teaching or a legal profession.

Stirlingshire Educational Trust

Eligibility People who live in or have lived in, Stirlingshire for 5 consecutive years and who are in need.

Applications On a form from the correspondent. Applications must be received by February, May, August and November for consideration on the first Wednesday of the following month.

Grants are awarded to under 21 year olds with either a physical or learning disability or who are socially disadvantaged. Preference is given to young people living in, or connected to, Edinburgh and the Lothians. Orphans, children from a single parent family or individuals with some other family difficulty which is not purely financial can also be supported towards boarding school costs.

The West Lothian Educational Trust

Grants of £100–£300 are given for post-graduate and undergraduate scholarships, supplementary bursaries for university students, grants for student apprentices, travel scholarship to study outwith Scotland, educational excursions for pupils at school or college. Grants are usually restricted to £300 due to limited funds.

One-off grants ranging up to a maximum of £500 for subsistence costs as well as to encourage educational attainment, excellence in sport and/or the arts, and employability.

Eligibility Individuals, regardless of faith or cultural background, who are living in a condition of social or economic deprivation and who wish to gain access to education and increase employability, including British citizens, those granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK and asylum seekers.

Lawrence Atwell’s Charity (Skinners' Company)

Grants of £100–£1,500 towards vocational training below the level of an undergraduate degree, ‘first step’ qualifications that help people become qualified for work, and costs of finding a job.

Eligibility People aged 16-26 who need help with costs of vocational and pre-vocational training or to begin work. Grants are available to UK citizens, refugees with leave to remain in the UK or asylum seekers. Priority is given to those who have limited support from their families, have a disability, varying responsibilities, have fled persecution in their home countries or are ex-offenders or at risk of offending.

Applications Applicants should first complete a short pre-application questionnaire available on the website. Eligible applicants can then proceed with the full on-line application. The Grants Committee meets bi-monthly from July, but emergency grants can also be made.

Futures for Women

Interest free loans of no more than £1,000. Loans are repaid by monthly instalments at a level decided by the Committee. A guarantor must be supplied for the loan with repayment within 3 months of securing employment and full repayment within 2 years. Loans are not available for Electives or Distance Learning courses.

Eligibility Women seeking to improve their career prospects through training and further education.

Applications The application form must be supported by a personal letter (one side of A4) explaining why assistance is needed. Include your full postal address, telephone number and email address. Loans are made only after an interview which is held in central London in March. Write for an application form or download one from the website. It is preferable to have the applications sent by email.

The Vegetarian Charity

One-off and recurrent grants of up to £500 for general educational purposes, including school clothing, school trips, shoes, coats and other essential items for children.

Eligibility Vegetarians and vegans up to 26 years old who are in financial need. Parents over the age of 26 years who are bringing their children up vegetarian can apply on behalf of their children for their specific needs.

The Thomas Wall Trust
