Staff Introducing Rhonda Hughes We have a new Occupational Therapist here at Southeast! Rhonda Hughes moved often when she was a kid. She lived in Raytown, Lee's Summit, and Kansas City. Her family then moved to Warrensburg after sixth grade, where she lived until she graduated high school. Rhonda moved back to Raytown while she went to the Kansas City Art Institute to learn about darkroom procedures with black and white film. Photography was Rhonda’s first love from the age of nine when she was given a polaroid camera for Christmas. She worked for several studios in the Kansas City area while working towards her Masters in Photography through the National Professional Photography Association. Rhonda owned Rhonda's Custom Photography from 1989 to 2009, then decided to go back to school and get a degree to be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. She received that degree in May 2011. Rhonda has two daughters and six grandchildren. Her hobbies include running, bicycling, volunteering, riding motorcycles and almost anything to do with nature. She still loves photography, but Occupational Therapy is her current passion. Rhonda wanted to become an Occupational Therapist because she grew up with a cousin, Jimmy, who was born with Muscular Dystrophy. She was very close to Jimmy and has loved helping people since she was a little girl and now she gets to do it for a living. “I love coming to work at Southeast and being able to work with everyone employed there,” Rhonda says. “When I get to help other people it helps me to grow as a person! I feel blessed to work with all of you and hope to be here a long time.”

Every four years, Special Olympics conducts national summer games in the United States that includes athletes from all 52 US Programs. New Jersey is proud to have been selected as host of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, the Games of Welcome and Acceptance. The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games will showcase athletes competing in several official and demonstration sports. Competitions will be offered in both traditional and Unified Partner® play, bringing together the community to support and play side-by-side with our athletes in what is expected to be the most inclusive games in Special Olympics history. While the Games will highlight competition, special events including Opening and Closing Ceremonies, athlete events and educational programs through the week, will create an experience of a lifetime for all athletes, families and volunteers in attendance . . . leading to a change in understanding and acceptance of persons with intellectual disabilities in communities throughout New Jersey and throughout the United States. Employees of the Month Lamont G. - Lamont likes working on jobs for Zoetis, formerly Pfizer, and processing Holiday Lights in Sheryl’s area. His favorite foods include any kind of beans and liver. When he is not working, Lamont likes to go visit many different places, especially the casinos where he plays the slot machines. He enjoys a wide variety of television shows, but scary movies are definitely his favorite. Lamont would love to take a trip to New York City one day.

2014 USA Special Olympics Games

Jennifer D. - Jennifer works in Theresa’s area and her favorite jobs include packaging Zoetis products and working on any of the Remel jobs. She likes to watch “The Big Bang Theory” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” on television and her favorite movies are Jackie Chan’s films. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys embroidery and making bracelets. Jennifer’s favorite meals are Chinese and Thai food. “Working here is fun and enjoyable,” says Jennifer.

When she is not working, Renae likes to bowl, go shopping and listen to music like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Backstreet Boys and N’Sync. Her favorite TV shows are “iCarly,” “Big Time Rush,” “Drake & Josh,” “Full House,” and “Zoey 101.” Renae’s favorite movies are Air Bud and Beethoven. She also fond of playing board and computer games and having movie night with her roommate, Kelsey.

Terri’s area and his favorite jobs include packaging animal pharmaceuticals for Zoetis and brochures for USA800. He likes to watch “Wheel of Fortune” and baseball on television and his favorite movies star Humphrey Bogart. Skippy likes eating pears, turkey and cheese. Terri, Roger’s supervisor says, “All of Skippy’s co-workers love working with him. He is a pleasure to have in our group; always at work and tries his best at everything!”

We are pleased to congratulate loyal customer, Mid-Continent Public Library, as the 2014 National Medal for Museum and Library Service Award recipient. Mid-Continent Public Library serves residents in Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties in the Kansas L-R Community member Alicia Moore, MCPL Director Steven City metropolitan area. V. Potter, and First Lady Michelle Obama The library system, which turns 50 in 2015, was developed when multiple county and city libraries joined together to provide greater access to the communities they served. Today, the system has 30 branch libraries, 4 automated library locations, the virtual library, and the Midwest Genealogy Center. The theme was “Bright Lights, Big City.” A formal dinner was provided for attendees and their dates. Everyone danced the night away after dinner.

What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational Therapy, often called OT, is the use of treatments to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people with a physical, mental or developmental condition. Occupational therapy is a client-centered practice that places a premium on the progress towards the client’s goals. Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client/family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities, particularly those that are meaningful to the client.

Priscilla Sue S. Retires! Friday, May 2, 2014 After nearly thirty years at Southeast Enterprises, Priscilla Sue S. announced her retirement at the employee meeting on Friday, May 2, 2014. As seen to the right with our Program Director, Carolyn Osborn, she received a special certificate and hugs from everyone. Priscilla is looking forward to resting and relaxing. She says she will miss Southeast and everyone here, but promises to visit from time to time. We will sure miss her!

Two employees from Southeast Enterprises will be representing the state of Missouri at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey.

Tanya J. Tanya has been involved with Special Olympics for 10 years and has been selected to represent Missouri’s team in bowling. She also participates in bocce, floor hockey and athletics. In 2010, Tanya attended the National Games in Nebraska and participated in athletics. Tanya’s hero/idol is her sister and she likes to work jigsaw puzzles in her free time. She currently works at Southeast in Terri’s area. Her favorite SOMO event is bowling, although she enjoys simply participating and winning medals. (Borrowed from www.somo.org)

Tiffany W. Tiffany has been involved with Special Olympics for 20+ years and has been selected to represent Missouri’s team in bowling also. Additionally, she participates in basketball, volleyball, soccer, bowling, floor hockey and track & field. Some of Tiffany’s hobbies are reading, talking to friends and family, and singing in the choir at church. Tiffany’s hero/idol is Derrick Thomas because he was her mentor and part of the reading program. She currently works at Southeast in Theresa’s area. Her favorite moment at a SOMO event is the 2013 State Summer Games because the basketball team came in first place.
