GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogy Data COMmunication. It is the name used for a special text file format developed by the projects and planning division of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This format was developed so that a common standard of communication could exist between the Church and submitters of genealogical data. This has now evolved into the defacto standard for data exchange between most genealogy software programs and systems.

Standard Instructions for Most Family Tree Software: 1. Launch your family tree program and open your genealogy file. 2. In the top-left hand corner of your screen, click the File menu. 3. Select either Export or Save as... 4. Change the Save As Type or Destination drop-down box to GEDCOM or .GED. 5. Select the location where you'd like to save your file.

6. Enter a filename such as sorrells.ged 7. Click Save or Export. 8. Some type of confirmation box will appear stating that your export has succeeded. 9. Click OK. 10.Your file is now ready for upload to e-mail or sites accepting GEDCOM files.

Where do I share? • Rootsweb.com • Family Mailing Lists • Genforum • US Genweb • County Websites • Genealogical or Historical Societies

Don’t change e-mail unless absolutely necessary!

Don’t forget to say thanks to other researchers who share!

Don’t be surprised what you find out about your ancestors. Remember, every family has a secret!
