The design of fans has evolved to meet the ever-increasing demands for higher-efficiency machines, combined with the requirements for lower noise and high availability. In addition, many fans are now being used in safety-related applications, such as smoke control in buildings and underground spaces in the event of a fire. Variable speed is now more common, leading to some additional design problems, and many existing users are revisiting their plant, looking at ways to upgrade the fans. The use of numerical simulation techniques is also becoming an established part of aerodynamic design processes. This event will be a forum for fan and system designers, manufacturers and operators, with the aim of improving our understanding of fans and their system interaction. The conference combines the next in the series of IMechE international conferences on Fan Technology and the CETIAT/CETIM International Symposium on Fan Noise. Additionally, the increasing importance of theoretical methods and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in non-aerospace applications is recognised, with the resulting Fan 2012 International Conference having three separate, but complementary, tracks. Supported by:

INCEEUROPE

CONFERENCE SCOPE This three-day conference will include keynote lectures and technical presentations. The technical presentations will be organised as three parallel sessions, focusing on fan technology, fan noise, plus theoretical methods and computational fluid dynamics. All types of fan, such as those used in industrial processes, HVAC, electronic equipment, household appliances, automotive and traction, fall within the scope of the conference. The exception is that high-speed fans in aeronautical propulsion applications will not be included. For a more detailed breakdown of the topics each track will cover, please visit the event website www.fan2012conference.org

Track One: Industrial Fan Technology

Track Two: Fan Noise

Track Three: Theoretical and Numerical Methods

• Fan design for improved efficiency • Impact of technology on fan design • Compliance with legislation and regulations • Operation and maintenance aspects • Motors and drives • Critical fans for cooling applications • Plant enhancement and upgrading • Fans and system effect

• Fan noise generation mechanisms • Experimental methods for noise source location • Noise prediction and analysis • Design of low-noise fans • Fan noise control by passive and active methods • Optimisation of fan installation to reduce noise • Sound quality applied to fans

• Influence of CFD on impeller aerodynamics • Validation of CFD and CAA computer codes • Three-dimensional CFD methods • Unsteady flows and LES • Optimisation of methods and design • Inverse design

Offers of Papers If you work in this field and think others may be interested in your way of working or the technology being developed, why not share your knowledge and expertise by producing and presenting a paper? The first step is to produce an abstract for your proposed paper. Abstracts of 300 to 400 words in English need to be submitted by 1 September 2011. Please submit abstracts through the conference website: www.fan2012conference.org Selected authors will then be invited to submit draft papers of between 6 and 12 pages in length, with draft papers due no later than 14 November 2011. The conference papers will be written and presented in English. Although all submitted papers will be considered by the Organising Committee, final acceptance will depend upon the Committee’s decision based on the contents of the final manuscript and receipt by 13 February 2012. The presenting author of each paper will be entitled to a reduction in their registration fee. Speakers will not be reimbursed any travel or accommodation expenses. All papers will be published in electronic form on a CD, and in a soft-bound volume of abstracts available to all conference delegates. Authors are expected to attend the conference to present their work. Key Dates to Remember Abstracts due: Thursday 1 September 2011 (Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts well in advance of the deadline and will be notified of acceptance within approximately two weeks of submission) Draft papers due: Monday 14 November 2011 Review completed: Monday 19 December 2011 Final papers due: Monday 13 February 2012 Conference: Wednesday 18 - Friday 20 April 2012

Conference Location Senlis is a French town near Paris, renowned for the gothic Senlis Cathedral and its vast historical monuments. This medieval town has welcomed some of the most famous figures in French history, including Hugh Capet, Louis IX, the Marshall of France, Anne of Kiev and Seraphine de Senlis. The monarchs of the early French dynasties lived here, attracted by the proximity of the Chantilly forest. Senlis is part of the province of l’Oise in the region of Picardie, in northern France, situated between the forests of Chantilly and d’Ermenonville. For the tourist there is a plentitude of churches, the Roman remains, and the nearby Castle of Chantilly to visit all within the beautiful surroundings of Picardie. Downtown Paris is also very accessable being just a 30-40 min drive away.

Conference Venue Fan 2012 conference and exhibition will take place in the Congress Centre of CETIM, situated at Senlis. Convenient for Charles de Gaulle airport in Roissy (Paris) the conference centre is modern, well equipped and conveniently located for those travelling to the conference, both within France and internationally.
