SUNDAY: Today, we celebrate “FATHER’S DAY”. To all Fathers, we extend our sincere best wishes. May St. Joseph, the Patron of Fathers, keep you in his care. Today all Masses are being offered for the intention of all Fathers, and especially those Fathers for whom special prayers were requested on remembrance envelopes.

The second collection today is designated for the Annual Catholic Appeal 2010. To date we have collected $26,997 of our goal of $55,000 goal assigned to our parishioners by the Bishop. MONDAY: During the month of June, the Litany to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be recited during the week after the English Mass in the morning and after the Monday evening Mass. Beauty and the Beast Makes Its Way to Greenpoint Jun 11, 2010 by Jesse Sposato – Greenpoint Gazette

Beauty and the Beast is a traditional fairytale that has been performed on many stages and in many forms. First a written rendition by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Gallon de Villeneuve published in 1740, it has since made its way to the big screen with Jean Cocteau’s French film, La Belle et la Bête in 1946, the big screen again with the popular Disney version in 1991, and then to Broadway as a smash hit musical. There have been many additional renditions throughout the years, and now among the most recent, the St. Stanislaus Kostka Drama Club’s theatrical performance in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. St. Stan’s Drama Club, run by Mrs. Frances Zito and Miss Helen Kazes and consisting of fifth through eighth graders, debuted their version of Beauty and the Beast this past weekend in their school auditorium. Opening night on Friday, June 4 followed shortly by closing night on Saturday, June 5, were both a great success. This year is only the second one for the Drama Club. Miss Kazes, a fifth grade teacher, ran the club solo for a year before Mrs. Zito, a fourth grade teacher, intervened and the two joined forces. After going the first year alone, Miss Kazes wasn’t sure if she could do it again by herself. She says, “But then last year in September, Mrs. Zito approached me and she said, ‘You know, if you want to do Drama Club again, I’ll do it with you.’” Miss Kazes was thrilled. Last year the Drama Club did The King and I, which was wonderfully received. Why Beauty and the Beast this year? Mrs Zito offers, “We needed something that could include a large cast, and the children love to sing. We wanted them [all] to feel like they were truly a part of [the play] even if they weren’t one of the principal cast members.” The students started rehearsing at the start of the year, meeting every Thursday for an hour and a half to two hours until the holiday break in December. After that, they added a Tuesday rehearsal for the principal actors and actresses only and kept Thursday for the whole cast. The Drama Club members span the gamut in age, but when it came time for casting, there was no hierarchy. The parts were assigned according to who was most fit for each role. Belle, Beast and Lefou were played by two sixth graders; Gaston, Mrs. Potts and Lumiere, eighth graders; and Cogsworth was played by a fifth grader. Though there was the occasional microphone or volume issue, the children never faltered with their lines, and they sang the wide array of Beauty and the Beast hits—“Belle,” “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest,” to name a few—clearly and with confidence. Aside from the impressive acting and the vibrant musical numbers, there were also the costumes, which were a huge highlight. Each one colorful, elaborate and extremely detailed, these costumes were clearly made with love. Many were ordered from various costumes shops, and the rest were tailored by Mrs. Zito herself, who sometimes dabbles with art in the classroom but has never taken on a project quite this vast before. These highly crafted and ornate costumes would not have been possible without help from their sponsor ELITE Learning of Brooklyn. Last year the very generous ELITE, who asks only that they get credit in exchange for their help, funded their new stage curtain and sound system, as well. Needless to say, Mrs. Zito and Miss Kazes are unbelievably grateful for their generosity. In addition to ELITE, the Drama Club has gotten a little help from other friends, mainly former students. For a lot of the students that came back to help, it had been five or six years since they had attended St. Stan’s. Miss Kazes adds, “Two of them graduated this morning from high school and came to help tonight. They said, ‘That’s all right, we’ll go out with our families afterwards.’” As a crowd starts to form around Mrs. Zito and Miss Kazes, mostly actors and actresses who want to say thank you or have their picture taken with the women, Miss Kazes says, “We’re just very proud of them. We pulled through!” As she’s saying this, Mrs. Zito adds, “We can’t wait until next year!”

In particular we would like to thank the ushers, the men who collect at Sunday Masses, for their dedication. Many of them, especially those from the Polish Masses stay for multiple Masses to be sure there is sufficient coverage. We realize that it is quite demanding to serve at these Masses therefore we extend to them our thanks. We also thank our lectors, Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers who distribute Holy Communion in church as well as bring Communion to the homebound and to the hospitalized. These services are voluntary, unpaid, flow from the heart and out of love for their parish. We pray in your intention. And, we ENCOURAGE OTHERS, to join in this service to God and our parish. These services are especially needed during the summer. We ask everyone to take an interest in their parish. We extend our thanks to the children—altar servers, choir members and their parents for bringing their children to church. We thank everyone who in anyway care for the good of our parish and help it with their talents and effort. PODZIĘKOWANIE Składamy serdeczne podziękowania wszystkim, którzy w ciągu tego kończącego się roku szkolnego służyli swojej parafii ofiarowując swój czas i poświęcenie. Szczególne podziękowania składamy kolektorom, panom, którzy zbierają składki niedzielne, za ich poświęcenie. Wielu z nich, zwłaszcza na polskich mszach świętych, zostaje na kilka mszy, aby je obsłużyć. Jest to uciążliwe posługa dlatego, wyrażamy im nasze podziękowanie. Dziękujemy także lektorom, Nadzwyczajnym Szafarzom Eucharystii, którzy udzielają komunii świętej w kościele oraz zanoszą ją do chorych w domach i szpitalach. Są to posługi ochotnicze, bezpłatne, płynące z serca i z miłości dla parafii. Modlimy się w Waszej intencji. I ZACHĘCAMY INNYCH, aby włączyli się do posługi Bogu i naszej parafii. Szczególnie będzie ta pomoc potrzebna w okresie letnim. Prosimy wszystkich o zainteresowanie się swoją parafią. Dziękujemy dzieciom - ministrantom, śpiewającym w chórkach oraz ich rodzicom, za przyprowadzanie dzieci do kościoła. Dziękujemy wszystkim, którzy w jakikolwiek sposób dbają o dobro naszej parafii i jej pomagają swoimi talentami i wysiłkiem…

SŁOWO KSIĘDZA PROBOSZCZA... Trzy lata wstecz, ówczesny administrator parafii, Ks. Jan Urbaniak, rozpoczął zbiórkę pieniędzy na wymianę psującego się pieca, który służy do ogrzewania kościoła, budynku oazy i starej szkoły. Zebrano wtedy sumę około 100 tysięcy dolarów, a doliczeniu procentu mamy $106,701. Na pewno wielu ludzi jest zaciekawionych co się dzieje z tymi pieniędzmi. Chciałbym zapewnić, że te pieniądze są złożone na specjalnym koncie bankowym, przeznaczonym tylko i wyłącznie na wydatki związane z naprawą systemu grzewczego. Trzy lata to długi okres, stąd padające z ust parafian pytania - - co, daliśmy pieniądze, i nic się nie dzieje? Dzisiaj mówię - dzieje się i to sporo, dlatego chciałbym krótko przedstawić sytuację „o piecu”. Praktycznie od zimy 2008 roku temat ogrzewania jest poruszany w wielu rozmowach z wieloma osobami. W tym okresie czasu spotkałem się z radą parafialną i radą finansową, aby zasięgnąć ich opinii. Rozmawiałem także indywidualnie ze specjalistami, z hydraulikami oraz parafianami. W tych wszystkich rozmowach wyrażano jednym głosem opinie, iż myśląc o usprawnieniu ogrzewania, powinno się to nieodłącznie wiązać z wzięciem pod uwagę systemu chłodzenia dla budynku kościoła. Jest to o tyle właściwe podejście do rzeczy, że upalne i parne powietrze to nie tylko koszmar dla ludzi, lecz także kondensacja potu i wody, które wnikają w mury kościoła. Po drugie, myśląc o założeniu chłodzenia w przyszłości, trzeba brać pod uwagę koszt wymiany pieców, jak i ewentualny koszt późniejszego zakładania osobno systemu chłodzenia. Pośpiech mógłby niestety przynieść straty. Natomiast możliwość dopasowania obu systemów, przyniosłaby pewne oszczędności. Ta myśl przyniosła owe opóźnienie. Mając na względzie prośbę wielu osób, parafian i nie parafian, o podwójnym systemie, spotykałem się z kilkoma specjalistycznymi firmami, aby zapytać o zdanie fachowców, jakie w ogóle są możliwości. Na 7 firm specjalizujących się w podwójnych systemach, które prosiłem o kontakt, odpowiedziało 5 firm. Było także kilku przedstawicieli firm hydraulicznych. Firmy przedstawiały swoje propozycje. Jednym z pierwszych uderzających spostrzeżeń zawsze było piękno naszego kościoła. Drugie – to jego wielkość i wysokość. Z tych rozmów i propozycji otrzymanych od firm wynikało kilka możliwości – od grzania i chłodzenia wodą, po systemy wiszące na ścianach,

poprzez systemy nawiewowe – wielkie i głośne, jak i niewidoczne a wydajne. Każda firma, oczywiście, jak najlepiej zachwala swój system. I bądź tu mądry, jak wybrać ten odpowiedni dla naszego kościoła! Bo to, co się sprawdza w domu prywatnym lub supermarkecie lub w biurach, może być kompletnym niewypałem w naszym kościele. Ostatnie pół roku to praca bardziej konkretna. Spotykam się z firmą inżynieryjną, która specjalizuje się w projektowaniu systemów grzewczych i chłodzących. Dokonywane są pomiary i obliczenia. Spotykamy się z architektami, którzy podsuwają swoje spostrzeżenia i myśli. Bierzemy pod uwagę nie tylko koszty, ale i możliwości zastosowania ich w budynku. Eliminujemy pewne sprawy. Wiele osób uważa na przykład, że błędem byłoby podłączać nowy piec do istniejącego systemu ogrzewania parowego w kościele - stare rury i kaloryfery mogłyby nie dać zamierzonego efektu. Natomiast wymiana rur systemu parowego lub przejście na system grzania wodą - czyli kompletnie nowe rury, to także spore i kosztowne dzieło. Po wielu konsultacjach z rzeczoznawcami, powoli krystalizuje się wizja nowego systemu. Byłby to najprawdopodobniej system nawiewowy ciepłego lub chłodnego powietrza, i na miarę możliwości ukrytymi kanałami wlotowymi, któryby nie zeszpeciły piękna świątyni ani jej zewnętrza i otoczenia. Ostatnio do naszych rozważań dołączył się także termin „geotermiczny”, czyli używanie wód podziemnych do nagrzewania lub chłodzenia pomieszczeń. Gdyby tę technologię udało się zastosować w naszym kościele (niestety, zależy to od tego, co kryje się we wnętrzu ziemi) to przyniosłoby duże oszczędności energii. Jako, że nie ma planów architektonicznych kościoła, (szukaliśmy ich i w mieście i w diecezji i u nas) a są one bardzo istotnym elementem dla dalszych prac inżynieryjnych, od pewnego czasu, nasz parafianin, architekt, pieczołowicie rozrysowuje plany dolnego i górnego kościoła. FROM THE PASTOR… About 3 years ago, our then administrator of the parish, Fr. Jan Urbaniak, began collecting funds for the replacement of the boiler which heats the church, the Oaza building and the annex building of our school. At the time we collected about $100,000 and now, with interest, there is $106,701. Some of you may be wondering where your donations have gone, as well as the status of this important project. I'm happy to report that the funds collected are in an existing account specifically designated for the purpose of replacing the heating system. The following is an update to our "boiler situation". Since the winter of 2008 the heating system has been the subject of many discussions with many people. During that time, I had meetings with the Parish Pastoral Council and the Parish Finance Committee to get their ideas and opinions. Also, I personally spoke with specialists, plumbers and parishioners. In each of these discussions one thought kept resurfacing, and that is, that while we are investigating the best possible options for the heating system, we should at the same time investigate the possibility of incorporating an air conditioning (cooling) system in the upper church. This as an important issue to consider, not only is the heat and humidity sometimes unbearable during the summer months, but the moisture is also detrimental to the church building and its artwork. With the possibility of adding a cooling system, we must consider the extra costs involved with finding a system compatible with that of the new heating system being installed. Doing the work concurrently would, in the long run, be a significant cost saving to the parish. In response to the requests of many people, parishioners and non-parishioners, about a dual heating/cooling system, I have spoken with a few companies that specialize in dual systems for their professional opinion. Out of the 7 companies contacted for a proposal, 5 responded, among them were representatives of plumbing companies as well. The companies all presented their proposals. The main concerns and observations presented were with regard to the aesthetic beauty of the church and its size and height. From these discussions and proposals, there were several suggestions ranging from heating and cooling with water, to systems that are mounted on the walls, systems that blow air - which are very large and loud, as opposed to systems that are invisible and very efficient. Each company, as is

expected, praised their own systems as being the best. A decision on choosing the best system for our church is being carefully considered, since one that works in a private home, a supermarket or an office, may be completely wrong for our church. During the last six months the work has been more tangible. I met with engineering firms that specialize in heating and cooling systems. Measurements and estimates have been completed. We are meeting with architects who are giving us their observations and thoughts. We are taking into consideration not only costs, but also compatibility of the system with the building. Many believe that it would be a mistake to hook up a new boiler to the existing steam system in the church - old pipes and radiators may result in decreased efficiency. However replacing our existing steam system with a new water system, requiring installation of all new pipes, could be a very expensive proposition. After many consultations with experienced individuals, the vision of a new system is emerging. The proposed system would provide both heating and cooling, with hidden vents wherever possible to maintain the aesthetic beauty of the interior of the church, as well as the exterior and the surrounding area. Finally, the possibility of "geothermal" heating was mentioned, where we would use underground water to heat and cool the building. If this technology could be adapted to our building (unfortunately, this would depend on what is not visible underground), this would be the most energy efficient system. Since there are no architectural drawings of the church to be found (we searched for them here, in the city agencies and the diocese), and since these are essential for further engineering work, a parishioner who is an architect is currently drawing up new plans of the upper and lower church . The various options that will be available to us will be announced in the upcoming weeks. I will keep you informed of our progress as facts become available. Thank you for your patience. Fr.
