What is Hazardous Energy? There are several types of hazardous energy one could encounter while equipment is installed, serviced, repaired, maintained or cleaned. Common hazardous energy sources are: 1. Electrical Energy from batteries, capacitors, static sources and generated electrical power. 2. Mechanical Energy Valves, Turbines, Flywheels, etc. 3. Kinetic Energy in the moving parts of mechanical systems. 4. Potential Energy stored in Pressure vessels, Gas tanks, Hydraulic or Pneumatic systems and springs. 5. Thermal Energy from mechanical work, radiation, chemical reaction or electrical resistance.

Recognizing Hazardous Energy Sources Do you think you are safe from injury due to hazardous energy because you are not exposed to it? You might be surprised to learn that dangers exist from many energy sources.

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT What’s It All About? Preventing accidental or un-authorized startup of machinery and equipment during maintenance or commissioning of plants. Lockout / Tagout is implemented by blocking all hazardous energy sources viz: electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic with LO/TO devices, Padlocks and Tags in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 guidelines. An effective LO/TO program reduces the possibility of injury or death in the workplace. Simply turning off a machine isn’t enough if there’s the potential for someone to turn it on, if there’s potential for a short in the switch to restart power, or potential for a sudden energy burst. Lockouts are the first line of defense for those involved in maintenance, repairing, cleaning, servicing and adjusting machinery. Warning tags supplement the use of locks. Anyone who inspects, services, maintains or adjusts a machine or piece of equipment with moving parts is at risk for injury from hazardous energy.

CHECKLIST Before servicing, inspecting, adjusting or cleaning a machine or piece of equipment with movable parts, following procedures should be implemented: DE-ENERGIZE all sources of hazardous energy. Example: disconnect or shut down engines and motors, de-energize electrical circuits, block fluid flow in hydraulic or pneumatic systems. BLOCK or dissipate stored energy. Examples: discharge capacitors, release or block springs that are under tension or compression vent fluids from pressure vessels, tanks or accumulators - be careful not to vent toxic, flammable or explosive substances into the air. LOCKOUT and TAGOUT all hazardous energy. Examples: Electrical breaker panels, Control valves, etc. DOUBLE-CHECK that all energy sources are de-energized by testing or observing them yourself. INSPECT repair and maintenance work before removing your lock and re- activating the equipment. ALERT co-workers and make sure everyone is clear of danger before re-energizing the system. PARTICIPATE in all Lockout/Tagout training and refresher programs offered by your employer. Learn safety procedures for any new piece of equipment.

An Insight into ARC FLASH So what exactly is an Arc Flash…?? •

Arc Flash is the result of a quick release of energy due to an arcing fault between a phase bus bar and another phase bus bar, neutral or a ground.

•

During an arc fault the air acts as the conductor.

•

Arc faults are generally limited to systems where the bus voltage is in excess of 120 volts.

•

The cause of the short normally burns away during the initial flash and the arc fault is then sustained by the establishment of a highly-conductive plasma. The plasma will conduct as much energy as is available and is only limited by the impedance of the arc.

•

This huge energy discharge burns the bus bars, vaporizing the copper and thus resulting in an explosive volumetric increase, the arc blast, conservatively estimated, as an expansion of 40,000 to 1.

•

This fiery blast is capable of devastating everything in its path, and can create deadly shrapnel as it dissipates.

Some facts about Arc Flash…. •

There are approximately 100 fires a day in the United States, many of them due to electrical Faults.

•

An electrical arc can reach up to 34,000 degrees F (the surface of the sun is about 9,000 degrees F). Hot enough to vaporize metal, melt skin, and turn bone into ash.

•

More then half of the deaths caused by electrocution were people servicing energized equipment less then 600 volts.

•

Just visually witnessing an arc flash can cause temporary or permanent blindness and premature cataracts.

Cost of Electrical Accidents •

Over 55% of the fatalities that occurred in the US Chemical industry in a five year period were attributable to burns,fires and explosions linked to electrical ignition sources.

•

Electrocution is the fourth highest cause of industrial fatalities.

•

There are 30,000 non fatal shock accidents a year and about 1000 that are.
