IDS for Broadcast Traditionally broadcasters have used a collection of separate clocks, tally lamps, production timers and post-it notes to aid in the production of programs. The IDS system is designed to bring all these functions together onto a single display or touchscreen, whilst also displaying dynamic information to better coordinate and organise production workflow. Versatile and limitless display options The dynamic nature of IDS means that a single screen can display a clock with an RSS feed one minute and transform into a fully-fledged production timer the next. The possibilities of what can be displayed are virtually endless and every display on the IDS system can be configured to suit its location and application at any given time.

The IDS System

The IDS System

IDS is an IP based system which uses NTP to accurately synchronise all IDS connected devices without the need for running LTC through your facility, seriously reducing the complexity and cost of your infrastructure.

Content Management

One of the most important functions in Broadcast Environments is time keeping. The IDS system can display clocks, multiple time-zones, up/down timers as well as support offset time recording while keeping all the devices on your network synchronised using either NTP or LTC.

The IDS system integrates seamlessly with your infrastructure. It displays information from and interacts with a wide range of equipment and control systems. At the same time GPIO, IR and DMX based control can be added directly to any IDS system using our IP based I/O expansion devices.

The IDS system can display a wide range of dynamic information alongside (or without) the clocks and timers. The display layouts are based on your own screen designs and can be shown on any connected IDS display interface. Your customized information display can include On-Air lamps, tickers, control interfaces, video streams, URLs, RSS feeds, signage, branded media, etc.

The information that can be displayed on the IDS system is incredibly varied and dynamic. The IDS Content Manager allows you to manage and distribute large volumes of digital content to IDS connected display through a user friendly web interface.

IDS system overview diagram

IDS system overview diagram The IDS system revolves around Integration, Communication and Content Management. The IDS Core collects information which can then be communicated to any of the IDS connected devices. Information gathered by the Core can come from 3rd party integrated devices, be user input through the we based Content Manager or be statically programmed.

The easiest way to understand what is achievable with an IDS system is to look at specific applications and then mix and match to suit your exact requirements. Typical broadcast applications include Studio Clocks, Production Timers, Cue Lamps and Clip Arrivals, but the possibilities are limitless. The IDS system allows your displays to be fully customised to your own house style and requirements - using the intuitive Core Screen Designer – to show a wide range of information such as Tickers, Control Interfaces, Video Streams, URLs, RSS feeds, signage, branded media, etc.

Building Blocks

Building Blocks Building Blocks - Core At the heart of IDS is our configuration software, IDS Core. Designed in-house by our team of dedicated engineers and based on a Linux Kernel, it provides a stable environment on any server, enabling you to work locally and remotely. Step 1

IDS Screen Designer IDS Screen Designer’s intuitive drag-and-drop interface lets you creat and save any number of informative display layouts. Customise clocks and cue lights or create your own control interfaces. Choose from a rich array of design elements, including video feeds, web pages and countdown timers and create a libary of your own image files and logos.

Step 2

IDS Logic Builder IDS Logic Builder takes your screen designs and lets you map their virtual inputs and outputs to real GPI signals, video feeds and time signals, by routing them to physical ports on IDS hardware and other third-party devices. The built-in logic functions, signal manipulation elements and I/O controls provide endless possibilities for logic maps to drive your displays.

Step 3

IDS Connected Devices DS Connected Devices completes the circuit, allowing you to assign logic maps to the IDS Remoras and Touchscreen The beauty of IDS lies in its centralised management - IDS Core controls your entire network, every connected device and the layout of every display.

Final Step

Your finished screen display Time-critical broadcast information, control interfaces and mixed media content are delivered to networked displays and IDS Touchscreen control devices, while our cue lamps, noise level monitors and DMX controllers provide further visual feedback throughout your organisation.

The IDS Core is available in two versions: 1. Core Plus The Core Plus is aimed at medium to large IDS set-ups or any set-up which is content intensive. The Core Plus also includes the IDS Content Manager and the IDS Messenger tools. The Core Plus is a 1U System in a Box with hot swappable supplies and RAID1 storage. Two Core Plus’ can be used together to form a fully redundant system.

2. Core Lite The Core Lite is aimed at smaller set-ups or any set-up which is not content intensive. The Core Lite is a 1U System in a Box.

Building Blocks – I/O Boxes

The Displays and Lamps added to the IDS system makes it come alive and can be used for a wide range of applications. Any number can be added and they simply connect to the IDS systems over IP.

The functionality of any IDS system can be extended by adding IDS I/O boxes. These I/O boxes can add functionality such as GPIO expansion, infra-red device control, network time synchronisation, DMX lighting control, etc.

Building Blocks

Building Blocks – Displays and Lamps

The Remora The Remora can deliver full HD and allows you to turn any display (with an HDMI input) into an IDS controlled display. The remora is completely silent – making it ideal for noise sensitive environment – synchronises to NTP to deliver time-critical content and simply mounts to the back of the display.

The Squid A versatile 1U expansion unit with GPIOs (32 opto-isolated inputs and 32 relay outputs), an LTC interface which connects to the IDS system over IP. For resilience it also boasts hot-swappable redundant power supplies.

The Squidlets There are a total of 6 small form factor squidlets offering a wide range of functionality. All are connected to the IDS system over IP and are powered via PoE.

Touchscreen The TouchScreen is a display as well as a user-friendly interface to the IDS system. The Touchscreen typically sits at the heart of a room and allows dynamic control over any of the connected devices such as displays or I/O boxes.

Lamps For positions where a simple multi-coloured lamp is all that is required we have the IDS lamps which are available in 3 different models: Dual Wall Lamp, Single Table Lamp and Dual Table Lamp. These lamps connect to the IDS system over IP and are powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet).
