Important Information 32-bit Operating Systems support 2015 R1 will be the last release of Edgecam that will provide any form of support for 32-bit Operating Systems.

XP and Server 2003 support for ToolStore Server Edgecam no longer provides any form of support for the ToolStore Server on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

C/C++ - PDI's Retirement C/C++ PDI's support in Edgecam is being phased out, and from the 2018 R1 release in September 2017 will not function. It is recommended that all new applications are developed as .NET plugins. Note: Sentinel RMS network licensing over VPN is not officially supported and using it can result in intermittent connection issues; therefore, it is not recommended. If VPN has to be used, ensuring that static IP addresses are used at each end of the connection may improve the reliability. Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) connections are recommended for Sentinel RMS network licensing.

Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (SP1 required)

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (SP1 required)

Microsoft Windows 8 Professional

Microsoft Windows 8 Enterprise

Microsoft Windows 10 Professional

Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise

When installing: 

We recommend that you update to the latest security key drivers (if a security key is fitted).

You may experience problems with the driver supplied by your graphics card manufacturer - check for the latest driver updates on the web site for your card.

Notes 

Edgecam and Part Modeler will install and run on the 'home' editions of these operating systems. However this is not recommended and we cannot guarantee to fix any Edgecam or Part Modeler issues specifically related to these operating systems.

The Sentinel RMS license server runs as a system service on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 (32-bit and 64bit), Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit), Server 2008 R2 (64-bit), Server 2012 (64-bit) and Windows 7. Sentinel RMS network licenses can be installed on virtual servers provided that they are locked to a Safenet Computer ID USB key. Standalone (single seat) Sentinel RMS licenses cannot be locked against the new keys for use on a virtual server.

It is not recommended to have multiple Edgecam versions installed on the same computer when the user has limited rights or UAC is ON as this may potentially cause problems with Simulator. The Simulator is registered during installation using Administrator Privileges. When the Simulator is run, a check is made to determine whether the correct version is currently registered. If it is not, it must be reregistered which is not possible if the user has limited permissions.

Domain Controllers are not supported for ToolStore Server and Edgecam due to SQL limitations.

Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Vista are no longer supported by Edgecam.

Windows 8 RT is not supported by Edgecam.

Installation Guide Edgecam 2016 R1

To install SQL Data folder in a different location If an Edgecam installation has previously been installed on the server, an Edgecam SQL configuration will already exist in the default location and will need to be uninstalled before following this procedure. It is possible to change the location for the SQL folder that is used to store the data (SQL database). To do this, the Edgecam SQL script will need to be edited. Copy the script file called EcSqlExpress.ini from the :\Edgecam\sql folder, save it to “C:\Temp” and then edit it, adding the following lines: ACTION=Install INSTANCEDIR="D:\NewFolder" where the path inside the quotes should be the full path to the location where SQL is to be installed. You can now install Edgecam SQL from a command window using the following command line: :\Edgecam\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe /ConfigurationFile="C:\temp\EcSqlExpress.ini" Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Edgecam SQL. Once this has completed run setup.exe from the :\SQL Server folder to install the ToolStore on the server.

Installation Guide Edgecam 2016 R1

Installing Edgecam without SQL Express Installing Edgecam without SQL Express should only be done by corporate users with experience of configuring SQL on the company network. Edgecam can be installed without SQL Express and the ECSQLEXPRESS instance. This means users who access the ToolStore database from a network server no longer need to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on the local computer. To install Edgecam without SQL Express, choose a Custom installation (rather than 'Typical') when installing Edgecam. Select the ToolStore option and uncheck 'SQL Server Express Instance'.

Note 

To allow the client PC to communicate with the server database and ToolStore Administrator to 'find' the database, your IT department needs to manually install Microsoft SQL Server Native Client on each client PC.

Only available to Domain users as Workgroup users cannot authenticate the server.

ToolStore Administrator will pause for a few seconds, then recognises there is no ECSQLEXPRESS installed and issue an error message. Ignore the message and go to the "Activate ToolStore database" dialog.

This is not a workaround for SQL installation problems.

Evaluating Edgecam Functionality An Evaluation license provides you with a fully functional Edgecam system for a limited time period. This allows you to test Edgecam in your own working environment. Every time Edgecam is started, the number of remaining days is shown on the Edgecam splash screen. The number of days remaining is also displayed using Help menu ► About Edgecam. Evaluation licenses can be revoked, meaning that they can be removed from the PC for installation on another one. Note that the number of days remaining will be the number of days left when the license is revoked from the original PC. Evaluation network licenses can also be commuted.

Timed Licenses A timed license provides you with a fully functional Edgecam system for a limited period. A timed license may be issued to a new customer prior to a permanent license or when transferring from one license type to another. Timed licenses can be revoked, meaning that they can be removed from the PC for installation on another one. Note that the number of days remaining will be the number of days left when the license is revoked from the original PC. Timed network licenses can also be commuted.

Licensing your Edgecam Installation To run Edgecam, you need to license your software. 

All newer Edgecam installations use Sentinel RMS™ licensing. For detailed information on installing and activating standalone and network license, please refer to the Licensing Guide.

For information about legacy (NetHASP and NetSentinel) hardware keys, please refer to the Legacy Licensing Guide.

Edgecam License Types and Expiry Dates There are three types of software license:

Fixed Term These are the default license type and allow software versions released prior to the Update Expiry Date in the license to be run. If your license is of the Fixed Term type, an Update Expiry month and year, for example, November 2013 will be displayed. In this example, any new software versions released in December 2013 or later will not run with the license file. If the expiry date of the license is then extended to November 2014, any Edgecam releases issued up to that date can be run. The expiry date is extended when the maintenance plan is renewed, which is typically every 12 months.

Timed Timed licenses run for a fixed number of days from the time that the license file is generated and, typically, these are used in evaluation and temporary licenses. Once the timed period has expired, it may be extended or the license type changed to Fixed Term.

Free to use Some Edgecam licenses, for example, Advanced Customisation (Product Code ENPCI-J) can be added to a license configuration free of charge. However, they will only be available in the software while the main Fixed Term license has an active Support and Maintenance contract. In the case of the Advanced Customisation license, any custom macros or dialog masks created by or for the customer will not run if the Support and Maintenance contract has lapsed.

Running Edgecam You can run Edgecam without Administrator rights. To install the software, you must be logged on with Administrator rights. To run Edgecam 1.

Make sure that the licensing module CLS is running (this should have happened automatically – see below for further information).

Using Edgecam in Homework Mode Homework Mode allows industrial users of a licensed product to emulate the Homework license. This can be useful when training for example, to load tutorial part files that contain solid CAD models that you do not have an industrial license for. The part files created in Homework Mode are not compatible with licensed Edgecam and you cannot generate NC code. If no license is installed, the Homework Mode option is not displayed in the CLS menu.

To switch to Homework Mode 

From the CLS menu, select Homework Mode.

Installation Guide Edgecam 2016 R1

When starting Edgecam with a Homework License, a message will be displayed (see below). Click OK to continue.

Note If you have network licenses configured and switch on Homework Mode, the network licenses will still be taken out. To use Homework Mode without consuming the network licenses, use the Configure Network Licenses option to return the licenses to the network server first.

Switching back to Fully Licensed Mode To change back to fully licensed mode, close Edgecam and repeat the step above - clicking 'Homework Mode' again disables it, and Edgecam will next start in the normal licensed mode.

About the Client License Server CLS (Client License Server) checks the available licenses when Edgecam opens. When running, the CLS icon is displayed in the Windows Notification Area.

CLS is in Windows Start ► All Programs ► Startup ► CLS , so it automatically starts when logging in to Windows. If CLS is not running you will not be able to start any Edgecam applications; start CLS manually by clicking it in Startup. Also see Troubleshooting CLS.

Installation Guide Edgecam 2016 R1

Right-click the CLS icon in the Notification Area to display a menu of options:

Some options (such as Program Security Key, Set License Server Name, License Manager and Configure Network Licenses) start utilities; click the utility's help button for information. The License Manager is used to select a license server and to install network and standalone license files. For more information on working with the License Manager, please refer to the Licensing Guide. Click to check Ignore Network Security Key if you have a local security key, and you want this to be used rather than the network key (this is useful for mobile users connecting their laptops to different networks). The next time Edgecam starts it will use the local security key. When working with legacy hardware keys, you use the Select Network Key dialog to select the server that the client PC obtains its licenses from. Checking Homework Mode allows industrial users of a licensed product to emulate the Homework license. This can be useful when training for example, to load tutorial part files that contain solid CAD models that you do not have an industrial license for. The next time Edgecam starts it will be in Homework Mode. CLS is installed automatically when you install Edgecam or Part Modeler. If the automatic installation has failed, manually start the CLS installation by running the setup.exe program in the \CLS folder of the Edgecam DVD. By default, CLS is installed into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Vero Software\\cls.

Restoring Factory Settings Edgecam offers a utility that resets the user interface to the default settings and deletes any temporary or cached files that may be causing the software to be unstable.

To restore factory settings 1.

On the Edgecam launcher, click the Settings button.

Troubleshooting CLS 1. Client License Server is not Running You might see the error message "Client License Server is not running". This can happen for different reasons:

CLS is not running/has not been started To fix this, click Windows Start ► All Programs ► Startup ► CLS

Installation Guide Edgecam 2016 R1

CLS has not been installed CLS is installed automatically when you install the Edgecam software. If the automatic installation has failed, manually start the CLS installation by running the setup.exe program in the \CLS folder of the Edgecam DVD. To check, whether CLS is installed on your machine, click Windows Start ► Settings ► Control Panel ► Add/Remove Programs and look for Vero CLS .

2. CLS is Already Executing You might not see CLS in the Windows Notification Area and go to start it manually. You see the error message 'Client License Server is already executing'. This can happen if a previous instance of CLS was not shut down completely and is still running in the background. To fix this, shut down the PC and start it again. CLS will automatically start when logging in to Windows.

No Security Key Found Only applies to network license installations that use a key The 'No security key can be found on the network' message may be displayed for one of several reasons: 

The network license server and/or license file has not been installed.

The security key is not attached to the license server.

There is a fault with the USB port on the license server, or the port is disabled.

The server's firewall is blocking the license requests (try exempting the service in the Firewall settings).

Removing the Network Security Key If the security key has been removed from the license server, and a user tries to access an Edgecam application, this dialog will be displayed:

If the security key is removed from the license server while an Edgecam application is running, the following dialog will be displayed after approximately three minutes.

Installation Guide Edgecam 2016 R1

If you replace the security key and click Retry Connection, then you can continue. Alternatively you can close the application by clicking Close Application.

The dialog text may vary from the text shown here, depending on the actual problem.

Detecting and Selecting Network Keys Once the server has been set up you can configure client PCs to obtain their licenses from it. To do this, you use CLS menu ►Select Network Key.

Select Network Key is a useful diagnostic tool for testing whether a client PC can detect an Edgecam network key. The utility lists the first of each type of Edgecam network key (including a Sentinel RMS™ keyless 'key') that it finds. Now select the key that you wish to connect to.

You now go on to select your licenses.

ToolStore Administrator Error During Installation When installing Edgecam, you might see the error message "Creation of the ToolStore Workgroup user account failed: The server principal 'toolstore_user' already exists". This happens for the following reason: During installation, Edgecam creates an SQL user called 'toolstore_user' which is used by ToolStore Administrator if SQL Authentication has been chosen. This user is created automatically by the Edgecam installation; there is no need for you or your IT department to create or edit it. If the SQL user has been created or edited manually in an installation, the next Edgecam installation will recognise this and display the above error message. You should contact your IT department to verify that the SQL user works correctly (e.g. ToolStore Administrator works with SQL Authentication). If necessary, delete the SQL user and reinstall Edgecam.

My PC cannot Access the Vero Server for License and Software Updates Your PC may have restricted Internet access and access to the Vero servers may be blocked. If you have a proxy server setup you can configure it to allow access to the Vero servers by using the Tools menu ► Internet Proxy Setup option in License Manager (CLS menu).

License Manager Does Not List Network License Server Having used the Search Network option from the Server menu in License Manager (CLS menu) the network license server that you want to connect to is not listed. Check that the UDP Port 5093 (reserved by Sentinel RMS) is not blocked by your network router.

Installing Edgecam Can I update my existing installation of Edgecam? No. The latest version of Edgecam must be installed as a new installation. Edgecam offers a file migration tool that takes you through the process of copying existing data from an older installation into the new installation.

Can I have more than one installation of Edgecam on my PC? Yes, multiple installations (different versions) of Edgecam can be installed on the same PC.
