Innovating for growth 2014 was an important year: 20 years since the birth of our company, Mac Autoadesivi. Mac Autoadesivi is an industrial reality that has been able to embark on a growth and modernization path, responding to the challenges of domestic and international reference markets. From handicraft enterprise we became a strongly structured company, able to satisfy requests and to accomplish the European Market standards, which is particularly evolved and demanding. We are proud to have crossed the 20 years finish line and in order to underline this team spirit we wanted all our company distinctive features and all marketing supports as catalogues, logos, web site, to be renewed. Our current and future efforts are to continue in supporting our company market position thanks to our productive quality, our excellence in customer service and our proactive dialogue with all our stakeholders. Our technological choice In 1994 the choice to get into the acrylic water-based sector was surely moved by less expensive investments to initialize the production system. However this technology was doubtless more risky. In fact, productively speaking, it was less flexible: only few suppliers could provide raw materials, the know-how was still limited and the European market was steered by other two already widely spread and affirmed technologies ( Hot Melt and natural rubber resin/Solvent). In 1998 buying and starting the second coating line wasn’t just an important investment but also a challenge, whose aim was to spread and affirm a high performance and more ecofriendly product than other technologies were.

About us MAC was born in 1994 as vertical integration of Fralex srl - a company specialised in the production and sale of adhesive tapes for home, school and office. Installing its first coating line did not only mean the improvement of quality standardisation and the reduction of supply time of jumbo rolls for Fralex’ cutting machines, it also brought MAC into the packaging world. MAC reaffirmed its role in 1998 with the purchase of its second coating line, gaining, this way, a crucial role in the European market. Hereinafter, thanks to its dynamism and targeted investments - as the production of printable tapes and the development of its Quality Control Research and Development Laboratory - MAC made a name of itself and became an ideal partner for those who demanded quality and flexibility from their suppliers. In the last few years MAC has carried on further crucial

investments, i.e. the installation of its third coating line, of its fourth cutting line and the automation of every step of the production chain. However MAC made important investments not only for its physical capital, but also for its human capital, promoting training programs about essential issues like quality, environment and safety for all its collaborators. Thanks to all these efforts in 2012 MAC obtained the ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications (quality and environment management systems). MAC obtained also the OHSAS 18001 certification (safety management system) in July 2013 and the EMAS registration in May 2014.

Thanks to the complete synergy with its partners MAC Autoadesivi found, during the years, a solid position on the market; it first started from those territories that demanded high quality and care for the environment and then broadened out in whole Europe. Mac also committed itself to project and develop new alternative products (HMA and SA line pg. 24). Tomorrow’s challenge will be to produce many more adhesive tapes that today involve different technologies.

MAC is nowadays one of the most important producers of adhesive tapes for packaging and printable purposes in Europe, and this thanks to the constant attention to its customers’ requests, to its flexibility, and to the high quality of its products.

LCA Thanks to the help of its environmental consultants and through the implementation of its Environmental Management System , MAC Autoadesivi carried a test on the life cycle of its standard tape (code 4030) comparing it to standard products that use different technologies. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an objective calculation means used to evaluate and quantify the energetic and environmental loads and the potential impacts a product can have, starting from its raw materials extraction till the end of its life. Even if the study is not certified according to UNI EN ISO 14040 data are directly collected in the

production and certified by a third body (Bureau Veritas) which makes the study more than reliable. The main goal of this study wasn’t just a general evaluation of the LCA of PPL acrylic water-based tapes produced by MAC Autoadesivi, but also a specific comparison between the impact of the technology we’ve always invested in and other technologies. In order to do that we’ve studied our polluting indices and we’ve compared them to those of other technologies using the data provided by ENEA , the Italian agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development.

PRINTABLE TAPES Studied in the formulation and in the packaging application to satisfy printers necessities. They are all composed by PP film and acrylic water based adhesive, free of solvent and damaging substances. They can be printed with “Corona treatment” or “Primer & Release”, the sizes can be customized following customers request. MAC Autoadesivi proposes its printable tapes in two different packaging forms: Standard Pallet and Carton Pallet. For printing instruction see pg. 32, 33.

Composed by loose rolls one above the other on many plans, separated by a layer of film, to avoid that they stick to each other. They are wrapped with extensible film and packed in one big carton. This reduce the quantity of used paper and allows a quicker taking of the rolls.

We can’t specify the exact level of the Corona treatment for every situation as the best level can change according to the machinery used and the environmental conditions. Normally the best results are obtained with treatment values between 36 and 38 dyne/cm (measured immediately after the treatment).

Before the ink apply a substance that assures its anchorage (Primer). Before the rewinding apply an anti-adhesive component (Release agent).

SUGGESTION FOR THE CORONA TREATMENT

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND CAUSES

• Distance between the discharge station and the rubber roller must be minimal: about the same thickness of a paper sheet • Always clean the treater at the end of the day
