The school has a business and administrative section of Malay nationals, which is headed by an expatriate. These sections provide an invaluable service, having regular contact with the Malaysian government and local authorities to ensure that we can operate effectively. World Education World ClassClass Education The British International School of Kuala Lumpur is a selective school and all children need to take an assessment before entry in Mathematics and English. All children are expected to be able to speak English and for those whose proficiency is not of the required level, and have no alternative but to attend BISKL, an intensive programme of EAL/ESL. School policy is that only 20% of any class can be EAL/ESL. We are seeking to recruit two Music Interns with recent experience of education in the UK and who are native English speakers with an excellent background of education and examination results, able to offer enthusiasm and other qualities to the school. The management of the school is a follows: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Through the Head teacher Through the Head of Secondary and Head of Primary Through Key Stage Coordinators Through curriculum Co-coordinators with experience in their particular area

The British International School of Kuala Lumpur is part of the British Schools Foundation which includes schools in Nanjing in China as well one in Moscow, Tashkent, Marbella, Pamplona, Sao Paolo, New York, Manila and Kuala Lumpur. We are members of FOBISSEA (Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia) and are already members of COBIS (Council of British International Schools). We want everyone to grow professionally from their time with us. We receive regular updates from the UK to keep ourselves abreast of developments. This enables us to make an informed view before deciding how to respond. Professional contacts are through our affiliation to COBIS (Council of British International Schools) as well as within the British Schools Foundation.

THE CURRICULUM The British International School of Kuala Lumpur is committed to following the National Curriculum of England, with regional modifications as necessary. English, Mathematics and Science provide the core of our teaching. Although great emphasis is placed on these core subjects, the children receive a balanced education with the creative curriculum being a significant component of our work. Our school tries very hard to ensure that staff work together and plan as teams. In all of this, the rich environment of Malaysia is also a wonderful resource to support an active curriculum. Three music interns started within the Music Department last year successfully augmenting our work throughout the school. Within this information pack a detailed job description for your perusal. for working with children and may be considering a future in teaching. You will work closely with the Director of Music and be expected to teach individual and group lessons in your specialism and support the work of the Music Department. The students receive an hour of curriculum music per week and in addition all students from Year 2 to Year 9 receive an hour of instrumental tuition in small groups. We are also looking to extend the number of individual lessons taught on a rotational basis throughout the week. A full programme of residential and day educational visits is in operation, as well as a comprehensive extra-curricular activities programme.

THE CHILDREN At The British International School of Kuala Lumpur the most important people are the students. Our school is probably not their first educational experience and will likely not be their last. Inevitably, we have some children who have received interrupted educational experiences and need a period of quick consolidation before an appropriate programme of development can be planned. Expatriate families normally spend on average three to four years on each contract before being relocated. However, there are also long stay families whose children will complete their education with us. Most of our children are well travelled and a journey by air will be a regular experience.

LIVING AND TEACHING IN MALAYSIA

Living in Kuala Lumpur is both an exhilarating and frustrating experience. It is a wonderful country with plenty of opportunities for travel and the people are friendly. We need to remember that we are guests in the country and are expected to observe certain cultural sensitivities. Things tend to happen much more slowly than many of us would like, so if you get irritated when things do not immediately go to plan, consider very carefully before making your application. Most staff live near the school (in fact within a 15 minute walk.) There are sports/hotel/club facilities available in the area as well as very good restaurants, entertainment and shopping centres. All Music Interns are provided with accommodation. The school provides a modern, fully equipped three-bedroom apartment of a western standard to be shared between two people.

Finally… The school aims to recruit staff of the highest calibre to develop an excellent school. BSKL is no educational backwater, as we require informed individuals and employees who can make an energetic and enthusiastic contribution to our development. I can assure you that working here will certainly enhance your career and broaden your horizons.
