Music Team Information Packet Purpose of Ministry: Worshiping God and drawing others into worship. Music Team Expectations • Committed to Campbell Church - “Music ministry is not the right of the talented but the privilege extended to the committed.” Terry Kinard (worship leader). You must be committed to Campbell and the leadership of the elders here. This also means that you must attend assemblies whenever possible, NOT ONLY when you are playing/singing on the team. You are also strongly encouraged to be a part of other ministries of the Campbell Church. ◦ We are open to having guest participation of those who do not belong to this body of believers, but the regular, ongoing, and leadership nature of this ministry requires a strong commitment to the people and leadership of this church. • Heart for God & Worship - This is a very visible ministry of the church. A significant role of each member is to model worship. Before anyone can lead anything, he must master it for himself. You cannot lead where you are not first willing to go for yourself. Also, you must be someone who worships on a continual basis. Worshiping should be a lifestyle, not a Sunday only thing! It is vitally important to have times of personal worship outside of Sundays. • Maturity: It is important to be at a level of maturity where you can accept coaching and critique from our leadership and not take it personally. Maturity also includes being responsible enough to arrive on time, spend time throughout the week preparing, and viewing this as what it is: a leadership role. (The worship team is open to those 16 years old and above, except at the discretion of the Worship Minister.) • Spiritual Maturity: We are all seen as leaders and must live our lives as such, at church and away from church, on and off the stage. • Musical Expertise - The musicians and vocalist need to be skilled enough to be able to make music together and not be a distraction because of poor musical abilities. They need to have the ability to pick up music quickly. • Time Commitment - Practice, rehearsals and Sunday pre-service preparation is mandatory. In addition, there are seminars, workshops, and more. • Support of Family - It is important that the individual’s immediate family members are willing to accept the necessary time commitment and be supportive of the individual. • Leading by Example - Worship leading is truly only done by example. This is important on stage (Are you entering into worship yourself? Do you look like you're enjoying worship and engaging with God?), as well as off. It is our obligation to get beyond our own self-consciousness, insecurities, and whatever may be hindering us from worshiping and, well, worship!

Ability to Flow and Blend with the Team - Some people are very gifted instrumentalists and/or vocalists, but for one reason or another (vocal range, experience, musical style, etc.) they have trouble flowing/blending with the team. These individuals are highly encouraged to share their musical gifts in other ways (home groups, musical specials, etc.). What the Music Team is NOT: ◦ It is not simply leading songs, choruses, or a song service. ◦ It is not playing songs/singing while others watch. This is not a performance! ◦ It is not playing music/singing while others worship. We must be skilled enough on our instrument or with our voice and know the songs well enough to be able to enter into worship ourselves. Again, we can't lead where we're not willing to go ourselves!

Worship Music Team Guidelines Auditions & Trial Period: 1. Fill out and return the information section of this packet. 2. We will then have an interview and a tryout. This will be very laid back, but necessary to make sure that your gifting is in music. You will be given songs beforehand to prepare and you will also learn a new song at the tryout. Things we will be looking for at the audition: 1. Musical and/or vocal ability 2. Stage presence (Remember: God is the audience) 3. Leadership qualities 4. Ability to learn new music If the audition goes well, we will ask you to sit in on a couple of practices. There will be an initial trial period. Typically this is an eight-week trial period. Understand that the 2nd Assembly Music Team is a new endeavor. The trial period might look like a couple of jam sessions/”dress rehearsals” as we prepare for October. At the end we will meet again if necessary to evaluate how your participation on the team is working (on both sides). Following this, we ask that you commit to at least a six month period. Weekly Practice Sessions: Practice sessions will vary according to which assembly you are serving at. Missing a rehearsal will generally mean that you cannot participate in the following assembly (this is at the worship leader’s discretion). Again, keep in mind that the 2nd Assembly Music Team is a new endeavor, so the rehearsal schedule is a work in progress.

• •

1st Assembly Music Team Rehearsal: Thursday at 7-8:15pm 2nd Assembly Music Team Rehearsal: Thursday at 8-9:15pm

There are a couple of factors to consider about the above schedule. 1. There will be weeks where the song selection needs more time than allotted. This means that rehearsal might go over a few minutes, but we will try to not go more than 15 minutes over. 2. Given everyone’s schedule, it’s understandable on occasion to arrive late or leave early. If this is the case, please notify the worship leader beforehand for the best use of the rehearsal time. Scheduling: Our schedule is kept on Planning Center Online, aka PCO (www.planningcenteronline.com), so internet access is important. The schedule will be updated at least a month in advance. You will receive an email to go on PCO and block out dates you are unavailable for the next month. Given that information, next month’s schedule will be updated on PCO. If you are part of another ministry at Campbell (and we encourage you to be!), it is your responsibility to provide any schedule conflicts to the worship leader. If a scheduling conflict arises once the notification email has been sent, notify the worship leader. Understand that you may be asked to help find a replacement. Because of this, it is important for everyone to keep their schedule up to date online to help with rescheduling. Please inform the worship leader of any change as soon as possible. This does not apply to last-minute sickness or emergencies. In those instances, let the worship leader know as soon as possible that you will not be able to serve. A note about PCO. You are able to go well in advance and block out dates that you know will be gone. This online resource not only keeps up with scheduling, but also our weekly worship orders and our song database including PDFs of sheet music, PDFs of tab sheets and MP3s of songs. Take care to look at the Sunday dates on the notification email. Our goal is to supply the worship order in advance for individuals to prepare for the week they serve. The worship order will be sent almost 2 weeks in advance. Understand on occasions that there might be last minute changes to the worship order; however, this will rarely be adding songs to the assembly. More likely it will be adding another element, which will mean we are taking songs out or shortening songs for that Sunday.

For 2nd Assembly Music Team: We strongly encourage you to attend an ABF! On the days you serve, you will miss Bible classes, (aka Adult Bible Fellowships or ABFs) because of the time for setup and sound check. For this reason, we will try to keep your participation to a maximum of once every 3 weeks. Initially, this might be once every other week. For those willing and able to serve in both assemblies: It is our hope to not use the same people on any given Sunday for both assemblies. This is for the same reason listed above regarding ABFs and also because of the amount of time required for rehearsals and for Sunday. Sundays: Each member of the team is expected to be at the service location at the designated time before each assembly. (This will vary depending on the assembly time.) This gives us time to sound check, rehearse, relax, pray and prepare before each assembly. If you have an instrument to set up, get there early enough to be ready to go at the designated time. Sunday times: • 1st Assembly Music Team: 7:30-8:10 soundcheck/rehearsal, 8:30 start. • 2nd Assembly Music Team: 10:10-11:00 soundcheck/rehearsal, 11:15 start. Special Notes for 2nd Assembly Music Team Musicians: • Our addition of an instrumental assembly is an exciting change, but extremely difficult for some in our congregation. For this reason, we will attempt to keep all instruments, including stands and accessories, off the stage until the conclusion of the 1st Assembly. • You are discouraged from leaving instruments at the building. There may be exceptions, but this is at the discretion of the worship leader. • Space and security are at a minimum at this time. • To “play skillfully” (Psalm 33:3), you must rehearse. Everyone should take the time to come prepared to confidently worship, which takes practice. You must put in the time before Thursday rehearsal and again before Sunday. Commitment to Being Spiritually Prepared to Minister: We need to come prepared not just to sing and/or play, but also to worship the God Almighty and minister to his people. We don’t have a lot of time for prayer on Sundays, so please take the time to come “prayed up!” As previously mentioned, worship is a lifestyle, so take the time to worship throughout the week. Sunday is a time to be blessed, but it’s also a time to serve.

Commitment to Musical Expertise: We need to work on our instrumental and/or vocal ability to become the best we can be. This includes personal practice as well as playing with the team. you will be working with a leader who is committed to excellence and believes in practice. We must bring the best sacrifice possible to the Lord. Familiarity of the music makes it easier to worship on Sunday mornings instead of worrying about what comes next. Commitment to Growing Spiritually: We need to be committed to maturing in our Christian walk! We cannot allow ourselves to become stagnant, or our worship will become the same. What is in our hearts is what is going to come out when we worship. Commitment to Flowing and Blending With the Team: We need to look at the team as not just a collection of individual musicians, but as a single unit with one purpose. Our attitudes should be to use our gifts to enhance the team and worship experience as a whole. There must be unity and humility in order to flow and blend under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
