Experiment with a range of design strategies to layout your article heading.

Setting Up XML In word or notepad type your XML and save as .xml eg TOPIC Heading goes here This is where you put the wee story that will go under the photo. TOPIC Heading goes here This is where you put the wee story that will go under the photo. TOPIC Heading goes here This is where you put the wee story that will go under the photo. Create your layout: can you see that your section head is the frame across the top of the page, title is the frame across the image, the rectangle frame is for the image and the notes go underneath the image. Make sure you right click on the rectangle frame and fitting, frame fitting options, centre the reference point and fit content to frame. Highlight and group the two rectangles and the rectangle frame, copy and paste so 4 fit on the page. Drag and drop your elements onto your layout.

Now you are going to apply your existing character styles from your document to these tags. This ensures consistency in your design.

Map tags to style

I went back and added some different paragraph styles so that my notes and hierarchy of headings were more professional.

Adobe InDesign

Page 13

Not pretty enough but applied! If your notes look bad you have to change them in your XML document. Spot the weird gap needs fixing. Also my headings need working up eg alignment, emphasis and hierarchy of heading level 1 and 2 aren’t perfect.

Insert QR Code Just for fun we created a free QR code of our name, saved the image and placed it on page 4 so our teacher could scan our code and know whose work it was. http://qrcode.kaywa.com/

Now we didn’t save the image so must go back and do that and then we can open our link panel and check that our files are all linked through our file management. I tried to turn the QR image into a button but perhaps a hyperlink to their website would be more useful. It didn’t work.

Insert Hyperlink Write something like contact me, highlight it, go to Type, Hyperlinks and Cross References, select where you are linking to URL or Email. Work up the Character Style and Appearances and OK.

Back in InDesign relink each image to update text to speech. XML overrides this process so it will just be your cover and your QR Code. This is for moral and ethical considerations as seeing impaired people can’t see the image will have the name of the image read to them when using a the reader.

Extensive integration Export to Flash (SWF) Create dynamic content without having to work in the authoring environment of Adobe Flash. Export SWF files directly from within InDesign, complete with page transitions, interactive buttons, rollovers, and hyperlinks. Automatically launch the Adobe Flash Player and preview a SWF file simply by exporting your InDesign layout. Export to Flash (XFL) Export your InDesign document in the new XFL file format for opening in Adobe Flash® CS4 Professional. Use the Flash authoring environment to add video, audio, animation, and complex interactivity. InDesign text exported as XFL remains fully editable when the XFL file is opened in Adobe Flash CS4 Professional. InDesign automatically converts high-resolution print assets (CMYK) to low-resolution web assets (RGB) upon export as an XFL file. An image placed multiple times in your InDesign document is saved as a single image asset with shared locations when exported as an XFL file. Interactive PDF enhancements Author interactive PDF documents by adding SWF files, Quicktime movies, and sound clips to your page layouts. Create interactive buttons, apply page transitions, and embed hyperlinks, crossreferences, and bookmarks to create an immersive reading experience. http://layersmagazine.com/creating-ibooks-epubs.html http://robcubbon.com/create-epub-ebook-indesign/ http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/digitalpublishing/ pdfs/indesigntokindle_wp_ue1.pdf

Managing illustrations If you don’t want a white background behind your illustration you need to bring illustrations from Adobe Illustrator. Create that document and save to web and devices. Make sure Transparency has a tick and save as .png not .giff To insert an image with a transparent background into the text put your cursor where you want the image to go. At this point create a paragraph style called eg centred image. Drag your image from Adobe Bridge into this space. Use ctrl, shift to resize your image. To check it’s locked in place select image, right click, lock position.

Adobe InDesign

Page 22

One or Two Extras Add a clipping path to the image You’re probably a bit worried at this point that the image you just placed is covering your text. We’re about to sort that out by adding a clipping path to the montage image. A clipping path is a really easy way to wrap text around an image. Click on the montage image with the Selection tool. Go to Object > Clipping Path > Options. The Clipping Path dialogue box will pop up. In the Type drop down list, select ‘Detect Edges’ and with the preview box ticked, play with the sliders so you can see how the outline of the image changes as you change the settings.

A clipping path is created around the entire image and the path is following the edges in the images it can find by detecting pixels or areas of colour.

Further study: anchor points are added all the way along the path so that you can manually pull any of the anchor points out or in using the Direct Selection Tool from your toolbar to show or hide more of the image if you want to. Apply a text wrap around the image With your clipping path in place, you’ll need to apply a Text Wrap to wrap your text around the clipping path so that it’s no longer hidden. Go to the Text Wrap panel and select the Wrap Around Object Shape Option. Now that the object has a clipping path, the object shape is the clipping path rather than the rectangular white background from the original image and the text will wrap nicely around the image. Adjust the tolerance settings until the texts sits in an appealing way.

The bottom of the cover page is a bit sparse, so got to the Toolbar and click on the Rectangle Tool. Draw a rectangle and change the rectangle fill colour to My Topic green using the colour swatch.

Click on Object > Arrange > Send to Back to move the rectangle behind the other elements on the page.

This isn’t a graphic design masterpiece, but it gives you a good idea of the design options available to you.

Export to PDF and HTML InDesign contains a lot of PDF export functions. You can browse through them from the File > Adobe PDF Presets menu. Preset

Function

Define…

Allows you to create a custom PDF export setting

[High Quality Print]

A good general setting to use when printing to your home/office printer.

[PDF/X…] The PDF/X settings conform to an ISO standard for graphic design, each setting has slightly different parameters in regard to image resolution and other issues, depending on the recommended output. [Press Quality] This is a standard go-to option for files that you want to send to a professional printer. This setting will include bleed, crop and trim marks and other instructions for the printer as well as preserving optimum quality for press output. [Smallest File Size] This setting downgrades images to a low-resolution setting and makes other file compressions to reduce the size of the final document. You can choose to retain hyperlinks, bookmarks and other non-printing objects in the Export dialogue box.

For other export options as well as for a specific interactive PDF option, choose File > Export.

Adobe InDesign

Page 24

There are a lot of format options available from the ‘Format’ list in the Export dialogue box. Format

Flash CS6 Professional (FLA)

Creates a file that can be edited in Flash CS6

Flash Player (SWF)

Created a file that can be viewed (but not edited) by a Flash player

HTML Encodes your layout as HTML and creates an associated CSS (cascading style sheets) from the InDesign Paragraph and Character styles. InDesignMarkup (IDML) of InDesign

Saves your layout in a format that can be opened by older versions

JPEG/PNG

Exports the layout as a JPEG/PNG image suited to web

XML

Exports your layout as XML
