tranquility Once carpeted with acre upon acre of pineapples, Lana’i, (Hawaii’s sixth largest island), is today the newest and most sheltered in the archipelago. Lovely Lanai is home to two of the world’s most celebrated resorts, a charming plantation-era town, a pair of truly incomparable golf courses, and miles of unspoiled wilderness. Blue Water Marine Mammal Watch Humpback whales visit the Hawaiian Islands but once a year and mid to late February. Each year Kohola, the Hawaiian Humpback whale, swims from Alaskan feeding grounds to the warm waters of Hawaii. Navigating by instinct alone, these whales journey hundreds of miles across vast oceans. Hawaii is their winter home, a place to play, to give birth and to start new generations. Schools of Spinner dolphins are typically spotted on this tour as well. Dolphins and whales cohabitate peacefully; in fact dolphins are frequently seen swimming with whales during and after the birth of a calf. When you witness a 45-foot whale airborne it will take your breath away. Seeing these magnificent creatures up close in their natural environment is truly an awe-inspiring, unforgettable experience.

choose your activity 4-Wheeling the Munro Trail Once guest leave the comforts of the hotel, a whole new world awaits. This off-road adventure takes them up Munro Trail to the top of Mount Lanaihele, Lanai’s highest peak at 3,368 feet, for lovely views of five other neighboring islands. The 7-mile, onelane dirt road offers sweeping vistas amongst the majestic Cook pine trees introduced by Munro himself. Horseback Riding Horses lead the way to many places in Lanai’s unique landscape that are otherwise unreachable even in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Guests choose the level of ride whether that’s a slow gentle walk or a gallop and trot. This Paniolo Trail Ride ventures into the hills surrounding Koele. Meander through guava groves and patches of ironwood trees.

Start snorkeling at Hulopo‘e Bay Marine Sanctuary which is both entertaining and educational. From Hulopo‘e Bay, head to Hulopoe Beach, Lanai’s best snorkeling spot. Fish are abundant in this marine life conservation area and Spinner dolphins are often spotted here.

Sporting Clays Lana’i Pine Sporting Clays and Archery Range features a 14-station sporting clay course, skeet field, wobble traps, compact sporting range, 12-station archery range and six-station air rifle range. It’s one of the most challenging sporting clay sites in the world. Get ready to “lock and load” at the only resort sporting clays course in the state.

On the northeast side of the island lies the ruins of an old lighthouse at Shipwreck Beach where numerous ships have wrecked due to the shallow, rocky channel. In fact, the hull of the “Liberty Ship,” an oiltanker from the 1940s, still remains from when it beached years ago.

So many sea turtles once layed their eggs on this shore that Hawaiians named the beach Polihua, or “egg nest.” Although the endangered turtles are making a comeback, they’re seldom seen here now. This strand is ideal for beachcombing and fishing.

This palm-fringed, old-sand beach is bordered by black-lava fingers, protecting swimmers from ocean currents.
