In This Issue of In Situ

In Situ is a free, not for profit, online publication featuring the “In Situ” finds of artifact collectors from across the North America. The goal at In Situ Online Publication is to support the artifact collecting community and its interests at large and to promote the hobby of artifact collecting in a responsible manner.

David Heath Editor This issue of InSitu Online Publication has been a long time in coming. For all who have sent in their photos, I would like to thank you. Please accept my gratitude for your show of support to this publication and to the artifact collecting community. Without your continued support and help, this publication would not be possible. My wife and I are currently working on a hard bound, coffee-table book version of InSitu called, “InSitu - Artifact Hunting At Its Best.” This full color book will feature many of the outstanding artifacts that have appeared in this publication. The book price (plus Shipping) will be determined and made available sometime later this year.

I found this little side notched bird point on 2/23/07, the day before my 60th birthday. It is an inch and five eighths long and made out of Smoky Hill Jasper. This piece was found along the Republican River in south central Nebraska and was my first find of 2007. - Gary Granger

The 2 3/4" stemmed Lance was found in Canal Fulton on 5-9-07. The stem sides are heavily ground, & the tip is very sharp. I was very happy when it came out whole! This is the 2nd whole late Paleo type I have found near my home. - Rob Dills

My friend, Ed Stevens, took me to some of his hunting grounds in Coshocton Co. Ohio yesterday. It was cold & snowing on & off, but it was the only day we had to hunt, so hunt we did. I found this Archaic Kirk type in a field that is considered to be mainly an Adena site. The blade has been resharpened down one side about half of its length, and the base is salvaged. This piece must have been a real favorite of its ancient maker. I have to wonder why the resharpening stopped half-way-down. Was it hafted all the way up to the point the re-sharpening stopped, making it a complete re-sharpen job? It wouldn't seem to be the case because the opposite blade edge is serrated all the way to the base. At some point it must have been re-hafted in order to make the repair to the base. I wonder if the second hafting job way further up the blade edge that the first? This would explain what appears to be a partial resharpening, and the base salvage. This Celt is 3" made of green hard stone. It was found on the farm of Bob Weigant in Wayne Co. near Burton City. Mr Weigant's farm has produced several late Adena, Hopewell artifacts. I found this Celt as the tractor was discing the field about 5 passes away from me! Rob Dills

This Folsom was found in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. I believe it’s made from Trout Creek flint. It’s right at 7/8" long and 7/8" wide, fluted on both sides and awesome flaking. Unfortunately the other half is still out there, bummer. I also found a lot of flaked flint in this same area, along with part of a flute channel; all made from the same material as this Folsom. I found this 9 1/8” complete harpoon made from a deer rib bone. It is incised with 2 and 3 bars on each of the barbs; the base has a 2” flute. – Bob Davidson

These three Stone Discs were all found on the same site within a two month period between the first of April until the last of May. One has been drilled in the center and is very well made, but is only the size of a quarter. The other two are nice Discs, but not as nice as the first one. One is just a roughly made Disc with very little polish. The last Disc has been tapped on both sides by a Drill, but the holes don't go all the way through. It is also cupped on both sides and would have been a really nice piece if not for a little plow damage to it. (Found Lawrence county, Ohio) - Steve Valentine Photos by: Steve Valentine
