Rabbi’S PeN

IN JOY AND IN SADNESS Recently there have been scores of books written about how to be happy. Many contain useful and helpful advice, missing only the central point: happiness is not actually the principle end of life.

Going To Ramah? …So is Rabbi Schuldenfrei. He will be the Rabbi-in-Residence from July 14 – 20. Let him know if your child(ren) will be there. He would be happy to give them a little extra attention! [email protected]

always to escape it. The experience of sadness, the process of grieving – that too plays a role in the varied, colorful and sometimes dolorous pageant of life.

The philosopher Robert Nozick proposed an experiment years ago, the "experience machine." It would give a virtual experience of everything the person wanted so that it would all seem lifelike and ideal. Most people would reject such an existence. Why? Because although we all want to be happy, Rabbi David Wolpe happiness is not all we want. We want something Psychologist Fritz Perls taught that ‘the only way out is through.’ You deeper, richer, and harder than happiness alone. cannot shortcut experience. To live a full life is to This observation is ancient as Greek tragedy and live a life marked by all manner of contrary and pownew as modern literature. As the years have erful experiences. passed, Aldous Huxley's novel “Brave New World”

has grown in relevance. Remember the words of "The Savage" in his book, rejecting the SOMA drug that made everyone happy: "I don't want comfort. I want God. I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin." The story of Adam and Eve is the story of our lives. Growing up is filled with disillusion and pain alongside love and joy. In our better moments we recall that the difficulties of life are essential to savor its sweetness. No healthy person welcomes pain; no mature person tries

The Torah teaches us to "serve God with joy" but to get there we will have to make our way through disappointment, sorrow and struggle. In the Midrash Rabbi Johanan reminds us that the eye has a dark part and a light part, but one can only see through the dark part. Darkness grants insight and vision. Our task is not to seek happiness, but to reach out to one another, to deepen our souls, and to seek God. As the summer passes and the new year comes closer let us recall this vital lesson of our souls.

On Thursday, May 21st, Rabbi Brian Schuldenfrei and Executive Director Howard Lesner surprised Rabbi Nicole Guzik as they flew to New York to attend her ordination and graduation from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Both of them were there to celebrate with her and are thrilled as is the rest of the Sinai staff and community that she will be joining the Sinai family beginning July 1st!

I would be remiss if I did not start out my fist column with a tip of the kipot to Kurt Smalberg whose smiling face has graced this column for the past two years.

without his incredible generosity. Sinai Temple is so lucky to have Max Webb as a friend. Many thanks to Max.

Kurt and I have met a number of times and he has been most gracious in extending himself. Each time Kurt’s list of things to go over got longer and longer. He has brought me Ira M. Friedman up to speed on all of the issues and matters that are currently going on at Sinai Temple.

All of our clergy bring different perspectives to Sinai Temple. All our constituencies, which are very diverse, have one thing in common, they all fit under the Sinai Temple tent.

We have had to say “Rabbinic Intern” for so long it is great to finally say Rabbi Nicole Guzik. She joins the rest of the jewels in the Sinai Temple crown jewels of clergy, both Rabbis and Cantors. Rabbi Guzik’s infectious enthusiasm will create even more excitement in the activities she will lead.

Get involved. It’s your synagogue. Start working on a committee where most of the work is done by the lay leadership. We have over 30 committees. Many of the committees are looking for more members. Your education and life experiences can greatly help those committees achieve their goals.

I know that Kurt’s motivation is truly what’s best for Sinai and One of my missions is to have more diversity, both male and to insure an orderly transition. female, as well as cultural diversity from the many different I am truly humbled to be elected as President of a synagogue segments represented by our membership. I am looking forward to serving Sinai Temple as its President and hope that I can count on your support. An icon in both the world of business and for his generosity to numerous charities and Sinai Temple, Max Webb’s gift will B’shalom enable Sinai Temple to do things we would not been able to do Ira Dear Sinai Temple, The Torah has high expectations. We do too. Torah expects its followers to abide by 48 different levels of commitment. Some of those include: engaging in unhurried reflection, being persistent in study, and learning in order to teach. We are required to engage with one another, discuss the modern relevance on Torah, and strive to transition from students to teachers of Torah. Wrestling, struggling, conversing, singing, and dancing with Torah shows commitment and dedication. Connecting to Torah is a relationship that takes work…but well worth the time and effort. This year I am fortunate to lead Torah in the Round, an exciting, participatory, and musical service at Sinai Temple. With the incredible partnerships of Cantor Arianne Brown and Dale Schatz, we are privileged to regularly engage Torah in the most interactive of ways, turning the Torah round and round through learning, dancing, praying, discussing, and sharing. Every member of our minyan is involved—reading Torah, leading text study, opening a home for Shabbat lunch, teaching a song, or giving voice to an issue. We are reflective, persistent, and committed—This is Torah in the Round.

Torah in the Round regularly meets on the third Shabbat of the month, usually located in Kohn Chapel. We are pleased to introduce new elements to our minyan: 1) Seviva (turning)— Contact me ([email protected]) to assist in the leadership and growth of our minyan. Make Torah in the Round a home where we explore ways to build a stronger community. 2) Ruach Shabbat (spirit of Shabbat)—Join us for Shabbat lunch! Mark July 18th on your calendar. After Torah in the Round, we will meet at Holmby Park for a picnic lunch. Bring your blanket and a kosher meal. We will provide the challah, grape juice, and music. 3) Sevivon (spinning top)—Open your home for a chance to learn together as a community. Once every six weeks we will meet in a congregant’s home, schmooze and study. Let me know if you would like to host and provide a more intimate atmosphere to learn about one another. We are ready to commit to Torah—through reflection, persistence, and study. Are you? Welcome to Torah in the Round! Kol tuv, Rabbi Nicole Guzik

It’s been a very busy last three months. Since February, our Men’s Club has been going through different Annual Programs. In March, we had our annual yom haShoah candle packaging and I would like to thank all of the volunteers for staying till late at night Bijan Bina, President with their families to make sure the boxes will reach our members on time. In April, we had our annual Men’s Club Shabbat and this program would not have been possible without a tremendous effort by Robert Mokhtarzadeh and the help of Rabbi Wolpe, Dr. Paul Herman and Brian Weiner. This program was followed by our 22nd annual Burning Bush award dinner dedicated to support Sinai Temple Israel Center. Our honorees for this event were Dorice & Jacob Melamed and Abby & Ira Friedman. On behalf of the Men’s Club I would like to congratulate our honorees and thank them for their generous donations to Sinai Temple Israel Center. Our next program is roses for rosh hashanah which will happen in September. We will send the order forms out sometime in August. I would like to thank Alex Baskin in advance for organizing this program this year and for the past few years. On Monday July 20th at 7:10 p.m. our Cantor Ari Brown will perform the National Anthem at the dodger Stadium when the LA Dodgers will play against the Cincinnati Reds. I would like to thank Phil Rosenbaum, Dr. Paul Herman, Robert Mokhtarzadeh and Shervin Behnam for the time and effort they put into this program. Men’s Club will be offering discounted tickets to the game. For more information please call Paul Herman at 310.476.6111. Discounted seats will be available thru July 6th. We were blessed with three outstanding speakers for our last three monthly meetings. In April, our Guest Speaker was Mr. Howard Lesner and his subject was “ShUl BiZ 101”. Howard spoke

about how Sinai Temple and Akiba run under his supervision. He provided us with information about membership, operating budget, number of active members, students, tuitions, Centennial Campaign, Kol Nidre and a lot more……. In May, our Guest Speaker was Dr. Donald Salem and his subject was “the eMP for you and Me”. Dr. Salem spoke in length about the Electro Magnetic Pulse Attack. In June, our Guest Speaker was Deputy General Consul of Israel Honorable Gil Artzyeli. Honorable Artzyeli spoke about the Peace Process and relations between Israel and the U.S. As you all know Sinai Temple, Sinai Temple Men’s Club and Federation of Jewish Men’s Club lost one of their icons, Mr. Donal Dreyfus. Donal was one of the most active members of our Temple, as well as many other organizations. May G-D rest him in peace and comfort the entire Dreyfus family. And last but not least, on behalf of our Men’s Club I would like to congratulate Dr. Jules Moster, our 2008 Man of the year, Kurt Smalberg for serving two successful years as the president of Sinai Temple and Ira Friedman, our president-elect. Special thanks to Jem Caterers, Paula, Matthew and Murray Cohen for their generous support at all times and Nejati Studio for taking beautiful pictures at the Burning Bush dinner. Personal Note: On May 3-5 I had the opportunity to go to aiPaC Conference in Washington D.C. This was the most fascinating and exciting trip of my life. I shared four days with Rabbi Wople, Cantor Gole, Jan Zakowski, Sinai Temple delegates and 6500 other Jews and Non-Jews to see how they all care about the State of Israel. I’m looking forward to the next AIPAC conference and I recommend it to all of you to join Sinai Temple delegates on March 21, 2010. Best Regards, Bijan Bina
