BACKGROUND To me, teaching is the most important work of art… Joseph Beuys Art Forum 1969

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey presents the exhibition Beuys and Beyond. Teaching as Art; a selection of works on paper from the Deutsche Bank Collection by the German artist Joseph Beuys and six of his most accomplished students: Lothar Baumgarten, Imi Knoebel, Jörg Immendorff, Blinky Palermo, Katharina Sieverding and Norbert Tadeusz. Joseph Beuys was a significant teacher and mentor for many students of the post-war generation in Germany and is acknowledged as one of the most relevant artists of the second half of the twentieth century for his innovative contributions to avant-garde movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Beuys encountered a platform in teaching for his ideas about the role of the artist, art as cultural and social capital, and he advocated for a wider and more democratic approach to art. Beuys regarded teaching as integral to his art practice. He also participated with his students in performative actions and public interventions that were often controversial. Beuys and Beyond is also linked to a retrospective of over 30 years of works by the influential Mexican artist, Mario Rangel Faz. Coordinates. Mario Rangel Faz, is presented in conjunction with the work of Grupo Suma and Atte. La Dirección, two artist collectives based in Mexico City, of which Rangel Faz was a founding member. Although Beuys and Rangel Faz were generations apart, there are clear correlations in their devotion to drawing as an extension of one’s being to make “ideas visible.” Both men challenged the status quo and entrenched institutional values through their actions and collaborations.

Beuys and Beyond. Teaching as Art features nearly 100 drawings, prints, and photographs, including watercolors by Beuys, the geometric and colorful abstractions of Imi Knoebel, the figurative watercolors by Norbert Tadeusz, Katharina Sieverding’s conceptual photographs and the historical German analyses by Jörg Immendorff. The exhibition highlights how Beuys clearly encouraged his students to not copy but follow their own individual way. Coordinates. Mario Rangel Faz, is co-curated by Vicente Rojo Cama and Mariana Elizondo, and originates from the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City. The exhibition includes prints and acrylics by Rangel Faz; diverse mixed-media works by the collective Grupo Suma and video and installations by Atte. La Dirección. Beuys and Beyond. Teaching as Art is the third exhibition of works from the Deutsche Bank Collection that is traveling to leading museums in Latin America. In 2002, MARCO was pleased to present The Return of the Giants. German Painting 1975-1985. Deutsche Bank Collection that explored German figurative painting, and, in 2006, More Than What the Eye Can See. Beuys and Beyond , installed at MARCO until 24 April 2011, has been exhibited already in Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires and Mexico City; after MARCO it will travel to Bogotá, São Paulo and Lima. At each stop of the tour, an exhibition of works by artists from that country has been organized in conjunction with the presentation.
