Importing References to EndNote (Windows) PubMed Perform a search in PubMed.

1. Select desired citations. Tip: check none to import all references.

2. Select MEDLINE display.

4. Save in a temporary location, e.g. your desktop. 6

5. Save as a Text File 6. Click on Save.

7. Open your EndNote library.

8. From the File menu select Import…

9. From the Import dialog box, click on Choose File.

10. Locate your saved text file. 11. Double click to select.

12. For Import Option, select Other Filters…

Tip: next time, PubMed will appear on this menu for selection.

13. Click on PubMed. 14 14. Click on Choose.

15. Click on Import.

The PubMed citations will be imported into your EndNote library. Tip: Only the citations you just added to your library will appear in the library window. To view all of the items in your library, from the References menu

choose Show All References.

All citations will display in your library window.

Tip: if all selected references do not import into your EndNote library, and you are using EndNote 7 or earlier, you will need to get the latest PubMed filter. Download this filter from http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp.

1. Select the appropriate platform.

2. Scroll down to PubMed.

note: filters are listed by date; you may need to navigate to the next screen.

3. Click on FTP.

4. Click on Save.

5. Click on Save (in the EndNote Filters folder).

6. Click on Yes to replace the PubMed filter.

Tip: to use the new PubMed filter, you must first exit EndNote, then reopen it.

EMBASE

1. Perform a search in EMBASE.

2. Select desired citations.

3. In results window, select Export.

4. Select EndNote.

5. Click on Selected…

6. Open with EndNote.

7. Click on OK. 6

8. In the EndNote dialog box, select a library.

9. Click on Open.

The citations will be imported into your library. Tip: Only the citations you just imported will show in the library window. (see p.3 for how to show all references)

OVID Databases - including Biosis, CAB Abstracts

1. Perform a search in an OVID database.

2. Select desired citations.

3. Scroll down to Results Manager.

4. Choose Selected Results.

5. Select Complete Reference.

6. Choose Direct Export.

6. Click Save.

7. In the EndNote dialog box, select a library. 8. Click on Open.

The citations will be imported into your library.

Tip: Only the citations you just imported will show in the library window. (see p.3 for how to show all references)

Web of Science / Science Citation Index

Perform a search in Web of Science.

1. Select desired citations.

2. Click on add to marked list. Tip: if you do not wish to save the abstract and keywords, click Export and skip steps 2-5. 2

3. Click on Marked List.

4. Select additional fields to save in your library, such as keywords or abstract.

5. Click on Export to Reference Software.

6. In the EndNote dialog box, select a library.

7. Click on Open.

The citations will be imported into your library.

Tip: Only the citations you just imported will show in the library window. (see p.3 for how to show all references)

EBSCO Databases - including PsycInfo, ERIC, NTIS, Alt-Health Watch

Perform a search in an EBSCO database.

3. Click on Save to Disk.

5. Choose this format.

4. Click on Bibliographic Manager.

6. Click on Save.

7. If prompted, select EndNote.

8. In the EndNote dialog box, select a library. 9. Click on Open.

From the list of import filters, navigate to the filter for the desired EBSCO database. (see page 4-5 above for details on saving filters)

WorldCat / FirstSearch

Perform a search in WorldCat / FirstSearch.

1. Select desired records.

2. Click on Export. Tip: scroll to the top or bottom of screen for this.

3. Choose Marked Records... and EndNote.

5. In the EndNote dialog box, select a library.

E-RESEARCH @ HARVARD References saved in ‘My Research’ can be directly exported into EndNote.
