Constructing Professional Relationship Vice President Message 2016 Please join your IDHA Board of Trustees for the 70 th IDHA Annual Session and Professional Development Day! You will notice that the House of Delegates spans Friday and Saturday this year; which will allow Delegates to spend more time “building relationships” with their colleagues and friends. On Friday, you will have a chance to attend the Mega Issues CE, where we will be talking about “building relationships” that will help move dental hygiene in the forward direction that our profession needs to go in order to better serve our patients. In the afternoon, Casey Rundle is presenting an ergonomics CE that should prove valuable for students and seasoned hygienists alike. HIPAC on Friday night is always fun (for a good cause). Saturday's events include a CE presented by Eileen Morrissey (you may have read her articles in RDH magazine) and a Lunch and Learn CE on the new gingivitis code. I hope you use this weekend to build relationships, learn, relax, and support your IDHA with your attendance at each event!

President Message 2016 Welcome! I am so excited you are choosing IDHA for your continuing education and I am also excited to share our Professional Development weekend with you! I think it's fair to say that our career path as dental hygienists has changed a lot over the last 10-15 years and this Annual Session will allow us to continue moving dental hygiene into the future of health care. From ergonomics that allow us to practice longer with less damage to our bodies to mega issues discussions that will help shape the future of dental hygiene's practice settings and scope of practice. Over the last year your IDHA BOT has worked hard to develop the best transition for our Association as we work to maintain our charter agreement with our parent tripartite, ADHA and has developed key partnerships that will help make our future transitions into Essential Primary Care Providers seamless. Thank you for joining us this week and for supporting the profession that Develops, Supports, and Empowers you - the Indiana dental hygienist. Amanda Apple, LDH, BGS, IDHA President

“Alternative Dental Hygiene Settings” 2 CEU Friday, November 4, 2016 9:30-11:30am Want to see what our Legislative Council has been up to? Want to learn about direct access, collaborative agreements, and scope of practice possibilities for Indiana dental hygienists? The Mega Issues continuing education course will answer all those questions! As the healthcare world changes, dentistry is no exception. One way Indiana can address and improve the access to care concerns, create partnership across the medical professions, and increase employment opportunities is by expanding the scope of practice for dental hygienists through direct access to patients. This mega issues discussion will allow us to work with other health care providers to help bridge the medicaldental gap. We invite you to bring your experience, expertise, and enthusiasm as we work to improve dental hygiene in Indiana.

Continuing Education

“Ergonomics” 3 CEU Friday, November 4, 2016 2:00-5:00pm

As a practicing hygienist for over 14 years, Kasey knows that as hygienists we put our bodies in compromising positions that can cause pain and even loss of work. This course will cover seating positions, lighting, instruments, and many other items to consider in extending the life of your career. This course will also highlight stretches you can do chairside and at home at the end of your day. Please dress comfortably to participate.

Kasey Rundle, LDH is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer. She trains her clients in a personal training studio called Studio Fit’nez located in Fishers, Indiana. She received her personal training certification in December 2010. Kasey attended Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and received her Dental Hygiene Degree in 2002. She worked full time as a dental hygienist in a private practice until 2012. As she was able to grow her personal training business, she worked fewer days in the dental office. She currently practices one day a week at an office in Anderson, IN.

Continuing Education “Roar of Womanhood: How Life’s Phases Impact Oral Health” 3 CEU Saturday, November 5, 2016, 8:00am-11:00am Women; hear the roar! If you are listening to this seminar, you either are a woman; and/or you have significant women in your lives. You may be a hygienist caregiver; and are, no doubt, a receiver of care. For all the ways that we connect to women, this seminar will be meaningful. From adolescence to adulthood to the childbearing years to peri-menopause to menopause and beyond, the journey of a woman’s life and its impact on oral health is meaningful and significant. As clinicians, it is integral that we understand all possible impact and ramifications enabling us to better serve our female clients. As receivers of care, we now understand the perspective more fully, enabling us to apply this knowledge to expand our care provider roles. If you enjoy theatrics, you will appreciate this seminar! Learning Outcomes: • Review and implement into practice how the phases of the woman’s’ life cycles impact oral health. • Gain knowledge of contemporary theory with regard to “treatment” of physical, mental, and emotional challenges as they pertain to oral health. • Integrate into practice, optimal oral assessment and treatment the woman’s journey through the ages. This presentation will include live reenactment of clinical interactive dialogue with women "through the ages/stages." (Can we say Fun-Fun?) This is a crowd pleaser! Eileen Morrissey, RDH, MS, is a WOMAN! She is a practicing dental hygienist, as well as a teacher, writer and speaker. She is on faculty at Burlington County Community College. She lectures nationally. She has published many articles, and her monthly column “Anecdotal Hygienist” can be read in RDH Magazine.

“CDT Code D4346: What does it mean?” 1 CEU Saturday, November 5, 2016, 11:30am-12:30pm On May 17, 2016, the scaling code D4346, by the Current Dental Terminology Code, was approved and will become effective January 1, 2017. As a result, there may be numerous questions in regards to implementation of this new code. This course will discuss the purpose and utilization of this new scaling code. “D4346 scaling in presence of generalized moderate or severe gingival inflammation – full mouth, after oral evaluation the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from supra- and sub-gingival tooth surfaces when there is generalized moderate or severe gingival inflammation in the absence of periodontitis. It is indicated for patients who have swollen, inflamed gingiva, generalized suprabony pockets, and moderate to severe bleeding on probing. Should not be reported in conjunction with prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, or debridement procedures.” Pamela Rettig, RDH, MS is a full time faculty at Indiana University School of Dentistry. She graduated from Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists and earned a Master of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education from University of Missouri Kansas City. She has 27 years of clinical dental hygiene experience and is currently the course director for the first year dental hygiene clinic courses, Oral Anatomy, and Introduction to Preventive Dentistry.
