“Putting students first, investing in staff”

April 2011

Dear Parent/Carer, I am sure you can see from this newsletter, the wealth of activities that The Deanes School offers. In fact, we had too many articles to fit in one publication!

I was delighted to invite fifty students from Westwood Primary School to spend a day with us as part of our Focus Friday initiative. They will be returning next term to work with our staff and students.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this term spending time with our fabulous students. I am now in I must thank all parents, staff and students for the process of redesigning our site in response to the opportunities the new Nursery building has given to us.

We are keen to listen to your views and will be asking for views on our new weekly news sheet and our plans for a newly designed termly newsletter. As we say goodbye to this old newsletter and prepare for the new, I wish you all a very happy Easter and look forward to next term. Yours sincerely,

We value students’ opinion very highly, which is why I have been meeting weekly with my Year 10 prefects, who are full of ideas of how to make The Deanes an even better place to be. Plans are already underway to open a new Study Support Centre in the old Nursery building to ensure all students, including our Gifted and Talented, achieve the highest grades possible and with a feeling that The Deanes School has helped them to be “the best that they can be”!

Gifted and Talented Year 9 Archaeology

A

t the beginning of March our Year 9 Gifted and Talented students visited Cambridge University for an Archaeology Event titled ‘Time Travel for Beginners’. This activity raised the aspirations of our students, giving their academic performance a boost. By taking part in an archaeological excavation they made new discoveries abut themselves and the world around them. The day consisted of three main learning activities: Revelations from Rubbish. A hands on session where the students explored how archaeologists use physical objects to learn about life in the past. Changing Rooms.

My Day at the King John School

M

y day at The King John School on the 17th of February 2011 was amazing, one of the best school days of my life and a great lifetime opportunity.

we might be doing during the day. All sorts of things popped up like: playing games, acting, poetry, videos absolutely everything.

It all started when we chose our free books at school in the library; the one I chose was called ‘The Crowfield Curse’ written by the incredible author Pat Walsh who has written many books in her very successful life. Her second book in the series is coming out in April 2011, named The Crowfield Demon.

Suddenly a huge surprise came along; for the WHOLE day we would be working with Dave Cryer an author who brings books to life. We were acting out all different genres of books e.g. dramatic, hilarious, daunting, magical and more and working with students from the other schools. This was extremely scary, but also fun because we had the chance to meet new people and make new friends from the other schools, which was part of the whole process of the day.

As you already know, everyone had to choose a book, and with that book you had to redesign the front cover to what you thought it should look like in your mind. After everyone had designed a new cover, Mrs. Fortescue (the Head Librarian) then chose the 12 winning designs from the year 7 competition to go with her to The King John School. These students were: Lauren Greenbaum, Brogan Smith, Cian Daly, Keelan Irwin, Topaz Baker, Melissa Burton, Sophie Kauter, Maisie Mackenzie, Ellie Macnab-Stark, Robbie Plant, Conor Spurgeon and Kira Sandison. The two runners up were: Brooke Smith and Will Bradby. The day began by meeting up with my fellow students from The Deanes School at The King John School reception at 8:45 and then meeting the students from the other schools. These schools were: King John, Sweyne Park and Chase High. We were then taken to the Library and sat with our school students for about 5 minutes wondering what

I also had the chance of acting and performing in front of the other schools and in front of my friends ... EMBARRASSING!!! Eventually when I decided to come out of my comfort zone I stepped up with my group and performed our trailer for the book we had chosen. After all it was not as bad as I thought it would be-believe me. During one day with the booked-up group I had met new people and made new friends, boosted my confidence by coming out of my comfort zone, met an author who I had never heard of before, acted out chapters of books and had the ultimate school day of my life! So my day was great and whoever gets picked to do it next year I hope your day is as good as mine was!! By

This session considered the way in which the passage of time changes the evidence archaeologists use to understand the past. From Objects to Ideas. The students worked in small groups to identify and interpret a collection of finds from an archaeological site. n Science it has been a truly atomic term with results pouring in.

Year 5 We had Year 5 in school for 3 evenings doing Science activities. Mr Mason and a band of Year 10 helpers brought Science to life with the help of some old trusty atomic friends. The first week the pupils learnt about metals and non metals and how they join and get oxidised. The second week they learnt about acids and alkalis and how different indicators can be made The third week they learnt about sticky water…Yes actual sticky water. Mr Mason would like to thank Laura Ablitt, Charlotte Hurst, Ellise Morris, Rebecca Kelsey and Lauren Corney especially for the help given. Some of the comments made by the parents are listed below. “An absolutley brilliant initiative ... my son is now loaning Science books from the library” (Thundersley Primary School, parent) “I loved the rapport between my child, the teacher and student leaders ... this really contributed to the quality of the learning, thank you” (Hadleigh School parent) “Thank you, my daughter is now really looking forward to joining The Deanes School” (Hadleigh Juniors, parent) “10/10 brilliant”! (Kingston Primary, parent) Year 8 Year 8 students did a Focus Friday during Science Week, on Communication. They had to learn about sound and how to communicate to someone who was deaf, plus they had to communicate an idea of an invention to someone else. These were sent off by Mrs Riley for a National Competition. Fingers Crossed. Year 10 Year 10 had their first examinations back from January and overall they were

The Deanes Snooker Challenge If a child has reached their target they score a century break. All the pupils below as you can see reached their target and beyond. Every point they got above their challenging target, they received extra points. Amelia Walsh, Ryan Ballinger, Rhiana V Smith, Joe Bond and April Bishop are on course to win the Snooker High Break Cup.

Year 7 Sensational Spring Term

n this spring term the Year 7 tutor groups have had to each take it in turns to plan and present an assembly on Monday mornings. The themes covered in the assemblies were: inclusion, participation, unhappiness, compassion and celebrations. Each tutor group was given a different one of the above themes and had a couple of weeks to discuss the theme in class and then one week to plan their assembly. The Year 7’s worked well and the actual assemblies have been as diverse as the themes.

It runs on Tuesday lunchtimes and at the moment the boys are beating me every time! In Humanities the Year 7’s have been learning about the topic of “Hazards & Disasters”. In this unit of work they have had to explore among other things the recent earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, volcanoes and hurricanes. The pupils have worked hard and learned quite a lot about how the physical earth can cause problems for our growing population. One of the most enjoyable tasks has been to build cross section models of volcanoes and to engineer earthquake proof buildings. Miss Anderson Head of Year 7

Comic Relief Fund Raising - Deanes Really Does Have Talent

s part of the school’s fund raising for Comic Relief, students, parents, grandparents and friends packed into the school hall to witness an immense range of talent. The audience was treated to performances by dancers and musicians who ably illustrated the wealth of creativity we have at The Deanes School. There were group performances and solo artists. Mr. Davey who organised and acted as our compere for the evening made us all feel welcome and introduced each act, ensuring a swift turnaround,

assisted by a panel of judges. Mrs. Hopkins managed back stage and students organised lighting and sound to great effect.

However, we were also treated to an ape playing the drums, thanks to Jessica Selley, Sam Hall’s superb break dancing and a dancing tree – thanks Ben!

All of the students who performed were outstanding! But someone had to win and Megan Buxton and Hayley Blatcher shared the top spot after delivering two very moving solo singing performances.

Everyone agreed that it was a great night’s entertainment that seemed to fly past. Thanks again to Mr. Davey for organising the event!

They were closely followed by Lauren Bullock whose spectacular tap dancing routine was totally professional.

Southend Drama Festival 2011

O

n Thursday 31st March 2011, a brave bunch of Year 10 GCSE Drama students performed a one-act play to friends, family and paying public at The Southend Drama Festival. The Southend Drama Festival is one of the best on the festival circuit with high standards that rival the rest of the country. It is a national festival that is adjudicated by some of the top adjudicators in the country. This year’s adjudicator was Charles Evans, an Associate of the Drama Board and GODA accredited drama adjudicator, a specialist in Harold Pinter and a published playwright and poet. The students performed “Blackout” by Davey Anderson, originally performed by The National Youth Theatre, this play was a very challenging piece that looks at how one life changing moment can influence us into making a series of wrong choices ultimately leading to a spiral of violence. Backstage the group were very nervous but looked fabulous in their matching grey hoodies. The piece was just within the time limit of 20 minutes by 7 seconds (these students love to make me panic!) In his adjudication, Charles Evans commented on how this was a bold choice and whilst he disagreed with the way we presented it as an ensemble, rather than having lead characters, he was very impressed with the highly disciplined choral and choreography work that was used.

Year 11 Successful In Duke of Edinburgh

16 Year 11 Students from the Deanes School went away this weekend to North West Essex for their final assessment expedition in order to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Qualification. Over the course of Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April they walked / navigated unaided self planned routes covering a total distance of 25KM (10hours 30mins walking in total) and camped and cooked in the evening / early morning in what were very cold temperatures. The students were continually assessed throughout the weekend by a member of Essex County Council acting on behalf of the Duke Edinburgh Awarding Body, who was very impressed with their ability, enthusiasm, spirit and team work which led to them being passed off successfully. In addition to this expedition, the students have also completed 3 months of voluntary work, 3 months learning a skill and 6 months carrying out a physical recreation, all in their own time in order to complete the award. Needless to say these students are a real credit to themselves and to our School, the successful students were: Lauren Watson, Josie McGee, Alex Edge, Dani Lewis, Mary Pressman, Matt Monte, Sean Spurgeon, Elli Jade Smith, Annie King, Lily Tozer, Anna Goldup, Masie Thorpe, Esme Chipperfield, Liam Gardner, Elliott Ferry, Nathan Dodds.

Greensward, Castle View, King Edmund and drawing with Cornelius. The Year 8s, who had a difficult season with tough opposition, produced their best performance against Sweyne Park, a match in which they had to secure at least a point to remain in the “A League”. The game finished a 1-1 draw and saw a performance from the team that was worthy of all 3 points. Nevetheless, 1 point was enough and the team will continue in the top flight next season. The Year 9s showed the most improvement as a team this season with 4 victories out of 6. Saving their best performance for a 3-2 last minute thriller against King Edmund, a match and result which proved crucial when the overall league positions were decided at the end of the season. Well Done to all those players who made this season such a success.

Sports Person of The Term Award Every half term one male and one female student from each year group are presented with the Deanes School “Sports Person of The Term Award”. This is an award that recognises outstanding effort in Physical Education lessons as well as a high level of commitment, performance and contribution to extra curricular school sport and physical activity. A big congratulation to the winners from this half term, who will receive a certificate of achievement and go in the ‘hall of fame’. Aimhigher at The Deanes School.

T

his is a programme which aims to widen participation in Higher Education, by raising the aspirations and developing the abilities of our students’ from under-represented groups. It typically involves students from Year 9 and 10 who have the potential to progress to Higher Education. This is achieved by raising attainment and aspirations, through a range of activities, with parents/carers included where possible. Some of these events and activities run in partnership with local schools, Further Education Colleges, Higher Education Institutions and other relevant organisations that encourage young people to consider Higher Education as an option for them. Throughout the year the students are given opportunities to be involved in a number of different Aimhigher activities. This gives them an insight into educational pathways and career opportunities which they may not be currently aware of. I believe that with this increase in curiosity, our student’s will be encourage to reach their full potential with their studies at The Deanes School and beyond. Our Year 9 Aimhigher students have had the opportunity to participate in an Animation Event delivered by Anglia Ruskin University. I am currently in discussion with Writtle College regarding events linked to Sport and Leisure, and Equine and Animal Care. Our Year 10 Aimhigher students have gained a valuable insight into future careers by a variety of different events offered by our local colleges. These have included ICT, Performing Arts, Sports and Events, Business, Enterprise and Retail, Science and Music Studies. Each event begins with an inspirational Keynote Speaker, followed by hands on learning activities with students from other schools. Many of our Aimhigher students are nervously waiting to hear of offers for Summer Schools taking place at Cambridge and Essex University. T

he Year 11 Football Team finished their 5 years of Football at The Deanes in style last night Monday 4th April 2011. In their last ever football match for school they were against fellow “A League” rivals Sweyne Park School. Needing a victory and 3 points to secure 3rd Place in the Castle Point and Rochford District “A League” the boys produced a strong and hard fought team performance which was rewarded with a late winning goal from Christian Darby with 2 minutes to go, to finish 1-0 winners. This victory, along with others against Appleton and King Edmund, in the League meant that the boys finished a very rewarding 3rd place overall in the Castle Point and Rochford District Football Leagues, narrowly missing out on runners up position.
