Dear friends in Christ, A man who was traveling in Palestine spent a day with a shepherd as he led his flock of sheep across the hills of Palestine. As they leisurely walked along and visited, the man noticed that one of the older sheep had difficulty walking, and always stayed close to the shepherd. After a while, he asked the shepherd why the sheep never ventured more than a few feet away. The shepherd answered, "That sheep is one of the oldest in the flock. Soon after it was born I discovered that it was partially deaf. When it was a little lamb, it was always straying away from the fold and could not hear my voice. Many times, I had to resCUe it from danger. Finally, I had to inflict that injury on its leg myself. Ever since that day the sheep has limped and it also stays closer to me for guidance and protection." Limping at the shepherd's side! What a beautiful picture of the blessings that are derived by a Christian who must bear a cross! Limping - yes, but limping - at his Shepherd's side. The Apostle Paul had a similar "limp." He called it a "thorn in the flesh." In II Corinthians 12:7-9, he refers to it as "the devil's messenger to plague me and keep me from getting proud. Three times I begged the Lord to have him leave me alone, but He told me, 'My grace is enough for you. When you are weak My power is doing its best work. '" The Father in His love may have found it necessary to allow some plague into your life; some sorrow; some bitter disappointment; some weakness, or affliction. But, we can be certain that God will continue to bless us that we might grow in faith as We persevere through our trial. If God has given us a burden that is causing us to limp, we may be sure that He wants to use that burden to draw us closer to Him. May the Lord bless and keep you close to Him - with or without a limp,
~py

Many people look forward with excitement to months with special occasions or celebrations, like New Year's Day in January, Valentine's Day in February, Easter in March or April, Mother's Day in May, Father's Day in June, Independence Day in July, Labor Day in September, Reformation Day in October, Thanksgiving Day in November and Christmas in December. August seems to be one of those months when there is not much to celebrate. Major League baseball players refer to this month as the "Dog Days of August." It seems to be a month that has been simply added to the calendar to fill out 31 more days that will add up to 365 for the year. Even kids sometimes look at August as a boring month. Vacations are usually over, the days seem to move by so slowly, and they actually look forward to the end of August or early September when a new school year starts again. Of course, that will change before very long. Life is like that. Not every day, week or month is as exciting as some others, but each one presents another opportunity for service. Redeemed stewards look for opportunities to make the most of time because time is an important gift from God. Making the most of time can take us in a number of different directions. Included among these directions are time for meditation and reflection, time for rest and time for planning ahead. God's Old Testament people sometimes grumbled about getting the Sabbaths over so they could get back to selling wheat, skimping the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales ... (Amos 8:5). Rather than observing the Sabbath as a day of rest, reflection and worship, they saw it as a wasted day. Perhaps August has been given to us from God to use like a Sabbath rest. As God's redeemed stewards we can use quiet times for worship, reflection, meditation and planning. This can be a very positive way to use time that some might think is boring.
God's redeemed stewards, in cooperation with and encouragementjromfellow redeemed stewards, manage all oflife and life'S resources {including timeJfor God's purposes. Other life resources include money, relationships, abilities, care of our bodies and creation, sharing the Gospel of salvation in Jesus and so much more! Let August be a reminder that we are God's stewards 365 days a year and we live freely and joyfully as His stewards in August as well as the other eleven months of the year. Have a refreshing, relaxing and blessed August! Reprinted LCYIS Stewardship Resources 08/11

WHA T EXACTL Y IS STEPHEN MINISTRY? Stephen Ministry is a program in our congregation in which trained and supervised lay persons, called Stephen Ministers, provide one-to-one Christian care to individu als facing life challenges or difficulties. Stephen Ministers are the caregivers. They have been through 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving, including general topics such as listening, feelings, boundaries, assertiveness, and using Christian resources in careglvmg. Care receivers are the recipients of Stephen Ministers' care. They are people from our church or community who are expelrileIncing ~ divorce, fgrief, IOdsls of a job, loneliness, hospitalization, termina i ness, .. or any 0 an en ess number of other life difficulties. Stephen Ministers usually meet with their care receivers once a week for about an . hour for as long as the care receiver will benefit by the relationship. Stephen Ministers ARE caring Christian friends who listen, understand, accept, and pray for and with care receivers. Stephen Ministers ARE NOT counselors. Their role is to listen and care-not to give advice or counsel. They are trained to recognize when care receivers' needs exceed what they can provide and will refer them to appropriate agencies. Stephen Ministers are people you can trust. Confidentiality is one of the most important principles of Stephen Ministry, and what a care receiver tells his or her Stephen Minister is kept in strictest confidence. Dan Canfield is our Stephen Leader who coordinates referrals. If you or someone you know could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, you may talk with him. (364-4525) If you want to refer someone else, be sure you get his or her permis sion first. Take advantage of this important care ministry in our congregation!
NOTES FROM ERMA JEAN ABOUT OLDER ADULT MINISTRY AUGUST, 2011
IMMANUEL LUTHERAN SCHOOL........ . I, (Erma jean), as a member of the School Board and an "old-timer", often get questions from the Leisure Lutherans and others - questions about our school which is a very vital segment of Immanuel's total ministry. I hear questions such as: What is the enrollment in our school? Which grades do we provide?
Does the school provide a hot lunch program? Does the school charge a tuition fee to attend? How many teachers do we have? Classes have been held in the present school building since January, 1960. The building is also used on Sunday mornings for Sunday school and Bible Class. • Enrollments seem to be coming in every day this summer. At last count it was 54. • Classes are provided for children in Pre-Kindergarten through 7th grade. • A hot lunch program is provided each school day, supplied by MS&T's Chartwell Food Services at a minimal cost. It is hoped we will get volunteers again this year from among the Leisure Lutherans, and other congregational members (2 each day) to serve the lunch and take care of the cleanup. • Yes, the School does charge a tuition fee ($2,695 per child, per year). Some of our families find it difficult to come up with the full cost of tuition; yet want a Christian education for their children. A Tuition Assistance Fund has been estabished for those who feel the need for this assistance. This fund is fed by gifts, memorials, and fundraisers. • Mr. Jonothan Pickelmann declined our Call to be the Principal of the school. The School Board, feeling it was too late to extend another call from the field, asked Sammy Elliott, 3 rd and 4th grade teacher, to serve as the School Principal, beginning August 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. During that time, the School Board will continue the calling process for a more permanent resolution. We are pleased Sammye was willing to take on this added responsibility. Needed: A teacher for the 5, 6, and 7th grade classroom. Applications may be picked up at the School. We also have several applications already in for the Pre-Kindergarten class. Cindy Fish is the Kindergarten teacher; Sue Burgdorf teaches grades 1 and 2, and Sammye Elliott teaches grades 3and 4. WHAT CAN WE AS LEISURE LUTHERANS DO TO HELP??? • Your prayers and support are greatly appreciated. • Volunteer to coordinate the lunch program. Or, choose one day a week to help serve lunches. • Adopt one or more of the children; act as a grandparent; read to them; have lunch together. • Contribute to the Tuition Assistance Fund. LEISURE LUTHERANS - KEEP THIS DATE IN MIND:
Friday, July 29 th - We will meet at the church at 4:00 p.m. to go to St. James; eat at Country Bob's at
4:30 p.m.; then to St. John Lutheran, at 6:30 to see and hear Mr. Walter Plant, a blind, Gospel Singer who also plays 3 different keyboards. We will carpool. Or, you can meet us there. Have you signed up?
August Birthdays
News from our school
N
Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ! I am pleased to be serving as interim principal for the 2011-2012 school year. As with all new journeys, there will be many joys, and there will be many obstacles and challenges to overcome. When I felt God leading me in this direction, I was apprehensive. Words from Joshua assured me to "Be strong and courageous ... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:6, 9) Our school enrollment stands at 54. If you know anyone of school age who might be interested in attending, please don't hesitate to have them contact the school. We have a large calling in front of us as we reach out to the community in sharing His Word and love with the families we come into contact with. We are in the process of hiring a Pre-K teacher, Before and After School Care workers, and a teacher for grades 5-7. Please pray for God's guidance on the interviews and decisions on who He would have to serve for this coming year. Many tasks will be set before us at ILS. If you would like to volunteer in any way, please contact me or the school office. As Chartwelis caters to us again, we will need volunteers to serve lunches and someone to coordinate the lunch program. Extra office help in the afternoons is also needed. I am looking forward to serving the school in this capacity, as it has definitely become my "home away from home." Please pray for guidance, wisdom, patience, and endurance as I continue to serve the Lord at Immanuel Lutheran School. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." Jer. 29:11

LUTHERAN HOUR TOPICS for AUGUST August 7 "Overcoming Life's Fears, By Faith!" Matthew 14:22-33 When storms come, when fears arise, we often turn, wrongly, to our own resources instead of looking in faith to Jesus. He even walks on water to rescue those who are sinking. August 14 'Who Belongs in God's House?" Isaiah 56:6-7 Who belongs to the house of the Lord? Those who respond to God's unique invitation, in the person and work of Jesus. August 21 "The Most Important Question For Your Life!" Matthew 16:13-20 Jesus poses life's most important question: "Who do YOU say that I am?" The right answer, given by grace through faith, connects us to God and empowers our walk with Him. August 28 "Life Without Regret" Matthew 16:26 Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus The risen Redeemer is God's promise that the day of judgment will not be one of regret for those who trust in Him. These programs are broadcast each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on radio station KTTR-1490 AM and 99.7 FM. Speaker: Rev. Gregory Seltz
Lutheran Church Extension Fund As summer ends, children will be returning to Lutheran elementary and secondary schools to continue and further their education. Did you know that Lutheran Church Extension Fund has provided funds to thousands of school and early childhood programs in our Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod? These funds provide place and space for Christ-centered education programs. Call1-800-THE-LCEF (843-5233) or visit www.lcef.org for more information on how you can support these ministries as well.
