Debra Finney is the EEOC’s Memphis District Outreach & Education Manager. Her 35 years of experience with the EEOC as an Investigator and in her current position make her uniquely qualified to discuss the laws enforced by EEOC. Debra’s jurisdictional areas include Arkansas, Tennessee and North Mississippi. She enjoys her position as Outreach and Education Manager because she travels the district, and the country, interacting with stakeholder groups. She not only educates the audience on the laws enforced by EEOC but provides practical application and tips. A popular speaker at many conferences in and outside of the Memphis district, she engages her audiences with a casual, yet informative, style. In addition to her duties in the Memphis District, she is a frequent speaker at national training conferences and is a trainer on national training projects, both internal and external. Her many travels for work have afforded her an opportunity to explore two other passions; BBQ and blues, which conveniently go hand in hand.

To better serve our membership, the Advancement Series has been retooled and rebranded, “HR X ssentials”. Material will aid HR Assistants and other who benefit from fundamental skills and knowledge will be presented. This offers mentoring opportunities that are critical to employee development. It meets for 3 hours on the third Thursday of the month, beginning March 17. All programs have been pre-certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) for 3 HRCI certification credits.

DURATION: 8:30 to 11:30 am, 3-hour weekday sessions FEE: HRMA Members: Both Modules: $120 or $65 per module. Non-members: Both Modules: $165 or $75 per module. IMPACT ON BUSINESS OF MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION IN ARKANSAS Medical marijuana will be on the ballot in November. Should this pass, there are things that will need to be considered, such as policies, accommodations, risk management and more. To address these issues, there will be a special session of experts prior to our regular October 6 monthly meeting from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Program fees include both programs and lunch.

The Effects of Marijuana and the National Scene Jeff Sims, C-SAPA, C-SI a’TEST Consultants Mr. Sims has lobbied for several substance abuse prevention industry related causes., He has testified as a government expert witness on drug testing issues during a 2005 U.S. House of Representatives oversight investigation hearing.

Marijuana the Drug and its Effects on the Body Greg Bledsoe, M.D. Surgeon General of Arkansas Dr. Bledsoe is a board certified Emergency Medicine physician. In January 2015, Dr. Bledsoe was appointed as the Surgeon General for the state of Arkansas by Governor Asa Hutchinson. After completing medical school and residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Dr. Bledsoe spent five years on faculty in the Johns Hopkins Department of Emergency Medicine completing a two-year fellowship in International Emergency Medicine and a Masters in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

She served two consecutive six-year terms on the Arkansas Alcohol and Drug Abuse Coordinating Council (appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Arkansas Legislature) and, for her service on this Council, was awarded the “Arkansas Certificate of Merit” by the Governor.

Teresa Roark, CEAP Ouachita County Medical Center Teresa Roark is Director of Mental Health Services for Ouachita County Medical Center in Camden, Arkansas. She holds various certifications including Advanced Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor and is certified as a Substance Abuse Professional. She has 30 years in the field of substance abuse counseling and human services. Ms. Roark conducts training throughout Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana on Reasonable Suspicion, Alcohol/Drug Training and Employee Assistance.

VOLUNTEER The Human Resource Management Association of Arkansas, Inc., is accepting nominations for openings on the 2017 Board of Directors. Elections will be held in the month of Ocboter and the Board will take office on January 1, 2014. The Board will serve under the direction of 2017 President, Belinda Horton, PHR, SHRM-CP. The Board will consist of Practitioner members who are HRCI certified, or who have a designation that is earned from an institution that certifies professionals working in a related area. (A list of qualifying applicants can be found on page 5 of this newsletter.) You may submit all nominations to the HRMA Office by September 23. The deadline for nominations is September 9. Self-nomination is encouraged. Elections will take place in October. Open positions are:

Individuals who are primarily responsible for assisting with or executing one or more human resource management functions for employees of the Practitioner’s employer. Membership is non-transferable. Practitioner members have the right to vote, and they may hold office in HRMA if certified.

PROPRIETOR:

Individuals who are not human resource practitioners, but who are responsible for the HR function in a small business. These individuals are not employed by companies who provide commodities or personnel which support human resource functions for companies other than their own.

Individuals who are compensated, or whose employer is compensated, to provide commodities or personnel which support human resource functions for companies other than their own. Companies of Associate members may purchase a maximum of 4 memberships for their employees. Each membership must be assigned to a specific employee, but other employees of that company may attend HRMA functions in their place at the member price. Assigned employees may be replaced by new assignees up to once per membership per year. Associate members may not vote or hold office in HRMA.

 HRMA BOOT CAMP HRMA provides 2 Boot Camps annually. Each 1-day seminar provides information to supervisors and managers who have had little or no training. Team leaders, supervisors and managers, aspiring and soon-to-be-promoted supervisors, should attend.

 SEMINARS To keep our members up-to-date, seminars on hot topics are offered as the need arises.
