Thank you so much for supporting our jog-a-thon and book fair fundraisers! It is because of your support that we are able to provide the “extra” things that help make school and learning a fun experience. We have been able to reward our Honor Roll students with an ice cream party for the end of the quarter last year and cookies and hot chocolate for our Honor Roll students the first quarter of this year! We have some other wonderful projects that are being planned as we go into next year. Have a wonderful and restful vacation. Spend time with your children, remember….the best present is our presence in their lives. See you next year! P.S. If you are interested in serving on our PTSA board for the 2013/2014 school year please contact me. J.H. Hull PTSA President, Eva Blada

Principal’s Message November is usually thought of as a month of “Thanks” and I have many things for which I am thankful. I am surrounded daily by caring professionals, enthusiastic students, and interested and informed parents. I have been blessed through the many relationships that I have been privileged to develop here at J.H. Hull. I would like to thank all the great parents, teachers, and students who have been contributing to our success. Our Student Council has done a tremendous job in fundraising, organizing school events, and creating a true Hawk spirit here on campus. Thank you to the teacher leaders: Jackie Ryan, Summer Koepp, and Barbara Colclasure for their guidance. The PTSA has been active raising money for school events through a variety of fundraising activities. Not to mention, the hours volunteered to plan and organize all of the various programs. The many great things going on at J. H. Hull would not be possible without our PTSA! I want to thank our Librarian/Media Tech, Glenda Simpson, for organizing and facilitating our very successful Hull Book Fair. All of Glenda’s, teacher’s, parent’s, and student’s hard work made this truly a great event. In addition, thank you to Ron Ambro and his student experts who made “Color Me Hull” a wonderful experience for our parents, students, and community members. I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate and recognize the following teachers for receiving ExxonMobil Pegasus Grants: Kim Gauna and Megan Wareham – “Math Has Serious Problems” -- $2783.05 Robert Nelson – “Alice in Computerland” -- $3904.99; “STEMS Computer Programming” -- $3870.00 Ron Ambro – “Alternative Energies and the Environment: A Curriculum of Renewable Energy Sources For Project Lead The Way STEM classes -- $3888.82 “VEX Robotics: A Robotics Curriculum for Project Lead The Way STEM Classes” -$3999.49 A huge thank you goes out to Robinson Helicopter – they have donated $15000 to our and Torrance High School’s Project Lead The Way STEM Program – this will further advance what we can do and how we can expand next year. Some additional upcoming events include: our Winter Dance on December 14th from 6:00 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, and the Winter Music Concert on December 18th starting at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Thanks again to all the volunteers! I wish everyone in the J.H. Hull family a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season. Barry Lafferty Principal

Student/Program Highlights (Winter 2012-2013) First, let me acknowledge several students who participated in two very exciting programs over the summer: 8th grader, David Alejandrino who participated in the Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp”. This was an all expense paid two-week summer camp that was held at the University of Southern California. It was an academic, residential camp that emphasized increasing students’ mathematics/science skills, introducing them to what college is like, and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. The experience included classes in a variety of areas and field trips. 8th grade students, Sierra Miral, Amber Sylvester, and Michelle Kaku attended Tech Trek, a math/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and selfconfidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in math, science and related fields. All sleeping, eating, instructional and recreational facilities are located on a university campus where camps are held. Tech Trek is designed to provide every camper with exposure to all core subjects taught, as well as a selection of rotating labs designed to explore individual specialties more deeply. Hands-on activities in core classes, rotating labs and field trips at Tech Trek camps help to make math and science fun as well as educational. Instructors include credentialed middle school teachers and women currently engaged professionally in math, science or technology fields. Evening programs could include astronomy, engineering, marine biology, and environmental studies to enhance the learning experience and introduce students to a variety of potential career areas. We will be beginning our new Hull Math Club/Team. Students are recommended by their math teachers and the club will be meeting every week after school. Some goals for this club: to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics; to introduce important mathematical concepts; to teach major strategies for problem solving; to develop mathematical flexibility for problem solving; to foster creativity and ingenuity; and to provide for the joy and thrill of meeting challenges. In addition, this club will be participating in math competitions with other middle schools in the spring. In January or February, Mrs. Koepp, several teachers, and I will take over 45 students to U.C.L.A.’s “I’m Going to College” program. This program is the nation’s largest collegiate community outreach program. This provides our students the opportunity to experience a major university sporting event, we hope to inspire them to continue their education and pursue college opportunities in their future, as well as reward their current efforts and achievements. A pre-game College Fair will feature U.C.L.A departments for question and answer sessions, carnival games, student-athlete autographs, to name a few. We hope to plan a trip to U.S.C as well. Planned for the winter and spring: a number of Parent Education Nights that will include: Homework Without Stress – Goal Setting and Independence, College/Careers, Parenting and Self-Esteem, Motivation/Follow-up – more specific information and dates to follow.

Attention 8th Grade Parents! Now that the year has gotten off to a good start and the holidays are almost upon us, it will soon be time for our 8th graders to get ready for graduation! In the second half of the year there will be several things going on such as a parent meeting (in January), ordering 8th grade t-shirts, the panoramic picture, field day (on the next to last day of school), and graduation. The year-end activities require lots of help on the part of the parents. Food donations, help setting up/tearing down, and running fun games for our kids are just a few examples. The best way to be kept informed of these upcoming events would be to have your email address added to the 8th grade list. Please contact me at [email protected] or just print this, fill out the attachment, and turn it into the office. Thanks in advance and I look forward to working with you to make the Class of 2013 a memorable time! Michelle Schluchter 8th grade parent rep

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR Thank you all for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair that took place November 12th-16th. Students enjoyed coming to the fair during their Language Arts classes, during snack and lunch or after school. We also had a good turn out, given the unstable weather, at Friday night's event. The book fair was partnered with the Color -Me-Hull and Food Truck Family night. The book fair raised $1000 for the library. This money is used to purchase new books for all students to enjoy. Several raffles were held for the students to enjoy. Joseph Ponce won the "Guess the number of Peppermints"; Alyssa Campbell won the "Guess the number of Chocolates"; Four students won $10 Book Fair Voucher towards the purchase of a book. Those winners were Vanessa Campos, Julia Lopes, Stephanie Elizarde, and Madison Miyake. Imani Jolivette, Johnathan Matthews, Daniel Murillo and Rohni Patel won "homework or lunch line" passes. Special thanks to all the teachers, PTSA and family volunteers that helped make this event a success.

Volunteer Guidelines and Procedures Would you like to volunteer in the classroom or at a school event; or chaperone a field trip? First, you will need to complete a Volunteer Application/Agreement form, which are available in the office. Once completed, volunteer names are forwarded to the district office for Megan’s Law background check. Second, you will need to provide documentation of a current tuberculosis (TB) test. Please plan to complete all necessary forms as soon as possible, as these steps can take some time.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! Seeing parents volunteer at school helps children realize that there is a bond between home, school and community.

Barry Lafferty, Principal
