HSC TRIAL EXAMINATION PROCEDURES 2016 PREPARING FOR THE EXAMINATION 1. Dates and times: Check the times carefully. Post the timetable in a prominent place at home. Ensure that you are in the examination room at the scheduled time for the examination. No extension is given for late arrivals. 2. Equipment: • Full school uniform is to be worn to and from examinations. • Equipment is to be carried into the examination room in a clear plastic container (protector, bag or pencil case). • Borrowing of equipment from another student at any time during, or upon completion, of an examination is not allowed. • Use of correction fluid is not permitted at IGS. Ensure that: 1. You have your own writing materials, stapler, eraser, calculator and any other equipment specific to the exam. Failure to have this equipment may result in being unable to answer parts of the examination. 2. you have checked with your class teacher in regards to what equipment is needed to complete an examination paper 3. You prepare the night before for the coming examination. A basic list should include 2 blue or black pens, 2 pencils, pencil sharpener, eraser, ruler, stapler and spare staples. Writing paper will be supplied. 4. You do not use red, green, or purple pens to write your answers, unless specifically requested to do so. 5. Only sheets of writing paper and essential equipment may be on your desk during an examination. School bags, notes, folders, books, pencil cases etc, must be placed in your locker. Supervisors will check your materials before the examination. 6. Mobile phones and food are NOT brought into the examination room. 7. You go to the bathroom before the examination begins. 8. You check your pockets before you enter the examination room. Students who are found to be in possession of notes or other unauthorised material in an examination room will have their papers cancelled; that is, receive a zero mark. 9. NOTE: leave all bags in your locker during the examination times. College backpacks are to be brought to school during examination times – NO OTHER BAGS ARE ACCEPTABLE ENTERING THE EXAMINATION 1. Students are to line up in alphabetical order outside the specified examination room 10 minutes before each examination. Have in your hand only your examination equipment in a transparent holder. Follow the instructions given to proceed to the examination room. Enter in silence as you must not communicate either verbally or non-verbally with one another once you have entered the examination room. DURING THE EXAMINATION 1. Reading time (if given): Do not touch any pens, pencils, equipment or calculator. Do not write anything during this time. Read all questions carefully, noting any that allow you a choice. Work out how much time you can spend on each question. 2. Writing time: Before you start to write, read the question again, underlining key words. 3. You should ensure that your answers and work sheets are not visible to other students. 4. Dictionaries and English Decoding Devices are not permitted in the examination unless otherwise stated. 5. If you finish early, check your answers thoroughly to see if you can improve them. You will not be permitted to leave the examination room early. 6. It is your responsibility to ensure that all parts of a completed exam are handed up. If a section, question or part of a question is not attempted, you are to indicate this by writing not attempted and your name on the paper. 7. Students who distract other students will be issued with a behaviour warning. If poor behaviour continues, the student will be escorted from the examination room, which could result in a zero mark for that task. 8. ANY STUDENT FOUND CHEATING OR ATTEMPTING TO CHEAT WILL BE SEVERELY PENALISED. 9. Exam time: Hints for effective studying www.reachout.com Boy Deserves Fruit). Other people find more visual tools more useful, Eg mind maps or tree diagrams.

Study area - Having a good study area can make a huge difference to how well you learn. Study in a well-lit, quiet area, away from noises and people in the house. If this is impossible, it might be better to study at the library. Make sure your desk is tidy and organised - it means you can concentrate on studying and learning, not trying to find information.

Take regular breaks - Getting up, moving around and away from your desk at least every 50 minutes for 10 minutes makes you concentrate and learn better.

Find out about the exam – Find out what format the exam will take i.e. Are the questions in essay, short answer or multiple choice format? Is the exam open book or closed book? Knowing how the exam is marked and what proportion of your total mark it’s worth might also be helpful. To do lists - Make a to-do list before each study session. Breaking tasks down into small, manageable tasks will make it less overwhelming. Cross them off as you go.

Revise and learn (don't just re-read) - Sometimes reading through notes doesn't result in learning or understanding. Include the following in revising each topic:

• • • •

vocabulary, technical terms definitions summaries of points formulae, rules, diagrams, charts ability to understand relationships.

Avoid procrastination - Procrastination is when you do everything else but the task you need to do. It is normal to procrastinate a little. However too much procrastination can just add to your stress and can result in you not giving yourself enough time to prepare. Managing your time and setting realistic goals for each study session can be helpful ways to avoid procrastinating and make tasks seem less overwhelming.

Past exam papers - Ask your teacher for past exam papers. They can be a useful insight into what your exam will be like and can also provide a guide for what you know and the areas in which you need help. If possible, practice some under exam conditions and get your teacher to mark them. Study groups - Forming a studying group can be a helpful way to revise your notes and work through past exam questions (it can also help you feel supported, keep you motivated and focused). If you have questions about your work, a study group may be a good place to have them answered. Ask your teacher if they know of anyone else interested in studying with other people.

Make a study timetable – Write down all the things you need to do each day of the week, and how long you need for each, including time for enough sleep, relaxation, and exercise. Find out the date of each exam and work out a study timetable leading up to them. Include tests that will help you identify gaps in your knowledge. This can give you some direction and help you focus on what to study each week or day.

Switch the phone or email off! - If you find that you are being distracted by the phone or emails, it might help to put the answering machine on or get others in the house to take messages for a while. You can always ring people back later.

Use your study periods - Studying in the school library during your study periods gives you access to lots of information available on the reference shelves. Some material, such as sample solutions, often can’t be taken out of the library or can be too long to photocopy.

Wallpaper - Write down key concepts you have to learn on small sheets of paper followed by examples of how they are used. Post these sheets around your house. It helps with remembering things like equations, quotes and foreign languages. Ask lots of questions of your teachers or tutor - Your teacher or tutor can help if you are having trouble developing a study routine or need help with understanding subjects or a particular topic. Asking for help doesn't mean you're a failure - it's smart to tap into their experience and knowledge to help you perform better. Keep going back to them if you're still unsure or you have more questions. Know your preferred learning style - Some people work better using text based memory tools, like acronyms (E.g. ROYGBIV - colours of the rainbow; acrostics E.g. Every Good
