PRESIDENT’S REPORT What a wonderful way to reflect on twenty years of Hockey Qld as I write my last annual report as President. I have seen the organisation grow and grow since I joined the Hockey Qld Board in 1996 and it gives me no small measure of satisfaction to see not only the progress made, but the achievements of our players, officials and associations, as well as the friendships developed and grown. There is no doubt that Hockey Qld has maintained its ranking as one of the premier hockey states. It has succeeded in this because of the strong people talent we have throughout the state. Each local association has been able to customise its hockey offering according to local and available resources – players, officials, administrators, volunteers, parents, supporters and facilities. We rely on this infrastructure to produce our successes, and we need to ensure that new initiatives introduced at local, state and national level can be adapted to suit local conditions. We know that one size just will not fit all. The challenge for us all is managing the work required with a mix of local volunteers and paid labour – not always easy, especially when the costs have to be passed on to the players. Of course, with such a large state, communication is always a challenge – and has been seen to be so ever since I joined the Hockey Qld Board. CEO Louisa Begley and her staff have increased the number of visits to associations to ensure better sharing of ideas and activities. Greater use of media such as FaceBook is being made, and the CEO sends out , via email, a monthly update of activities, as well as a Board report after each Board meeting. Twice yearly Member Forums are also held – their benefit would be enhanced if discussion papers were able to be circulated by associations and/or Hockey Qld beforehand, to enable local discussion and time to address any further questions. Issues with player and spectator behaviour have increased over the time I have been on the Board and I do not know whether it is because we as a society do not respect authority or because there are more ill-disciplined people in the world. I will leave that with you all to consider.

Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2015 Page 7

In November last year we celebrated twenty years of Hockey Qld together with induction of athletes into our Hockey Qld Hall of Fame. It was an opportunity to acknowledge how the sustained success of Hockey Qld over the twenty years is a testament to the many passionate and committed Queenslanders that form our broader hockey community. Consider the hosting of the 1999 Champions Trophy and the 1999 Golden Oldies Hockey Festival, which were major achievements, and when we see the many other International series, National and State Championships that are held throughout the State every year we can be justly proud. I would sincerely like to thank each and every one of you, but particularly past Presidents Jim Quaite and Ken McElligott and former CEO Garry West-Bail who helped to get us to where we are today. Elsewhere in this report you will be able to find the details of player achievements, team successes, accreditations, awards and accomplishments – please continue and keep up the good work. I would like to close by thanking all the members of the Hockey Qld Board, together with Louisa Begley and her staff at Hockey Qld, with all of whom I have had a great working relationship. And last of all, to the greater hockey community, thank you for your efforts and support and friendship.

Dr Karin Walduck President Hockey Queensland

CEO’S REPORT At the AGM in November 2014, the members voted to change Hockey Queensland’s financial year and as a result this annual report covers the period from October 2014 to 31 December 2015. On reflection, so much has happened during this time it was difficult to identify the most significant successes, challenges and triumphs facing our sport in Queensland. Our focus again this year was on increasing participation numbers and sustaining our programs. The success of the “Get into Hockey” marketing campaign was evident in the increased number of activities that occurred around the state and the additional interest from local media and marketing agencies. The marketing campaign is implemented with a two-prong approach – a state-wide brand awareness campaign which promoted hockey and a customised local campaign which coordinated local recruitment activities and promoted the regional association and club environment.

More specific information on these initiatives is provided in the Game Development section of this report but here is a snapshot of some of the outcomes in 2015:  4% increase in player registrations  2108 Hookin2Hockey participants (66% of target) and 2523 Under 9 players (91% of target)  2463 16-20 year old players (95% of target)  415 coach and official accreditations (86% of target)  Delivering hockey programs into more than 50 remote and indigenous communities in North Queensland and expanding the program to communities in south west and central Queensland Hockey Queensland would like to acknowledge the support of the Queensland Government, the Australian Government, Hockey Australia and our sponsors, which has enabled Hockey Queensland to continue to provide these participation initiatives.

The results this year were significant. 13% of players registering with Hockey Queensland were new to hockey. Overall, Hockey Queensland’s participation numbers grew by 4% which is positive in a climate where organised sport is facing a decline and there is a greater shift to more recreational and social activities. In addition to the marketing campaign, Hockey Queensland administered a number of activities aimed to increase participation. These included grant funding to members associations to support grassroots participation initiatives; coach, umpire and technical official accreditation courses and mentoring, system development to link into the Sporting Schools program and program expansion of inclusive, remote and indigenous hockey programs.

Throughout the year, I again visited a number of member associations. My travels included: Mt Isa, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Cairns, Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Ipswich, Hervey Bay, Gold Coast, Warwick and Tweed Border Hockey Associations. Thank you all for welcoming me and inviting me to share in some of your local events. I also appreciate the many candid conversations about the issues, challenges and opportunities you face administering the sport. I hope we can continue to work together to address these issues and continue to support each other in our journey to grow hockey. In this year’s annual report, we have included a section which highlights the activities and successes of our member associations. Reading through this section, there is a sense of pride and amazement at the extent of activity associations undertake not only in administering their regional programs and competitions but also managing their facilities. It is evident the growth of our sport in Queensland

will be challenged by the accessibility to quality facilities and it is encouraging to report the considerable investment that has been made into upgrading facilities this past year. I again thank all those volunteers and staff who work in our Associations and clubs for the wonderful and often thankless job you do to keep the sport alive and growing in our communities. It is often difficult to find an opportunity to celebrate all the great things that contribute to the success of the sport each year, so in 2015, Hockey Queensland created a “celebration of hockey in Queensland” around its major event – the Super League competition. Significantly this event was held during the Queensland week celebrations and the program included: • A Volunteer Thank You Function - to honour and acknowledge all our wonderful umpires and technical officials who give their time to ensure our state championships and trials are convened at a high standard • Queensland Members Forum – an opportunity for all member associations to share ideas and discuss issues • Annual Awards Ceremony – to honour our successful players, coaches and officials • VIP Function – to honour our past players and acknowledge the support of our sponsors and key stakeholders I would like to acknowledge the support of Hon Bill Byrne (Minister for Sport), Di Farmer (Local State MP), Terri Butler (Local Federal MP), Rob Kirkwood from Polytan (major sponsor of Super League) and all the current and past players who attended the celebration and whose support continues to ensure hockey’s success in Queensland. As we move into 2016 and the final year of our current strategic plan, it is worthwhile reflecting on the changes and progress we have made in each of our four key program areas: Growing our Sport (Game Development), Building our Talent (High Performance), Strengthening our Network (Member Development) and Sustaining our Future (Organisational Development). Overall, Hockey Queensland is tracking well to deliver its three-year outcomes under this strategic plan. These achievements would not have been possible without the combined effort of a large number of people. Throughout the year, a number of changes were made to the operating structure of Hockey Queensland. These changes included Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2015 Page 9

implementing a High Performance Advisory Group at the operational level and new Board sub-committee (the Integrity Committee) to oversee Member Protection Policies, player welfare, judiciary processes and codes of conduct. It also included a review of the operating roles of the Technical Operating Committee, Umpire Committee, Indoor Committee and Women’s Masters Committee. Thank you to the Chairs and members of these committees – your time, advice and support to the operations of Hockey Queensland is very much valued and contribution to the success of Hockey Queensland’s programs is significant. Hockey Queensland also celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, marking the amalgamation of Queensland Men’s and Women’s Hockey Associations. There are many people who were involved in the amalgamation process and the shaping of Hockey Queensland in that time and to acknowledge all those who contributed, Hockey Queensland is printing a commemorative book which will be distributed in April, 2016. I would like to acknowledge Cam Vale and his staff at Hockey Australia for their support and leadership and to the broader national hockey network for their ongoing commitment to achieving a whole-of-sport environment. To the Board, thank you for your support, time and commitment to address the challenges and opportunities Hockey Queensland faced this year. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Karin Walduck for her tireless energy, commitment and passion she has given in her role as President and although you step down from this role, we hope you continue to be a presence in our hockey community. Finally, I would like to thank all the staff who have made such a great contribution to the achievements of Hockey Queensland this year. Whilst we continue to face many challenges, we have also “drag-flicked” many goals and I look forward to continuing on this journey with you all.

Growing our Sport Game Development was again a key focus area for Hockey Queensland this year. Through support from the Queensland State Government Sport and Recreation Department, Hockey Queensland continued to provide “participation funding” grants to all member associations to support participation initiatives within their regions. In the last financial year, Hockey Queensland provided $157,000 in grants to associations which resulted in the following successful outcomes:  385 School Visits and school activities which involved 36,050 participants  500 Come and Try clinics conducted around the state  2,380 participants in Hookin2Hockey programs run in 19 locations across the state  22 Inclusive hockey programs conducted around the state  An additional 361 participants accredited as coaches, umpires or technical officials Under the direction of Daniel Egan, Hockey Queensland also implemented a number of additional programs and initiatives to support the growth and retention of players in our network. These programs included: • Implementing a school-based hockey program • Expanding our Remote and Indigenous Hockey Programs to include south west and central Queensland • Partnering with Lifestream to support and develop inclusive hockey programs • Developing a system to support sporting schools initiative

Building our Talent Hockey Queensland continues to maintain its presence and successful contribution to the national high performance landscape. Not only are we successful in maintaining 25% Queensland representation on our National teams but Hockey Queensland also contributes significantly to the number of officials appointed to national and international tournaments.

Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2015 Page 11

The highlights in 2015 included Gold Medal performances by our AHL Men’s (Blades) and AHL Women’s (Scorchers) teams, our U18 Women’s team and our U15 Women’s team. Hockey Queensland’s Indoor Hockey program began to reap rewards with a very successful national indoor hockey campaign with Gold Medal performance from our Women’s Open Indoor Team, two Silver medals from our U21 Men’s and U18 Women’s teams and a Bronze for our U15 Men’s team. In total 50% of our teams ended with a medal and all but one team finished in the top 4. Hockey Queensland continues to face the challenge of ensuring our talent pathway programs are implemented according to the Talent Pathway Framework and all our regions have access to support to develop their players, coaches and officials. The major activities undertaken in 2015 to support the talent pathway plan includes: • The appointment of Barry Vohland as Regional Program Manager to support the regional network of coaching directors and development officers • Reviewing our U13 and U15 state championships and piloting education and coaching programs for players, parents and coaches within these championships • Implementing the Under 17 development camp which included teams from South Australia, ACT and Victoria • The provision of Professional Development for Regional Coaching Directors and state coaches which included participation in trials and mentoring, sessions on inclusive hockey programs and access to Advanced Coaching course

Strengthening our Network Hockey Queensland acknowledges the contribution our club and association network continues to provide the growth and development of our sport. Governance continues to be one of the major areas of concern across the network and given the transient nature of clubs and associations’ executive members it is difficult to make the necessary changes and implement new processes and systems during the season.

During 2015, Hockey Queensland supported associations through the following initiatives: • Provide support and resourcing to improve governance practices tailored to specific Association’s needs • Strengthened communication between Hockey Queensland and member associations through teleconferences, monthly updates and face-to-face meetings • Staff visits to Associations to work through specific issues • Member Forum topics included governance review, judiciary processes, database training and access to external organisations to support constitutional reviews and strategic planning Congratulations to Maryborough Hockey Association on being awarded “Association of the Year” for your outstanding role as host of the Women’s Masters State Championship and 30 year celebrations and new initiatives to increase participation.

Sustaining our Future The focus this period has been on developing a state-wide strategic facility plan, reviewing Hockey Queensland’s financial model (including the management of Colmslie Recreational Reserve), internal organisational re-structure and continuing to work with GOLDOC on securing the best legacy outcomes for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Compared to other states, Queensland has considerably less numbers of synthetic pitches. Internationally, hockey is played on synthetic surfaces and whilst grass fields remain the ideal surface to introduce hockey, the development of skills for many players requires the transition from grass to a synthetic surface. The challenge facing the sport is ensuring greater accessibility to synthetic surfaces whilst maintaining an affordable cost for players. The state-wide strategic facilities plan is the first stage in the process to determine the priorities for new and upgraded facilities. The second stage will be to develop a maintenance plan for existing facilities and the third stage will develop potential business models for sustaining facilities in the future. In summary the major achievements for this program area are: • Identifying the future leasing structure of the Colmslie Recreational Reserve • Developed a draft state-wide facilities plan • Implemented strong financial processes and policies with strategic financial reporting frameworks • Formalisation of a new entity to manage the Commonwealth Games hockey venues Hockey Queensland again met all its desired targets for sponsorship and marketing. This could not have been achieved without the continued support and expertise of the team from Major League Marketing. Thank you Jason, Christie, Kath and all the staff who assist us to identify and maintain our relationships with our sponsors, create and grow our “Get into Hockey” campaign and ensure all our supporters are tuned in to hockey via our social media channels.

REMOTE AND INDIGENOUS HOCKEY PROGRAM 2015 has been a big year for Hockey Queensland’s Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program (RIHP) with the expansion of the program into new exciting regions and the inception of a new generation of young RIHP team members. The fundamental purpose of the RIHP program is to develop and deliver hockey programs that lead and grow participation, pathways and positive social changes in remote and Indigenous communities of Queensland. In 2015 the program was delivered to a total of 7819 participants with an encouraging 4188 of these participants being women and girls and a positive 3358 identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The program now covers the largest geographical area in its history with delivery spanning as far north as Bamaga (Cape York), as far west as Charleville, together with many remote communities in between including the Indigenous community of Cherbourg situated in Central Queensland.

We are equally excited to announce that Kazzia Lammon has come on as the new RIHP program Ambassador. Within this position Kazzia will act as a mentor and role model specifically to young women and girls who will participate in RIHP. Growing up in Ayr, North Queensland, Kazzia used to travel 90 km each weekend to play hockey, the sport she loves. A current member of the QAS program Kazzia has represented the Australian A (Australian Development) and toured China and Japan. In her excitement Kazzia had this to say, “I love that I am given the opportunity to be able to share my story with young Indigenous kids and perhaps act as a role model in their lives, influencing them to make the right decisions and choices so that they can succeed.” Both appointments are a testament to the RIHP program and encouraging signs for the sustainable future of the program. Hockey Queensland would like to thank all of our partners, local community members and stakeholders, and we would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the generous support of the Queensland Government and Federal Government. Daniel Egan Operations Manager

The future of the program is looking strong with the exciting appointment of 2 new members to the team in Lewis Dexter and Kazzia Lammon. Based in Bundaberg, Lewis was introduced to hockey through school and progressed through club hockey to represent the Queensland Blaze. Lewis completed a RIHP traineeship with Hockey Queensland and as a result was promoted to the role of RIHP Development Officer. In Describing the program Lewis had this to say, “The program provides participants with a similar pathway that I was given to participate in hockey, which they may not have had otherwise. My traineeship role left me with increased confidence, better time-management skills and an understanding of how to coordinate programs.” Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2015 Page 13

ASSOCIATION HIGHLIGHTS GYMPIE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Some of the major achievements/successes of the Gympie & District Hockey Association throughout 2015 would include winning the QLD U13 Boys Division 2 Title and the QLD Indoor Under 15 Women’s Division 2 Title. The Under 13 boys side dominated the round robin format and had clinched the title before taking the field in their last game. Another highlight would be the selection of 22 of our players, 7 for the very first time, in State Squads throughout the year and 3 of these players then going on to be selected in Australian Squads. We are very proud of this achievement as we are one of the smaller hockey regions within the state. The hosting of the 2015 QLD Over 35 Masters Men’s Titles was a huge success for our town with everyone loving our facilities and enjoying the hospitality throughout the 3 day event. We are very much looking forward to hosting the 2016 QLD Under 15 Women’s Titles in September this year.

development of players and members through programs including; Hookin2Hockey, minkey /modified players competition, The Edge and Little Edge - holiday development clinics, off season training and skills /development programs, umpire mentoring, tech officials courses and mentoring, the Hockey Academy, Qld Schools Cup, the Darling Downs Secondary Schools Cup, the primary schools Gala Day, schools program and Sporting Schools Program. Toowoomba Hockey was privileged to host the Southern Cross League in March and the Qld Open Men’s Championship in April. These events provided our players and members with opportunity to experience and watch competition at its best. Toowoomba Hockey Association finished the season on a high when we acknowledged and celebrated the great achievements as well as the commitment and successes of our players and clubs throughout the year at the End of Season Dinner.

The HBHA hosted a pre-nationals trial matches between the over 35’s and over 40’s in 2015 with members of the team spending time with the juniors.

A $300,000 lighting upgrade to our two artificial fields was revealed at our annual Open Day in February, with an official commissioning of the lights at the start of the 2015 season.

Toowoomba Hockey Association (THA) has continued to focus on development programs, aimed at players, coaches, umpires and technical officials yielding results at all levels in all areas of the association. The increased competiveness of our representative teams has led to more Toowoomba players participating at the state level. The continued improvement of depth and strength in our local competition is due to the continued support of our clubs and our very strong volunteer base, including our coaches, managers and umpires. The 2015 representative season has seen the hard work of previous years come to fruition. Our representative players have accepted the challenges and this is reflected in results across the board with 4 State divisional wins the U13 girl’s team A, U13 Girls B, The Open Men’s team (Eagles), and the Open Women (CHILL), and nine teams making the top four in there respective age groups. Representation of Toowoomba players at a state and national level saw over 68 players selected, TID to represent Queensland across all age groups this year, and 18 players across men and women were selected to represent Queensland at State Masters Championships. Toowoomba Hockey has organised and contributed to the

May saw Ipswich host the Men’s Masters Championships. There was some very competitive hockey on the fields and plenty of catching up on the side lines. Our wonderful Ipswich Hockey volunteers, alongside the Men’s Masters tournament committee, ensured that a great time was had by all the competitors, their families and friends. We also bid a fond farewell to Neil Shearer and his family as he moved on to a more family friendly working life and Sam Spry was appointed as our new RCD. Sam and her family had moved to the Ipswich area from the Northern Territory and thankfully survived their first cold Ipswich winter. June and July saw a busy time with the hosting of the Qld Primary School Championships, our annual Hook in2 Hockey Theme day, which was a brilliant Pirates and Princesses Day, and we also had a Blue weekend to fundraise for the Prostate Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue. We raised over $2700 which was donated to help these wonderful organisations.

Our junior season started with a “Bring a Friend” to training experiment, which worked well and we will be rolling it out again in 2016. We had 200 Hook in2 Hockey players enjoy our program and our junior girls teams increased in numbers. Our junior boys teams numbers were also slightly up on previous years. Our end of season carnival, which is free of charge to all our junior players, was a fun filled day of goodies and rides, and to finish the season with huge smiles from all the junior players is a great reward to all the hardworking club and association volunteers. As the end of the season came ever closer, we finally got our landscaping organised and terraced the area in front of our main field which provides extra seating options and was a sea of colour and umbrellas on grand final day. Ipswich Hockey was proud to have the Hockey Qld Volunteer of the year in Jan Walker. Jan has worked tirelessly to have indoor hockey up and running in an actual indoor environment. Margret Mantell & Steve Rogers also received awards at the City of Ipswich Sports Awards. Margret was the Volunteer of the Year and Steve the Official of the Year. With Ipswich being known as a rugby league town & the wonderful success of the Ipswich Jets in 2015, it was a pleasure to see Hockey triumphant in these categories.

GLADSTONE & DISTRICT HOCKEY ASSOCIATION HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2015 LIGHTENING 9S CARNIVAL The 9-a-side tournament was held early March, 2015, being new and exciting bringing something different to the hockey calendar. Team nominations were reasonably good for this weekend, with teams coming from Gladstone, Rockhampton and Maryborough. Mackay and Bundaberg clubs were invited though due to Mackay season starting on the same weekend, and Bundaberg clubs having other commitments they weren’t able to attend. The tournament was a huge success and will be held again in 2016. TEAMS AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Gladstone U18 Women won Division 2 State Championship in 2015. Open Women came second in Division 1. All Gladstone representative teams are in Division 1 or 2 which is a great achievement. SUCCESSFUL PLAYERS IN STATE NATIONAL TEAMS The following achievements were made from Gladstone Players:

The Grand Final in 2016 was played – for Women between Rockhamption Team – Wanderers and Gladstone Team – Meteors with Wanderers taking the title and for men Rockhampton Teams Wanderers and Rocky Souths with Wanderers taking the title as well. EMPLOYMENT OF RDO Gladstone & District Hockey have been successful in employing Regional Development Officer which has proven to be very successful. We have had an increase in our Rookey players, been able to achieve a number of members accredited for Level 1 Coaching, providing training for our State selected players.

JUNIOR DRESS UP NIGHT We held a Rookey Fun Night early in May (Friday the 8th). This was a great event which involved all Rookey-registered players, as well as new players from promotion through schools, as well as encouraging currently registered players to bring friends along as well. It was used as a come-and-try day as well as a celebration of our Rookey players. We roughly 100 kids attend, including approximately 25 new children which is fantastic. The focus wasn’t solely on hockey, but included fun games and competitions, a raffle, sausage sizzle, jumping castle and a movie themed dress up. Feedback was excellent from parents and coaches in particular, as well as the kids clearly having a wonderful time! We had plenty of helpers; a lot of juniors helping organize the activities and parents/coaches assisting with the BBQ and tickets and general oragnisation. Parents made it into a picnic type evening which was great to see. Many stayed on afterwards to watch senior games. I will certainly be looking to run another fun night this season! Though it took a fair bit of planning and effort it was well worth it!

AHL BLADES With seven player not training in Brisbane due to their Australian commitments, it set us some challenges that we had to overcome, so we decided to play a similar structure that is been played by the Australian team as this would make it an easier transition for all players. So all of our inter squad games revolved around those structures, and that gave the Brisbane based players the knowledge they needed. These games were videoed and sent to all players and I asked the Perth based players to provide feedback on players and playing structures. I felt this opened up the communication lines between the Brisbane and Perth players, this intern would keep the players in Perth up to date on our progress. To assist in this operation, it was really important to have a strong leadership group of Mark Knowles (c), Jamie Dwyer, Troy Elder, Matthew Swann. Mark Knowles was the captain of the team as he was the Game day leader, overall he saw individual groups and reported his thoughts to the coaching staff. In coaching a very successful team, sometimes there is that added pressure that is put on the athletes and coaching staff that we had to be successful again, this was something we as coaching staff never spoke about so we worked more on the process and outcomes. I think that every player contributed in some way in every game we played and it is every hard for me to identify one or two individuals that were our best. In a winning team it’s not just the individuals that win games, it’s in the preparation that is put in beforehand by players and by coaching staff. The program for 2016 AHL as per the Hockey Queensland High Performance plan, AHL Blades & Scorchers 12 weeks program (July - September). In this period I would like to see the squad play games against other States or maybe teams from other countries. These games would be used for us to prepare the 2016 AHL squad. With a number of players that may not be available in 2016 due to retirement or injuries from the Rio Olympics, we have to have a contingency plan in place if some players don’t play. Cost in anything we do is going to be an issue but we need to find ways around these costs. In 2015 we played inter squad games every Wednesday night, the games Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2015 Page 28

were invaluable in the selection of the team but these games didn’t push players to play at a higher level. Looking back on it I felt that most players in the inter squad games were playing OK but when 2 players from Perth came back to train with us you could see the difference. Mick Evans - QLD Blades Coach

AHL SCORCHERS Thank you for the opportunity to be the Head Coach of one of Australia’s Premier female domestic sporting teams. Having little to no previous involvement with the team, I would like to thank Des King and Brian Fitzpatrick for the insight and background into the individual players and the collective playing group. I would also like to thank the other Performance Enhancement Team that worked with the players during the preparation and at the Championships. Kim Tuckwell - Forwards Coach/Manager, Ben Currie – Physiotherapist, Marni Simpson – Video Analyst and previously mentioned Assistant Coach, Des King. Special mention to Marni Simpson who joined the group later in our preparation as a result of the unfortunate withdrawal of Nicki Taylor due to a family illness. Marni demonstrated advanced understanding of the video requirements, possess a high level work ethic and contributed to team dynamic and harmonious approach. Congratulations are extended to all the players involved in their successful campaign and becoming the 2015 AHL Champions. The preparation for this tournament was difficult and not ideal. With 9 players based in Perth and unavailable until the final week of our build up, all players need to be commended on the acceptance of this situation and the positive approach applied. This was critical to the team playing their best hockey towards the end of the tournament. The players also need to be commended on their availability and willingness to work with the two U/13 QLD teams that were also competing in Sydney. The joint training session with these two teams during the championships was very well handled by the Scorchers and I am sure will be a highlight for the U/13 athletes and drive them to reach the same level of achievement. To assist with the breakdown of the campaign, please see following dot points1. Preparation in Brisbane • As mentioned, player availability made this difficult for the collective group. • Large numbers of withdrawals from the selected squad made training numbers in Brisbane difficult. Special thanks to the Brisbane U/15 boys and Valley Senior men’s athletes that help with the training numbers and match situations Hockey Queensland Annual Report 2015 Page 29

• Thank you to other specialist coaches that worked with our group in the build up. Mathew Smith, Stephen Lambert, Angie Lambert, Nicky Taylor and the outstanding physiological preparation from David Watts and Technical assistance of Trish King. 2. Preparation in Sydney • Accommodation – o Staying in the Olympic Park precinct was a critical factor in the success of the team. Short travel times to training and matches, the ability to return to the hotel post game and then return to view later matches, made this ideal. Also the speed of being able to collect the coded video footage of our competitors increased the time the coaches had to scout opponents and plan for coming matches. o Staying in the western suburbs also contributed to the athlete’s ability to hockey detox on the nominated rest day. The Des King organised team trip to Cronulla meant that the entire team could get away from the hotel and the hockey environment and really free their heads from hockey for a day. The 40min bus trip to Cronulla also enhanced team cohesion and dynamic. o Having access to an indoor sports centre in the precinct also contributed to our game day preparation. The mid afternoon indoor cricket matches on days we had late matches, allowed us to spike the athletes heart rates and ready them for the evening games. • Playing Style – I introduced a new playing style for the team. The difficulty was having enough time with the players for them to understand the playing shape and how I wanted the game plans to be executed. We looked at the draw for the tournament and planned how this could work in our favour. 3. Matches • SA – 2-1. Good game to get first up. Strong opponent. Goals to Jodie Kenny and Madonna Blyth • NT – 9-0. Excellent performance against a weaker opponent. Timing of this match was ideal to be able to review the new playing style from the SA match and have some freedom to make the necessary corrections. It also enabled

the strikers to further understand my strategies on their positioning. Goals – Murphy Allendorf – 3, Jodie Kenny – 2, Jill Dwyer, Savannah Fitzpatrick, Madison Fitzpatrick, Renee Taylor - 1 • Vic – 0-2. In hindsight, this result contributed to our success more than any other. Although we dominated the match statistically, playing a better opponent highlighted the areas that we needed to be better in if we were going to contend for the title. • ACT – 6-2. More good fortune with the draw. Playing ACT allowed for us to apply the adjustments needed from the VIC match. Needing a better goal difference to assist with our progression, it was pleasing to get an elevated performance and increased goal difference. Goal Scorers – Murphy Allendorf, Savannah Fitzpatrick – 2, Madison Fitzpatrick, Stephanie Kershaw, 1 • NSW 2-1. Needing to win to go through against 2nd best team at the tournament produced our best performance. Now possessing a much better understanding of the playing style, the Scorchers were able to wear down their opponent and get the decisive winning goal in the 2nd last minute. Goals – Jodie Kenny, Jill Dwyer • Championship Match v VIC. 2-1. Knowing that it is very difficult to beat the

same team twice in the one tournament, we were looking forward to playing Vic in the final. Playing the structure better and having a better understanding of Victoria’s strengths allowed us to dominate the match but not on the scoreboard. 18 goal shots to 1 for the match is a good indication of this. Jodie Kenny was outstanding in the final and was extremely unlucky not to be player of the match. Goals – Jodie Kenny, Madonna Blyth. 4. Review • Statistically the Scorchers were clearly the dominant team at the championships. Some of these stats include o 40% more goal shots than nearest opponent o 55% fewer defensive circle penetrations o 60% less turnovers in defensive half o 60% more positive dispossessions of opponents in attacking half o WON the Championships • Team had great balance between penalty corner goals and field goals, thus not having to rely on one facet of our game to get goals. • Jodie Kenny unlucky not to be named Player of the Tournament and Player of the Final • Depth of the squad needs to be monitored with the possible large number of retirements after the RIO Olympics.
