International Encounters at historic sites of National Socialism

3rd – 5th MARCH 2016

Förderung durch den Bayerischen Jugendring im Rahmen der Bayerisch-Israelischen Bildungskooperation

Memorials of and Documentation Centers on the National Socialists era are places of commemoration of the past and reflection on the present. They open up spaces for scientific research, museological documentation and encounters of people who come here for various reasons. Visitors of the resident museums convene here as do historians, pedagogues and members of other professions, who look for a specialist exchange of ideas. Thus, the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial is a platform on which people from different

nations meet. And it is an institution which wants to support an exchange actively, especially the exchange between young people within a transnational framework. The intention to initiate programmes of international encounter is connected with specific questions: What objectives are pursued by these projects? Are we able to name aspects of NS History which are more suitable for these formats than others? How could the programme be adjusted with respect to bi-, tri- or multinationally constituted groups of different ages? What methodical approaches should be favoured for the work with participants from different nations? Concerning these questions, the year 2015 was in certain regards a pilot phase for the international place of learning Flossenbürg. In the context of several projects, trusted and new approaches and methods respectively were developed (further) and tested: Workshop Week: “Creating forms. Experiencing history and building Memories” In July 2015, adolescents and young adults were invited to discover the historic site together. During five days the participants approached history and had the opportunity to seek an exchange of personal perspectives. Two artistic and creative workshops were at the focal point  a workshop “Dance” and a workshop “Photography”. In this way the cognitive appraisal of the topic was joined by an emotional approach to the site, biographies and historic events. International Fan-Exchange Adolescent football fans from the Czech town of Liberec and the German town of Augsburg participated in this three-day project in September 2015. Thus, a particular peer group, which is connected by its common interest in football and is often confronted with right-wing extremist or

neo-Nazi movements in their scenes, met in Flossenbürg. Together with the Fanprojekt Augsburg the Memorial developed a programme for this format, which contains both the engagement in the history of the concentration camp and its aftermath as well as the opportunity for an exchange of views on activities within the scene.

International Youth Meeting Like in other historic sites, multinational youth meetings have a long tradition at the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial. Such a youth meeting also took place in 2015 in parallel to the annual Survivors Meeting. Under the specific conditions of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp on 23rd April adolescents from seven nations met former prisoners. The core issues of their one week stay were to learn about the historic site and the transnational encounter in the course of common leisure activities. At the end of a pilot phase there must be an appraisal of the conducted projects. We would like to undertake this concluding overall evaluation together with participants of the programmes and other experts from Germany and abroad. The conference, however, widens perspectives beyond the projects. It provides space for different protagonists to present other concepts and wants to encourage all participants to a forward-

looking reflection of trusted and new approaches to historic-political education.
