“ ”

I left my role with a large firm in York to pursue a pathway that allowed me to combine my love of plants and conservation with my business skills. I embarked on a Foundation Degree in Landscape and Garden Management at Askham Bryan College. The course allowed for comprehensive hands on experience in various placements giving me vital insight into different operations. Looking ahead of completing my studies, I decided to investigate the more project management, project officer and coordinator roles related to charities, public and conservation bodies, and widened my search to locations that I could potentially commute to, even if this meant lodging away. I came across a Business Analyst role with Kew Gardens and was fortunate to be offered the post. Right from the outset it seemed ideal as it combined business analysis, with my plant knowledge gained on the degree. The role encompasses working with a team implementing a new collections database located at the Kew herbarium. The location is truly astonishing, containing Charles Darwin’s and David Livingstone's collections with approximately seven million specimens on site in total.

Askham Bryan was recommended to me as the place to study as it would stand me in good stead for the future. I sought the opinion of ex-students that had attended the College and they gave excellent feedback regarding their experience and indicated that I would thoroughly enjoy it. My specialist knowledge surrounding agriculture has increased, which is something I probably wouldn’t gain just from working in the field. The science behind crops and livestock is intriguing. To underpin my studies, I also attend a work experience placement on a beef farm. I have not had much previous experience with cattle, but it is something I am very interested in pursuing in the future and having the industry experience has helped me to practise what I have been taught on my course. In the future I would like to look more into the research aspects involving livestock and crop trials as the science elements of agriculture really interest me.

Dr Andrew Henworth, Course Manager Agriculture

Although I was involved in farming from an early age, our biology teacher at school made us realise how much more there was to farming and how important it was to understand the science behind it. I decided then that agriculture was definitely the way I would go and eventually went on to complete a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science. Upon graduating I was employed in the livestock feed industry before getting involved in Voluntary Service Overseas, working in a farmers’ training centre in Kenya, Africa. On my return to England, I lectured in Devon and then Yorkshire while studying for a part time Master’s degree at the same time. I then did a two year contract with the Falkland Islands Department of Agriculture, doing advisory work with farmers. When I came back to Yorkshire I returned to teaching and undertook a PhD. The courses we offer provide the sort of education and training needed by today’s graduates. Certainly they seem to be achieving the right balance of applied and academic study with vocational training, which allows students to find good jobs in the industry after completing a Foundation or Bachelor degree, or go on to higher study at other institutions.

I entered the course direct from A-levels having studied a mixture of subjects including Biology, Performing Arts and PE. The decision to undertake an Animal Management Degree stemmed from wanting to do something that I would enjoy and lead on towards a career that would give me great satisfaction. The course was well designed to allow students with no previous animal management background to accelerate their practical knowledge through some brilliant animal handling and husbandry skills across a range of different species supported by further exposure through a work experience placement. This course raised my interest in studying diseases and the pharmaceutical industry and consequently has opened the door to gaining a placement working in a research laboratory in a large organisation. My experience as a student based in York is that it is so pleasant and has everything a student could want: fantastic nightlife and excellent shopping and you feel safe and content around the City.

Askham Bryan has recently opened the new state-of-the-art Animal Management Wildlife and Conservation Centre at York, which will greatly enhance our ‘outstanding’ department. In addition to current animal stock the new Centre boasts a new kennel, cattery, grooming and companion wing, complete with modern training facilities.

Set in a wildlife and conservation themed environment are a range of enclosures housing lemurs, exotics, birds, mammals, falconry and hoof stock. Inside the main Centre you can walk through an evolutionary trail exhibiting a variety of species across a range of habitats.

The Centre provides the students with the opportunity to develop their potential in a commercial setting, to achieve their chosen goals in the industry, or towards a 'top up' programme or postgraduate study.

childhood interest in animals eventually led me “to Astudy for a degree in zoology at the University of Glasgow. During my degree I benefitted from a placement at a large zoological collection, which gave me experience of exotic species and allowed me to appreciate the value of work experience as part of a degree. After my degree, positions at British wildlife charities exposed me to valuable conservation projects for species ranging from wood warblers to dormice and freshwater mussels.

I had found these research projects exciting and therefore decided to return to studying to complete a PhD at the University of York. I enjoyed the challenge of applying a new biochemical technique to analyse the chemicals found within caterpillars and their food plants. Lecturing at Askham Bryan has given me the opportunity to share my zoological knowledge, teach research skills, take the fear out of using statistics, while also helping undergraduates explore their future career options.

I have progressed through the levels at Askham Bryan from the initial interest to working outdoors and completing the vocational practical courses from 16 through to the opportunity to gain an Honours Degree. Over the time I have developed a keen interest in environmental science and ecological conservation. I have had the opportunity to be involved in many projects mainly through volunteering with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and I am proud to have worked closely on the Tansy Ark Beetle Conservation Project based at the College. I have gained substantial and essential knowledge in modern day conservation and environmental principles, backed up by business skills, as well as social interaction. My dedication to learning has advanced through the high level of tuition and the good relationships with the course managers and lecturers involved in my studies.

a keen interest in biology and ecology “as Iadeveloped child. I was particularly inspired by the volunteer work I did for the Kent Trust for Nature Conservation, alongside watching the documentaries by David Attenborough. I completed a BSc (Hons) in Biology at the University of York and, after working in Africa for a year, continued on to do a PhD in coral reef fish ecology at James Cook University in Australia. During my research I became fascinated with the population dynamics of species that we harvest and the importance of sustainable resource management. This also lead me to gain a diving qualification so that I could enjoy the natural wonders underwater. Countryside and agriculture are science-based disciplines. These industries are being heavily driven by scientific discovery and principles, making it an exciting area in which to be involved. The combined vocational and scientific aspects of our courses give students a fantastic insight and a competitive advantage when looking at potential careers.

I love the science and research. I think it’s brilliant to be able to learn about horses in depth. The investigation and analysis techniques I have developed have allowed me to further my knowledge around the equine industry as well as improve my personal effectiveness. The areas I particularly enjoy are nutrition, equine behaviour and recent advances in the equine industry. One of the highlights was the opportunity to get fully involved in the running of the British Eventing Horse Trials hosted at the College. Experiencing first-hand the running of the event and playing a role throughout whilst stewarding the dressage area was a really enjoyable experience. The course is challenging, but it is bursting with equine management content and I have brilliant tutors who are knowledgeable and approachable – I have definitely made the right choice!

After the realisation that I didn’t want to sit in an office all day for the rest of my working life, I decided that a career working in the outdoors and particularly getting involved with arboriculture really appealed to me. I didn’t really push myself at school, but since starting at Askham Bryan it has allowed me to better myself and it helps to be doing something that you’re really interested in. It’s a challenge holding down a full-time job while also studying as the course is demanding. The course has a work placement element attached, therefore it allows me the opportunity to go into the industry and gain the practical skills required to help open up a career in the future. Foundation Degree Veterinary Nursing

“ ”

Being a student in the City of York is brilliant. A lovely setting, loads of culture and the mix of students across the City makes a night out lively and a great laugh – ideal for shopping as well. My studies involve both working in a practice and the academic study. I never thought I would be confident or knowledgeable enough to run nurse clinics, but that’s what I’m doing! The real-life experience of dealing with clients, sometimes in very sensitive situations, has boosted my experience and confidence and will be key factors in what employers are looking for. The academic side of the degree covers aspects such as anatomy, physiology, parasitology, species of animals and laboratory techniques. These all provide a good footing to go alongside the application of skills required in a veterinary practice. Through my veterinary training practice I have secured full time employment, however my overall ambition is to run my own equestrian related or agriculture operation.
