EEPING IT IN THE FAMILY has truly paid off for Herrco Cosmetics, which is set to quadruple its production capacity this year. Founded 25 years ago, the company is owned and managed by the Herrmann Family, who are set to increase their profit growth by 60 percent this year. The company, which designs and produces products for the cosmetics industry has taken off in the last few years since Derek Herrmann, son of the company’s founder, got involved with the managerial side. “In the last six years we’ve gone from a production rate of half a million to eight million so we’ve experienced this phenomenal growth. The best thing about my mother and father (Sue & Nigel Herrmann) is that they will always invest if they see an opportunity, so we’ve invested millions over the last few years on plant and machinery,” explained Derek Herrmann, who is currently Technical Director at Herrco. Based in the UK, the Herrco specialise in New Product Development for major cosmetics companies, making the ideas of companies a reality by designing, developing and then manufacturing a product. This year, Herrco is increasing its production capacity by 400 percent, following an investment of £600,000 and has future plans for an increase in production vessels.

Focussing on R&D

“We’ve just bought just over an acre opposite our current site which means we have about 1.6 acres because we have another bit of land to the side of us already to develop onto. Amongst other investments, we plan to build another factory,” says Herrmann. The company had modest roots, beginning due to the whim of Derek’s father, Nigel Herrmann, who had always wanted to manufacture plastic bottles. “He sold his other businesses and went into manufacturing bottles for the personal care sector,”

remembers Derek. “He got lots of enquiries about filling bottles- so he took on a chemist and started manufacturing the bulk liquids to go inside the bottles. Both sides really took off, but he saw more opportunities in the cosmetic side so around 18-19 years ago he closed the bottle manufacturing side down and Herrco Cosmetics was born.” Having studied Sports Science at University, Derek did not plan to join the company initially, but later found he had ‘flair’ for cosmetic development. After completing a degree in Cosmetic Chemistry, he joined the company six years ago, and it has grown at an astonishing rate ever since. In addition to increased production, Herrmann also plans for an ambitious research and development facility, which would include a working spa to demonstrate products to the designer. “We want to develop a product as quickly as possible with a client. We will have an area where packaging supply partners can exhibit their different options,

have an experience centre where celebrity hairdressers can come in and use the products for cut and blow dry in our laboratory plus have an in-house spa where our spa brands can come and develop the products we’ve designed for them, then we can make the changes live with the chemist there, creating a finished product as quickly as possible for them,” Herrmann explains. Although unable to divulge information on clientele, Herrmann hints that Herrco are involved in an exclusive US contract at the moment, developing

its biggest range yet of 100 organic products which will be launching soon. The company specialise in Organic and Natural produce, and aims to make its organic range as good – if not better – than the ranges which use manmade produce. “When you develop something to an organic standard - whether it be Ecocert, Soil Association or NSF, there are just more limitations and that’s really what sets Herrco apart. On the natural and organic side no-one

can really touch us on product performance. Where a lot of chemists will claim that going for natural means sacrificing performance, we say that’s a load of rubbish. We can create a natural organic product that performs just as well as synthetic and that wins us an awful lot of business.” Herrco focuses on sustainability across all of its product lines, making sure that Palm oil, which is the main component in 90 percent of cosmetic base ingredients, is purchased via sources that support the sustainable production of Palm oil. “Most palm oil comes from unsustainable sources which mean that the rainforests are being Focussing on sustainability cut down and wildlife

such as orang-utans are losing their habitat, contributing to their extinction, plus indigenous people are being forced to move from their home. We pay an extra premium to Green Palm Sustainability for our palm oil, and that’s one way of giving back. All of our cardboard and waste product is recycled, too.” A relatively small company for its output, Herrco has a working staff body of around 70 members, which includes Derek’s mother and father. The family hope that their staff numbers will remain modest following

the expansion, as they are focused on making their name by offering a unique service, promoting good manufacturing as opposed to global manufacturing. “I don’t want to be considered in the industry as a contract filler- that’s not what we are. We’re a research and development facility, and we back it up with good, professional manufacture. In five years time I want to have a bigger business with a research, development and innovation facility built and then offer even more services on the new product development side,” explains Herrmann. According to Herrmann and his family, Derek Herrmann Herrco has no desire to become a global conglomerate, focusing on quality rather than quantity. “I want to make sure that what Herrco does is considered to be the best in the industry so if someone wants to come for a really premium skincare line, with clinical results and made to the same specification batch after batch then they come to Herrco Cosmetics
