WELCOME Families will be happy this month with Home, Big Hero 6, Shaun, Paddington and Cinderella, the latter directed by Kenneth Branagh and set to bust all box office records. These are all proving just as popular with grown-ups as with children!

Our biggest films this month are likely to be Woman in Gold with the incomparable Helen Mirren, (the true story of how octogenarian Maria Altmann reclaimed her family treasures, including the famous painting by Klimt, stolen by the Nazis) and A Little Chaos with Kate Winslett and Alan Rickman frolicking in the gardens of Versaille, a visual treat, full of wit and fine acting.

DIRECTED BY KENNETH BRANAGH

Don’t miss the official launch of our Big Breakfast on Tuesday 14th at 10 a.m. with a delicious “all you can eat” buffet including bacon butties sausages, scrambled eggs, and a full spread and bottomless tea and coffee throughout the show . What great value at £14 (£11.50 concessions) including ticket to The Imitation Game.

A LITTLE CHAOS

Many of you asked for Suite Francaise with (now Dame) Kristin Scott Thomas and Still Alice, for which Julianne

Moore rightly won an Oscar, so both are now showing, along with more Marigolds. We’re beaming in Elaine Paige from the Royal Albert Hall on 14th April, Julius Caesar from the Globe on 30th and Van Gogh on 23rd.

The new Avengers film with Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and the usual suspects is showing at the Regal in the first week of May.

THE AVENGERS ARE BACK LIVE FROM ROYAL ALBERT HALL

We are thrilled to be welcoming Gordon Banks in person on Sunday 26th to talk all things football, so come and be entertained and join in the football chat and a few beers before, during and after.

LIVE @ THE REGAL

And finally, we have the wonderful film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic Far From the Madding Crowd, a sure-fire crowd pleaser here at the Regal. We look forward to seeing you soon We are looking for more volunteer ushers to help with busy shows in return for free tickets, if you have a few hours to spare, please email [email protected].

from FRI 05 MAY

Thomas Hardy’s tale of the independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance. Lose yourself in this fine interpretation of one of English literature’s finest works.

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF A GUSTAV KLIMT PAINTING WOMAN IN GOLD

HELEN MIRREN, RYAN REYNOLDS, CHARLES DANCE, KATIE HOLMES

(TBC) 120 mins

from FRI 17 APR

Helen Mirren plays an octogenarian Jewish refugee, who takes on the government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family. In 2006, 89-year-old Maria Altmann won her case against the Austrian government for the restitution of five paintings by Gustav Klimt, looted from her family by the Nazis and until then displayed in the Austrian State Gallery in Vienna. The pictures included the famous portrait of her aunt Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Woman in Gold. Regarded as Austria’s equivalent of the Mona Lisa, it sold at auction in New York to cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder for $135 million. It’s a heartwarming story of belated justice, soppy enough in its pre-war flashbacks, but strong in its morality and sympathy: no ambiguities here.

STILL ALICE

JULIANNE MOORE, ALEC BALDWIN, KATE BOSWORTH

(12A) 101 mins

from FRI 14 APR

“JULIANNE MOORE SHINES” GUARDIAN

Julianne Moore gives one of her greatest performances playing a professor with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The most moving scene in the gorgeous, piercing Still Alice is between Julianne Moore and herself. The heroine of Lisa Genova’s 2007 novel is a linguistics professor, Dr Alice Howland, who must master what the poet Elizabeth Bishop called “the art of losing”. Alice, who has reached the point of forgetting her children’s names and how to spell “October”, finds a video file on her laptop. She’s not meant to be watching it, or not yet: it’s supposed to be the last message she’ll ever see, when her mind has already deteriorated to a point past endurance. The person on the video is her earlier self – an Alice soon after diagnosis, in the controlled infancy of her illness. It’s perhaps the centrepiece moment of an astonishingly delicate and sad performance.

SUITE FRANCAISE

MICHELLE WILLIAMS , KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS, MARGOT ROBBIE, SAM RILEY

(15) 107 mins

from FRI 17 APR

This handsome adaptation of Irène Némirovsky’s epic novel vividly depicts French rural life under the Nazis. The bucolic yet class-riven life of the small town of Bussy is turned upside down by the arrival of refugees from Paris and jackbooted soldiers from Berlin. Horrified at being billeted an officer from the invading army, haughty Madame Angellier (a fearsomely taut Kristin Scott Thomas) and her winsomely hectored daughter-in-law Lucile (Michelle Williams) become the subject of a vicious whispering campaign by the villagers from whom they have extorted high rents for years. In stark contrast to such native hostility, handsome German officer Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts) proves a disturbingly charming house guest.

A LITTLE CHAOS

KATE WINSLET, MATTHIAS SCHOENAERTS, ALAN RICKMAN DIRECTED BY ALAN RICKMAN

(TBC) 116 mins

from FRI 24 APR

Kate Winslet blooms in a film full of heaving bosoms, flouncing dandies and landscape gardening. If you see only one film about 17th century French landscape gardening this year, it probably ought to be A Little Chaos, a heaving bouquet of a picture which just premiered at the Toronto film festival. Kate Winslet stars as a fictional character in 1682 called Sabine de Barra, hired by the landscape architect André le Nôtre. Alan Rickman as well as directing, also co-stars as a very droll Louis XIV, who likes to take a turn through the palace grounds and throw off his wig after a long morning’s kinging. A LITTLE CHAOS follows Sabine, as she challenges sexual and class barriers when she is chosen to build one of the main gardens at King Louis XIV’s new palace at Versailles, causing her to become professionally and romantically entangled to huge dramatic and visual effect!

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: Insurgent picks up where its predecessor left off, with Tris (Shailene

Woodley) and Four (Theo James) on the run from the ruling Erudite faction after the uprising. Desperately trying to find out what the Abnegation faction sacrificed their lives to protect, and being hunted by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), the Erudite leader, they must search for answers and learn the truth about their world. Based on the best-selling novels by Veronica Roth, ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’ continues the dark, dystopian story begun in the smash hit original.

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

JUDI DENCH, MAGGIE SMITH, BILL NIGHY, RICHARD GERE, DEV PATEL

(PG) 122 mins

from FRI 27 MAR

The Shakespeare in Love director’s follow up, titled The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, sees ambitious hotel owner-manager Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) embark on a brand new venture for a second business. New arrival Guy (Richard Gere), joins Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith all back for the new instalment. The first Best Exotic Marigold Hotel took £81m worldwide two years ago against a budget of just $10m, a hugely impressive take for an indie comedy. Its success was hailed by some as evidence of a gap in the market for films targeting an older demographic. The original introduced audiences to a group of British pensioners living in the eponymous retirement home in India owned by Dev Patel’s Sonny; this next instalment sees the hotel’s balance disrupted by the arrival of new American resident Guy (Gere), and it isn’t long until the core female residents begin lusting over their new arrival - most notably returnee Celia Imrie (“Have mercy on my ovaries,” she quips upon spotting Guy for the first time).

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, CHARLES DANCE

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logican, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. Turing went to assist with the development of computers at Manchester University after the war, but was prosecuted by the UK government for homosexual acts.

THE WATER DIVINER

DIRECTED BY AND STARRING RUSSELL CROWE

(15) 111 mins from MON 11 MAY Russell Crowe is ‘The Water Diviner’, a farmer with a talent for finding water in arid landscapes. After the Great War, he travels to Gallipoli to find his missing sons. Believed to have been killed in the battle there, Connor (Crowe) simply wants to bring their bodies home for burial. But soon it becomes apparent that they may be alive - and that the Turkish military would prefer them not to be found. ‘The Water Diviner’ is Russell Crowe’s (‘Gladiator’, ‘Noah’) directorial debut, and also stars Olga Kurylenko (‘Oblivion’) and Jai Courtney (‘A Good Day To Die Hard’).

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING EDDIE REDMAYNE FELICITY JONES

(12A) 123 mins

from TUE 07 APR

“EDDIE REDMAYNE & FELICITY JONES ARE EXTRAORDINARY”

VANITY FAIR The Regal is under invasion from a British scientist. Specifically, an Oxbridge-educated scientist from the middle of the last century who made monumental breakthroughs despite enormous personal obstacles. We first see Hawking as a grinning postgraduate in early 1960’s Cambridge, whizzing on his boneshaker over the cobbles with a pal to a party. It’s here he meets Jane (Felicity Jones), a foreign languages undergrad who shares his intellectual curiosity (and, as it happens, his movie star pout). Then, aged 21, after a fall, comes Hawking’s terrible diagnosis: motor neurone disease, meaning his muscles will progressively waste and he most likely has only a couple of years to live. Hawking asks if his brain will still function. Oh yes, replies the doctor except no one will know what you’re thinking. His physical decline runs in parallel to Hawking’s personal and professional successes: bestsellers and academic acclaim. It’s a film to leave you reeling but cheered, too. It’s about battling love, as well as illness. A universal story, extracted from a unique one.

50 SHADES OF GREY

JAMIE DORNAN, DAKOTA JOHNSON

(18) 117 mins

from FRI 03 APR

Fifty Shades of Grey is the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the bestselling book that has become a global phenomenon. Since its release, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has been translated into 51 languages worldwide and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print—making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever. Stepping into the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, who have become iconic to millions of readers, are Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.
